In this episode I review the “Rocket Wide” which is the latest edition of small wave Grovelers in the CI line up of surfboards.
I ordered two stock 5’5” x 18 ¾ x 2 5/16 Liters 25.8 in the new CI Spine-Tek construction… one board with Futures Fin boxes and the other has FCSII. I test both of these boards in perfect 1-2’ and 3-4’ surf to find the range that best suits this model.
I found the Rocket Wide to be very fast, responsive, and most of all it has good flow in transition from turn to turn. I can honestly say that this board suits my style of surfing best in 1-3’ surf.
I highly recommend this board for small waves I think it suits all level of surfers.
The Rocket Wide is not only a favorite of Surf n’ Shows for 2018… it’s also my top pick for best Groveler for 2018 in 1-3’ surf.

    Noel you have really got me thinking about the fin setups on this board.late last year I bought a 5,8 in spinetek(30.3 litres) and I had originally borrowed the polyurethane 5,8 as a demo before I made the purchase.right away the spinetek felt faster and more responsive but had less bite and hold than the PU and at first I was thinking I should have got the 5,7 in spinetek but then I tried these 2 side fins that were on my longboard with the blue almerrickfin(large)(fcs1)in centre and think I've gotten back the hold I was after.(the 2 side fins were considerably larger than the standard largethruster fins but smaller than a twin.and now I'm thinking because this is such a loose board anyway,you have the 2+1 setup.if you could get a 3rd fin the same size as the twins it may really increase the drive and power off the turns.seems like a lot of fin in the water but I don't think many people have tried it.maybe in 2 ft plus surf.worth a try?

    The board is one of my favorite boards to surf. I get excited when the waves are small because of the Rocket Wide in the Spine Tex. The CI website says the board is good up to head high? I wonder why it got sticky for you so quickly. I’ve surfed this board up to head high and didn’t feel the sticking. I suppose I have a lot more rail line @ 5’ 11”. Out of all the boards that you have tested, which board feels similar to the Rocket Wide in bigger/ better waves?

  • @dynodin81

    What a great review! Decisions to make. I have a Puddle Fish in which I've had so much fun in but I'm starting to feel the board become to big for me. My surfing has improved I can feel the extra volume of the Puddle Fish get in the way in terms of its volume compared to my weight. The rocket wide and the Mod Pod are on my radar both looked great under your feet. The Mod Pod looked better in the bigger surf though. Keep up the awesome reviews, oh and those prototype fins looked great with lots of speed and drive.

    Just got one of these guys yesterday, I took it out the first day with the black sticks as a thruster in weak 2 to 3 foot surf. The fins and board kept wanting to jump out of the water which was great in weak mushy close outs. Today, I did the 2 plus one setup (kaipas with a nubster). The board was super fun and playful but when I took it out in punchy surf it was quick and responsive in the critical parts of the wave with the spine tek. My buddy let me borrow his in the PU, which I felt handled the top end of the wave spectrum (handling better than the spine tek in bigger surf). So all in all, a super fun summer board that seems to perform better in better surf with the single to double set up. Lastly, after all boards that I field test in the water I always ask myself the same question at the end My session “Do I have aspirations to surf this board in better surf”? You know what I’ve been meaning to ask you, wouldn’t it be sick to review carver Boards that feel like surf when the waves are subpar? Just a thought like things to better your surf when the waves suck

    Hey Noel, I’ve noticed you’ve said the squash tail RW has improved on the swallow tail model. How would you compare the Squash RW with the Neckbeard 2? Would the NB2 still be your go to board in regard to small wave performance?

  • @dkilla01
    @dkilla016 жыл бұрын

    You usually have different constructions on deck but I feel ya on the spine T it was amazing. I took this board out on mushy steep waves and it was super fast, especially on the lower end of the wave spectrum. I could feel the spring right away and the swing weight was on point, luckily the demo truck came to Clairemont Surf Shop in my dims so I had to jump on it!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for all the great videos. Volume question: I’m in good shape, experienced, and I surf 6 days a week on Oahu (North and South). I like extra foam because I’m 52 years old and 180 pounds. Also, of course, Hawaii has long paddles, strong trade winds, currents, skilled crowds, and tough waves to catch in general. In overhead waves I ride a CI “Happy” at 33L. Feels maybe a touch small, but it’s fun to push myself. My tiny wave groveler is 39L and works great. I plan to surf the Rocket Wide in small to average surf (when the waves are too good for a 39L groveler but not good enough for the Happy). Unfortunately, I have mediocre skills, especially when it comes to building speed and approaching the lip vertically. I’m not sure if the extra volume, or not enough volume for my skill set, is making that worse? I’m trying to choose between 34.5 liters and 37 liters. One is closer to the groveler and one is closer to the Happy. What does your intuition tell you about the correct size for me? Thanks!

