Chant with 10th-century notation

Музыка

Dominus Illuminatio Mea • It's hard to know exactly what a medieval chant sounded like. This embellished reconstruction of a 10th-century Gregorian chant opened our Guillaume de Machaut concert program last month. The music comes from a codex containing the oldest surviving complete neumed mass antiphonary.

And yet the sound of it is perfectly recognizable to anyone who has sung Gregorian chant.

Interesting. It bears a striking resemblance to modern Byzantine chant notation. I'm sure there's probably a common origin.
