the whole process in one take! just incredible, to show everything, touches, strokes, where you aggressively apply dark areas and where you gently leave shadows. love it, no fancy cuts and edits just raw tutorial, on point.

Hi. Loved watching this. Can I ask what paper you use? When I’ve tried to highlight by rubbing out nothing happens. I end up having to use white chalk. Many thanks

Hey Mark, If you use a smooth paper and soft charcoal, then it's easy to create highlights, if you use rough paper with hard charcoal then you need to use white chalk. In this video, I used printing paper (as a practice.

@@MaridK oh yes, very helpful. I see now, that I am too shy with the chalk. I need to free up, loosen up and be much more liberal with my strokes. I am a painter but do love to sketch.

@user-hx5gk2fj3h yes!! Same looseness helps with painting too, moving the wrist and the whole arm, more fluid and create more natural lines, better than "careful" !

لم افهم سؤالك بصراحة!
This reminds me of something: I was in an art class in 5th grade. The teacher gave us black construction paper and colored chalk; the only instruction was to "draw a flower". I used similar techniques to those seen here, probably from watching my mom work with pastels. I thought my picture looked pretty good and I was looking forward to showing it to my mother. The teacher walked around the classroom looking at our work. She picked up my picture and took it to the front of the class. I thought she was going to say something nice, but she held it up and said, " This is a perfect example of what not to do. D*** didn't follow directions. I didn't say to blend, or blur or anything like that. I said to draw a flower." What I wanted to say was that it was an art class, which implied exploration and expression, but I didn't have the vocabulary for that kind of self-advocating. She humiliated me, and I ripped up my picture and threw it in the trash. It was a long time until I found the courage or interest to try art again.

Unfortunately, art education has failed in some areas in representing the genuine curiosity and expression of art. I'm sorry you had that experience and wonder what your mom said !! I'm happy that your passion for art stayed with you. You should draw a Flower and call it "a portrait of a flower in the mind of a child" and hang it on your wall. You will smile when you see it!! Thank you for sharing your story with us!