    Hey Noel great show keep it up. My buddy just bought the Rocket Wide but in PU. Do you think when the waves reach 3-5 feet that the PU would actually feel better than the EPS?? You did mention that the EPS didnt feel as sharp in the 3-4 feet.

  • @surfnshowreviews7777

    @surfnshowreviews7777

    I don't think the PU will matter when the surf gets bigger... I think it's the board design. It will go in 4' surf but that's not the ideal wave size for this model. I like EPS in 1-4' surf better compared to PU but it's a preference. Cheers!!

    Robert marks I like your choices so far... the Sampler and PM were favorites of mine. The RW fits better in the pocket compared to the Sampler and pocket surfs better compared to the PM. The RW is really quick like the Sampler but the PM out paddles them both. All 3 boards are sick but if I had to choose 1 for surf in 1-3’ range I would go RW in Spine-Tek. It does it all in small surf..... cheers

    Cory Brown I like the Peregrine’s better. However.... I like the RW best in 1-2’ surf with the AMT Twin + Trailer. The AMT is Al Merrick Twins and they are super upright. You can shred the RW with the AMT’s in 1-4’ surf no problem and it’s a game changer in speed. I recommend those fins first in Honeycomb.

    Hi Noel, great review as always. I got the RW Spintek a few months back and love it. I gotta say I catch about 50% more waves in any given session even when the waves are not great. I am 5'10 145 (+ 7ish lbs with a 4/3 wetsuit) and went for the 5'10 (34.5 liters) as it was what was available at the time. While this extra foam is super helpful easily getting me in to waves and less noticable in bigger surf, I kind of feel that in the small stuff it feels a bit bulky. So, was thinking about downsizing a bit but not wanting to go too low on the volume. Thoughts on the 5'10 vs 5'9? I am hoping to keep the "ease of catching waves" and remove the "bulkiness" :)

    Hi Noel, if I'm looking for more versatile options in FCS2 range for RW what do you think between FCS II Matt Biolos PC Carbon and FCS II AM PC? First seems to fit more for such a low entry rocker groveler, second is AM and by some reviews it seems to fit quite well, however it has much more rake.

  • @surfnshowreviews7777

    @surfnshowreviews7777

    Gábor Ádám I think the MB fins will suit the RW good in some peaky beach break waves. The AM fins have excellent built in speed with the rake but it will pivot a bit slower. It’s really up to you on how you want to surf that board. Another set of fins to consider for the RW is the AM Twin + Trailer. They are very upright and go insane in the RW.

    Morning Noel, currently have a rocket 9 thats running out of life. Need some input on if I should get another rocket 9 (really enjoyed the board), or if i should get a rocket wide. Would be used as my daily driver for 2-6 surf. Seems like you enjoyed the wide more, but can it handle those 6 foot days like the 9 does? Main concern would be the flatter entry rocker for steeper faces. Currently ride my 9 as a 2+1

    Hey Noel, great review! Can’t wait to get my hands on those proto future fins in the near future. I am torn between the neckbeard 2 and the rocket wide, both in spine tek. I have actually tried both boards as demos but didn’t have the ideal waves to really feel out the boards. I surf in Santa Cruz where the majority are mushier waves. I have a PU OG flyer as a daily driver (I’m getting spinetek partially for better durability). What did you like and dislike about each board? since you were able to try both in ideal conditions. I’m looking for the board I’ll get the most out of, that I can take out in most conditions leading up to the days I should use my flyer.

    Kainalu The RW has excellent speed and good pocket surfing in 1-3’ surf. For a Groveler in 1-3’ surf the RW is unmatched for performance for me. The NB2 can do it all very well... the 1 board quiver. It’s the best Daily Driver I have ridden to date. 1-6’ surf this NB2 shines. Good speed, performance, airs, sick off the bottom. You cannot go wrong with either. Both boards excel in mushy waves. Cheers

The Idea is to keep the easy paddling characteristic but widening the wave range to make it look more like a daily driver. Do you think it's a good Idea? Hi Noel, another Great well articulated review ! I have been riding the rocket wide in Spine Tech around Asia for month's, It's an awesome little board in 1 - 3 Agree it does not have enough rail line in the water for 4 ft up ish but don't think it's meant too, it definitely feels like a small wave pocket performer than can still grovel also when the waves are lacking, My question would be what do you think would be a good Daily Driver to overlap the Rocket Wides higher end Like a HS Holy Grail or a Pyzel Phantom without going into OG Flyer territory ? Love to see you do the New JS Black Box 3 In Hi Fi Epoxy tech too, Cheer's Mate !

