@@jabber1990 nah, if anything Washington would've had something more skin to an English accent. He was born in 1732, when the colonies were still firmly British, and he'd served in the British army. His family had come over less than a hundred years earlier from NE England. An accent that we'd recognize as a distinctly American southern accent wouldn't have evolved yet, even by the Civil War decades later, they wouldn't have sounded like what you hear in NC or GA or AL now . If you want to get a good idea for how Washington and American colonists at the time would've sounded, watch the show TURN about Washington's spies, or the HBO miniseries John Adams. You can hear the beginnings of Boston and NY and Southern accents, but all still heavily influenced by British and Irish accents.

@@markk8588 William Ellison was a prosperous black slave owner who was known to be particularly evil. There were quite a few prosperous black slave owners as well as most native American tribes that had slaves. Guess what they supported and fought for the south in the civil war. I think we need to get rid of Christianity and Islam. The Bible condones slavery and the prophet Muhammad owned and sold slaves. BTW Mark if you were a plantation owner back in those times YOU would have been a slave owner even if you were black. Oh and there was a man named Anthony Johnson he was the first legal slave owner in the colonies. A black man and a former slave at that. You know Mark Africans were selling and enslaving their own long before the Transatlantic slave trade. And when slavery ended in the US they still continued to sell their own throughout the Caribbean and South America...leaving them in cages along the shore to be picked up..oh and the majority of slaves at MT Vernon were not George Washington's nor Martha's. They were the slaves from Martha's first husband. She was in charge of his estate. Neither she nor George had a legal right to free them under 18th century law.

Nobody seemed to know so I never received an answer...

Oh i loved that place, i used to ride by bike from DC to there when i was young now i am 82 and my memories of going there stay with me. The gentleman is very interesting to listen to. My middle name is Lawrence, named after my uncle who was killed by a car when he was 5 years old.

I grew up in Arlington VA. DC was my playground. Ice skated on the reflecting pool, climbed the stairs to the Washington monument, shinnied up to ride behind Andrew Jackson on his statue across from the White House. I went to all the museums and galleries on the National Mall and sat in the Senate gallery. You could do all these things as a boy in the 1950s. I would always stand for a long time in front of a glass case in the Smithsonian. Inside it, on a maniquine, was George Washington's military dress uniform.

Beautifully done with a very nice portrayal of Mr. Washington. I love Mt. Vernon and hope to get back to see some of the changes one of these days. I have carefully followed the work of the association for years. Thank you all.
