How to Add Layers in Charcoal Drawing?
Compressed charcoal is way denser than vine charcoal, and gives richer darks and sharper contrast as a result. Using it on top of a layer of vine charcoal is a bit tricky though, which is what I demonstrate in this video.

The masterful understanding of light and contrast by the artist is nothing short of spectacular! This is a Master at work.
What we are seeing is the exemplary skill of an artist who knows his craft. Being an artist, I just sat and enjoyed the ride. P.s. the music from Desert Planet was amazing as well.
Absolutely Brilliant‼️👌♥️
Beautiful and mesmerizing! Excellent work…!
Thank you for sharing your process in this beautiful drawing ❤❤
As far as drawing is concerned it appears to me that charcoal will result in drawings with the most depth without having to overwork the areas where you want the most contrast, I need to try a charcoal drawing it takes a while to flatten solid black forms with lead. This drawing is excellent the light source focusing just behind her eye is very interesting, the piece would be completely different if the light was moved forward an inch or even half an inch. Great job!

Master of arts! But One question: how did you manage to brush it brighter (3:12) and darker( 3:02) by using the same "finger sweeping technique", but with contract result ??? It looks like magic.

Agregar algo mas significativo a lo dicho por los que presencian este trabajo, es imposible ,solo puedo decir ! Fabuloso ,, el dueño de las sombras y la luz"
This video has less to do with showing how to add layers than with just showing the evolution of the drawing.

Yeah. Thought he’d use fixative or something to do actual layers. Was just click bait for a simple drawing.
@ManWithoutThePants

@@AT-ol2yj First layer is done by vine charcoal and then he moves to compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil for darkening areas. That's what it seems to me. I have never seen people using fixative on charcoal drawing before it's finished. Do you have some example of that? I'd like to see how charcoal works when drawn over fixative.

@@AT-ol2yj This is multilayered. And far from ‘simple’. You are confusing fixative with skill. If you have the honest capacity for learning then I recommend you read the video description and then watch again, only more carefully.
How does he remove charcoal (lighten an area) by rubbing his finger?

Sticks to his finger.

It’s vine/willow charcoal - it’s very soft delicate charcoal and it doesn’t stick to the paper very well, it creates a layer of velvety dark dust that just sits lightly on the paper surface and it can be swept away or erased with rubber or kneadable erasers or tissues, fingers, brushes, etc. It’s super easy to manipulate and one of the fastest mediums to work with.
A real artist is noticeable from the first strokes.

@@EhsanMalekiArt Thanks. I’ve tried various smooth cotton rag for archival purposes but even the vine charcoal doesn’t lift as well as it looks like it does with newsprint. What would give similar results to newsprint that would be acid free and thus archival?

@@allanpennington Strathmore and Arches both produce archival paper for charcoal, the only catch is you feel precious and not experiment enough
@allanpennington

@@EhsanMalekiArt I agree, practice is good with newsprint. I had tried arches hot press 100% cotton water colour paper but even vine charcoal leaves a stain so you can’t lift a bright highlight. Mad Charcoal YT uses arches bfk rives a print cotton rag. I have a piece I’ll try out to see how well vine lifts. At the end of the day I’ll probably end up going darker across all values and the highlights won’t be original paper white but the lightest tone left behind by the vine charcoal.

@@allanpennington I see, This is an issue with most archival paper... thats why I opted out, now I work on grey newsprint and after the drawing is done in case I want to archive it, I will fix it with spray and then paste it on sturdy foamboards

Short answer: to add layers in charcoal, mist it lightly with fixative, wait a minute, keep drawing.
@cluek9780

Better answer: spray a mist of alcohol. It’ll allow more pigment to be placed without gluing down the previous layer

140K views for this yet one most others in the less than 100 to 1000 range? I don't get it?
Interesting video from a technical point of view but after 2::37 the drawing deteriorates to decorative realism. By the way you should have shown also the fixation...
