The Story of a Patriot - Filming Locations “Then & Now” - Colonial Williamsburg (2023)

The Story of a Patriot is Colonial WIlliamsburg’s “orientation” film of sorts. Consistently shown in the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center since the 1950s.
The film, seen by millions over the years, was almost entirely filmed throughout Colonial Williamsburg with many of the historic buildings and visuals new visitors will see on a trip here appearing within the movie.
A roughly 36-minute motion picture centered around a newly elected Virginia burgess weighing the pros and cons related to the country’s bold quest for independence. This short piece of cinema history unveils Williamsburg as it would have appeared at the cusp of the Revolution.
A film complete with a whole host of well-known American Founding Fathers appearing within the 18th-century Capitol of the Colony of Virginia.
A must-see for anyone planning a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, or a most definite, regularly repeated viewing occasion for locals or those who hold the area and its history in high regard.
With so many places around the city that Hollywood planted its tripod to compose the vivid imagery seen within the film….we set out to locate just some of the filming locations where director George Seaton, best known for directing the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street, would have yelled, “Action”, through his handy megaphone.
Join us for another interesting exploration around Colonial Williamsburg, to discover filming locations from the popular feature presentation, Williamsburg The Story of a Patriot.

Our first dozen or so times visiting CW, seeing A Story of A Patriot was a must. Walking around CW and seeing the places the movie was made. It made you feel as if you had transferred back in time and you were part of the scene. I always enjoyed the movie and periodically I will watch it again. Once you arrive in CW you will always want to come back and be part of the feeling of our history. Not only is CW a place but it’s also a feeling that this really did happen and it happened here. Long Live Colonial Williamsburg!!

Great job! That was fun. I went to W&M in 1972 and graduated in '76. I worked at and then starting teaching tennis at the Williamsburg Inn during my time there. Wonderful memories. I return to Wmsbg. every several years. Feels like I must have been there during the Revolution. I watch the Story of a Patriot several times a year. Assume you've been to Westover. Thanks for doing the video.

❤❤❤❤ I am sending you and Sarah love and sparkles from New York City! I really loved this video. I think I told you that I graduated from William And Mary and did a lot of plays in the William And Mary Theatre. and Mary theater - - three of them with Glenn Close, who was my friend. Our favorite professor was Howard Scammon. There is a close-up on him drunk and passed.out in the Raleigh Tavern scene. Yes, Howard loved to party! I loved that last voiceover by John Fry--gave me goosebumps! I hope you and your wife are having a glorious day! ❤❤❤

Fantastic video Scott. I didnt realize they started showing this orientation movie at the visitor center again. Its a welcome return indeed. I loved how you did the then and now, the fading from movie to real life views were great, the attention to detail is amazing and not an easy thing to research I'm sure. AND WOW! You just added another "to-do list item" for us, we need to visit the Tuckhoe home! I haven't been there and it certainly deserves some more investigation. Thanks for all your and Sarah's efforts and especially your talents.

I really enjoyed this. I used to be an usher for Colonial Williamsburg, and I've seen the film who knows how many times. After they did the film restoration a few years, they were able to get rid of a few of bloopers in the film, such as the taking out the water skier on the river while Fry and friends were enjoying the afternoon at Westover, and removing the CW bus at the end of the Duke of Gloucester Street. However, they did leave in the scene where Fry gets off his horse twice in front of the Raleigh Tavern.

Love your your videos with all the extra detail you add. I believe they threw the crate through the William Pitt Store (formerly Davidson Shop) corner of Botetourt and Duke of Gloucester Street. As you mentioned. I imagine the window was rotting so they allowed it.

Didn't know they did a movie in Williamsburg, going to see it sometime in the next week when relatives come from CA for a visit, just moved here to Williamsburg last December and the history is one of the reasons I wanted moved here. So glad to have discovered your videos as its getting excited all over again as the reason I moved here, but been so busy I forgot about it! Also really really liked your George Washington, places he visited video and am going to try and find a copy of that diary and visit the places he visited, just like you did in your video! Excellent Scott and maybe you could talk to the folks at William and Mary and see if they'd be interested in making another movie or series depicting George Washington's visits and activities and with your knowledge and obvious interest, maybe you could direct or advise. And a relative of mine, does suggest shows and ect for the Discovery channel, so maybe Discovery would also be interested in working with W&M on some kind of series!

I was a student at William and Mary when the Perry Como Christmas special was filmed. A few select students from the W&M Choir were featured in some music scenes - including a guy who hammed it up mightily. He could be a bit of an attention seeker in real life, too. Have fun figuring out which guy I mean!
