Charlton’s Coffeehouse - Brewing The Revolution - Colonial Williamsburg - Explore, Tour & History

Charlton’s Coffeehouse in Colonial Williamsburg is yet another fascinating landmark that visitors will most certainly come across during a walk down the Duke of Gloucester Street.
In the mid-18th century, and once again standing today, this coffeehouse in Williamsburg is conveniently located where it stood over two centuries ago… Right near the doorstep of the easily spotted Capitol building that’s towering amongst the city’s eastern skyline.
During the beauty of a recent springtime exploration in Colonial Williamsburg, our memory banks fluttered and had us thinking about one of our favorite times of the year to be in town. A time when warm caffeinated chronicles are best shared when the leaves are falling, cooler air begins to blow in, and a steaming, hot cup of coffee is most certainly always close at hand.
Equally, the perfect combination and environment to learn more about Williamsburg’s most historic coffeehouse. A local gathering spot in the mid-1760s, frequented by ordinary people, as well as elite patrons of the city, including city officials, burgesses, and even the Governor himself.
Charlton’s Coffeehouse was a place where stimulating conversation between guests looking to talk business, news of the day, or even Revolution, was carefully undertaken while sipping their favorite hot beverage. Including hot coffee, hot chocolate, or tea.
In the latest Quest Capsule story documentary, we explore the exterior of Charlton’s Coffeehouse in hopes of etching many vivid scenes and happenings from its long history into our imaginations. We intently witness a powerful Revolutionary speech by Congressman James Madison, portrayed in 1782, who appeared on the Charlton Stage at the backlot of the coffee shop. We then took a guided tour of the interior of Charlton’s Coffeehouse which gave us an interesting first-hand account of each room available to the public for viewing. And finally, we head down to Charlton’s rustic cellar to sample some 18th-century-inspired coffeehouse beverage offerings.

I heard the guide say they offered stimulating drink for stimulating conversation. Made me smile remembering I tried to have a series of British dinners where we would watch together "Amazing Grace" the story of William Wilberforce and the end of the slave trade in Britain. I invited church people from the two churches where I played keyboards. Out of the four dinners, I had an average of 3 people. LOL At the last dinner, I made a comment about it and one older guy said, "Well, it may have been the line in your invitation about 'stimulating conversation.' I'm not sure we know what that means."

I believe the dinners would have most definitely spawned interesting discussion regarding Wilberforce. I would have attended and taken part in coffee driven “stimulating conversation”, the British fare, and maybe even to hear a tune or two on the keyboards🎩😉Thanks for sharing this funny memory Marcy!

In the basement the wall to the righy (when being served) is mostly original and the wall to the left was done by the tradesman within Williamsburg. They are very proud of the work they did at the coffeehouse. Just ask them, they will tell you. 😂
