Charleston, South Carolina Might Be The Best City In The South
Wow this might be the prettiest city in the nation!
Charleston is a very historic city. Founded in 1670 as a port city, it’s defined by cute cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, antebellum houses, and upscale shopping. It’s been voted America’s #1 small city for nine years in a row. You’ll see why.
In this video, we’ll take a drive along the waterfront battery district, drive through some beautiful historic neighborhoods, and then cruise down King Street, Charleston’s world famous retail and dining destination.
The Battery District is right along Charleston’s picturesque harbor. Back in the Civil War days, where these homes now stand there was a defensive seawall, where confederate armies fought off attacks from union navy ships. This was a very strategic port after all, allowing supplies to enter the south from the Atlantic Ocean. Off in the distance is the famous Fort Sumpter, which was originally controlled by the union. The confederate army took eventually Fort Sumpter away from Union control, and controlled it for most of the Civil War.
Now, these homes that line this first row along the south end of Charleston sell for anywhere between 2 and 5 million dollars.
Charleston’s population is only 136,000 people, making it the most populated city in the state. Columbia, the state capital, has about 129,000 people. Charleston is growing just about as fast as it can - because the city is located on a narrow peninsula, there isn’t much room for growth. That’s why it’s notoriously so expensive to buy a home here.
Now we’re going to take a tour of some historic homes which line the south end of Charleston.
We’ll drive through two neighborhoods on Charleston’s south end - the French Quarter and Harleston Village. These historic districts are considered the most romantic sections of Charleston. As you can see, there’s a large French influence in these homes, which cost about two million bucks. Many were built in the late 1700s, but a lot of these homes have been rebuilt as late as the 1980s. Mixed in with historic homes are churches, art galleries, museums and restaurants.
Chalmers Street is the oldest cobblestone street in the city. Nearby is Waterfront Park on Charleston’s eastern shoreline.
As the brochures say, nothing quite defines southern charm like King Street. This avenue is more than 300 years old, and was named for King Charles II of England. In fact, the city of Charlestown was originally called Charles Town. Now back during the Civil War, this street, along with much of Charleston, was devastated. But then during the 1950s, the whole city of Charleston went through an urban revitalization. Important areas of the city like King Street were completely renovated.
King Street has some of Charleston’s trendiest restaurants and sophisticated cocktail scenes, as well as hotels, art galleries, high-end shopping and a lively nightlife. Not too long ago, King Street was given the distinction as one of the top 10 shopping streets in the United States.

What a BEAUTIFUL city. It feels like a mix of Europe and the old South... I've got to visit this place soon!
I spent most of my life in the Charleston suburbs. Summerville, and North Charleston to be exact. I was born in N. Charleston my parents are from Ohio. My dad joined the Navy, and his first assignment was here. We moved every couple of years, but always found ourselves back in Charleston. I love it here, but with decades of uncontrolled growth it is a nightmare to get anywhere around here. I wish people will stop moving here we are full, and that is no joke.

I experience the Google street-view shots and 3D cityscaping much the same way: even if I travel the actual paths myself, I recall the "virtual" travels with equal accuracy. SOOOO cool!!!
What a beautiful city Charleston is.

Yes summerville is so charming. On a much smaller scale than charleston but none the less "beautiful places, smiling faces" glad to have your smiling face here!
Everything about Charleston has gone down hill in the last 7-8 years . Quality of life, traffic, housing cost, cost of food, flooding, losing its charm due to the amount of people moving here combined the rate they’re showing up. Drinking water quality is very very poor. Harbor water quality is getting worse due to Constant sewage spill from an overwhelmed system. Enormous loss of trees and green space just to make room for over priced apartments and hotels. The list goes on and on.
lived here all my life on james island and too many folks are moving here.

I have family in Charleston so it's nice to see this side even if my family and I never get to live here. I know my ancestors roamed these streets and played a huge part of its existence today. As in most nicer areas my family do not take time to frequent these area as they feel unwelcome but each time I visit, I make sure to roam the area where my ancestors were brought, sold and worked. Thank you for a closer glimpse.
Thanks for the excellent video! Heading here in 3 weeks.
I think the complaints are he really didn't show Charleston. He showed the white picturesque part. I can trace my slave descendants back to johns island. I was born and raised in Charleston. This is not a true reflection of the city at all. He only showed what tourist want to see. I'd change the title to a tourist view or Charleston.

You know, people have a right to live where they want. I live in Charleston half the year for work, and I believe I add to the community rather than take from it. I volunteer, I take an interest in local issues, I don't hurt anyone and I spend my money locally. Being from Seattle, I totally understand why you don't want Charleston to grow too big too fast, but not every outsider is a bad person, and not every native Charlestonian is virtuous. I'm saying this with love, but get over yourselves.

I lived in charleston for 21 years, and still have family there. It’s a beautiful historic place! But to be fair, IT DOES HAVE GHETTOS ALSO, JUST LIKE MANY OTHER CITIES. North Charleston, Johns island, WEST ASHLEY , WHERE I LIVED , ALL HAVE GHETTOS. Downtown Charleston has slowly been gentrified, just like many other places in this country. And just like anywhere it has good and bad. Still a beautiful city though!!! Excellent video!!!

Wait, what about the peninsula itself? Ghettos? If you think that what is in Charleston, even the roughest parts of the tri county area aren’t THAT bad. Ghetto? Where are you from when you say something like that? Arizona? West Ashley? Ghetto? Good god man. The very worst parts of West Ashley are not like instant danger, as the real ghettos are in major cities. Get a grip. Your comment reeks of superficial observation. Sorry. Seriously. I apologize for the abrasive nature of my comment, but that pales in how offensive yours was. Bubble much?

I went to Charleston once on Christmas and couldn’t believe it got so cold there, ditto Savannah the next day. Stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn which I highly recommend. The Downtown area is a nice place to walk with drop dead gorgeous architecture and we actually found a great Thai restaurant that was open Christmas night. The National Park Service does its usual bang-up job at the visitor center connected to Fort Sumter. Even JFK would rendezvous with a pre-Jackie girlfriend (who was suspected of being a spy) at the Fort Sumter Hotel on King Street. Speaking of which, great name for a street. Right up there with King William, Virginia (where I stopped on the way back from Charleston/Savannah). Whew! A lot of driving in my (then) brand new BMW.
