Charcoal Drawing | 'Forgotten Gate'

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was walking Basil recently and noticed this old broken gate at the edge of the field. I loved how nature had reclaimed the space that the gate occupied and offered us a glimpse into the landscape beyond.
I always try to search out these forgotten or less obvious views and landscapes.
I knew I had to draw it - so I did!
I hope you enjoy this charcoal drawing of the forgotten gate. I had a few technical issues from time to time with video and sound but I don't think they affect the quality too much. If you have any questions about the techniques or materials used please leave them in the 'Comments' section.
Bye for now - Andrew

I can’t count how many times I was told to never blend my charcoal with my fingers. My instructors were great but you are a true artist. What a lovely drawing!

My two cents on the topic has always been that it’s all good to blend w/fingers if it’s integrated into the process, and you’re not going for a highly refined finish. The issue is when you’re working on something like a cast drawing, it can create different levels of absorbency in the paper and cause darker patches in areas meant for an even tone. But for most circumstances isn’t a problem as long as you’re methodical about it.

I like seeing the different techniques and tricks you invent to make your tools perform at their best, so much so that in some parts they look like anything but charcoal. I’m very much impressed by the large range of medias you are able to practice (watercolor, oil sticks, pastel, charcoal, oil painting …). Your are a very talented artist. I must say one of the most talented I have ever seen so far on internet. Highly professional work, also full of creativity and sensibility. Not surprising to have been promoted by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Your KZread channel might be also a very usefull guide to guys like me trying to produce some masterpiece in their living room ! May I also tell you that I love your dog Basil (he seems to be the happiest dog of the world) and also (from this side of the channel) your so lovely british accent 😊. This one was exceptionally beautiful, Andrew! As always thank you for sharing your work... But I'm curious concerning all those light touches of charcoal. What is your process and the product to permanently fix it to the paper? Just a regular fixative? Brand? And how many coats?

Thank you so much Reese. Fixing the charcoal is a real dilemma. I usually give them 1 very light spray and then frame under glass. If they aren’t framed they get several light layers but if I overdo it they go too dark

I have a question; another Charcoal artist uses Acetone, and I'm wondering if the Acetone would compromise the Archival properties of the piece . . . do you know? I did like the actual marks left behind after it evaporated.

Hi Diana I'm not sure about acetone and the long term archival properties. I know and have seen other artists use it and I love the effects. It is always a risk using solvents - but sometimes worth trying

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thank you Andrew for giving me your take on the Acetone. Even more thanks because it's Christmas there in Cornwall.. I loved Cornwall. It was very magical I believe. Happy Christmas from Waldport to the Oregon Coast!