I’m experiencing feeling like I’m getting stuck at the top of the wave when I’m paddling into it a wave on this board like I don’t on my other boards. Noel, Any reports about the Rocket Wide as a quad? Wondering if I should order it with 3 or 5 fin boxes? And what's your opinion about how much having empty Futures Fins boxes affects the water flow under the board and thus the ride of the board? I noticed that neither you or any other high level surfer seem to use the Futures Fins filler inserts to fill any empty fin box gaps. Have you ever tried the box fillers?

    caleb odam I haven’t heard of anyone trying the RW as a Quad. I am sure it’s fun though.... if your a big Quad guy then I would go 5 fin boxes. My thoughts are not on the boxes being empty and affecting water flow. I am sure there are some issues there but not too worried about that. For me it’s more about flex in the tail.... 3 fin boxes will minimize tail flex and 5 fin boxes even more. I don’t think I realized how much it affects the flex until I tried some glass on fins. I say have fun and if you like Quads then you should try it and if your worried about water flow then use the inserts when your not rocking the Quad set up.

    Great review as usual Noel! I'm an inch over 6ft, and around 150 pounds. I'm 16 years old so keep in mind I will probably still grow a bit more. My normal shortboard is a 5'10 ½ Fever from Channel Islands, and about 26.4 liters. I recently picked up a 5'8 Rocket Wide, and its about 30.3 liters. I took for a few surfs already, and it feels much to big for me. Not in length but in the thickness and how buoyant it is. I'm pretty skinny for my height, and the Rocket Wide feels thick enough to the point of where I feel like I can't whip through turns very well. It just feels very big under my feet. I'm going to trade it in for a shorter version of the Rocket Wide, but was wanting your opinion on what size you think I should downsize to. I was thinking a 5'6 or a 5'7. What are your thoughts? For all those wondering, just hear Noel's words about it being the best 1-3 ft groveler, I would agree. Just got this board in Spine-Tek which is ridiculously good. I surfed it twice so far in 2-4 ft waves at (Beacons in SD) that are kind of rolly with steep inside sections. It is crazy fun to surf because it generates an insane amount of speed through all of the flat spots. Speed is the key to everything we do as surfers and this board has it in spades. I was smiling like crazy at how great it is. I had the CI AM2's in it and they are a lethal combo together. I would also say go Spine-Tek if you've never surfed it because of the way that tech launches you out of rebounds and turns also enhances the speed characteristics of the board. I have a Holy Grail, CI Fever, and now this Rocket Wide and those are pretty much the best 3 boards I have ever surfed. Times are great for us all and with Noel's stellar reviews, it's a win-win for all. For all the SoCal friends, get ready, some nice SW is filling in and let the fun begin. :)

    No worries my pleasure. Honestly, all 3 of those boards are so good I can have fun on any of them. My Fever is a PU, but it still goes great in even smaller stuff. I rode the Grail today in 2-4 foot surf, but just as easily could have taken the RW. The RW is so much fun, I think you should definitely get one. I've only ridden it twice, but is a magical board. I will most likely surf the Fever 3 foot plus when the waves have some punch. All 3 of those boards are so much fun, you could just about pull any of them off the rack and surf them in 1-4 foot surf and have an amazing time. I am going to take the RW out this Friday in some smaller stuff, but I was quite surprised at how well it went in some solid four footers. I really feel like I have dream quiver now. I love all 3 of those boards equally. I think that is the goal. If you get a RW, you will not regret it. Good luck and post back how it goes if you get one.

    Thanks for the quick reply legend! Yeah i'm honestly tossing up between RW and a podmod... I'm pretty much the same height and weight as noel so its sick seeing him in action and although he says he likes the RW best in my opinion he looks better on the pod mod! You ever ridden a pod?

    Does the RW have better low end than the Pyzel phantom? It seems like the RW would sit right between a pyzel gremlin and phantom (2 boards I have experience with).

    So the ultra joe goes better when the surf gets above 3 feet? I know I shouldn’t compare the rocket wide and the ultra joe but I really like these two boards and was leaning towards the rw until you said it started to struggle above 3 ft and I remember you saying the uj went good from 1-4+

    The Overstoker Watch the Surfboard Wars on the RW... I pushed it some bigger surf and it went better. The RW and UJ will shred 1-4’ surf... beyond that I say get on a Fever.

    Noel how does the rocket wide compare to the untitled. I know the ride differently but are they designed for the same type of surf conditions??

    michael koch The Untitled is more of a Daily Driver. It can grovel pretty good but I like it better 2-6’ surf. The RW is best in 1-3’+.

    vini ruemel2 When I did the Fever review I weighed 170lbs and now I weigh 160lbs. Since I lost 10lbs I dropped roughly 1 Liter of foam.

    How would you compare/recommend the rocket wide vs pyzel white tiger vs CI G-Skate? I live on the East Coast and want a groveler for North Florida, South Carolina, or OBX. Usually looking to surf a smaller board in 3-5 ft waves because that is a good day on this coast lol. Thanks!

    Which has more down the line flow? I’ve been liking vee bottoms lately, the way they go rail to rail and make wiser boards feel narrower. Mod 2 has vee vs concave on the rocket wide....M2 has more of a fish feel I guess??

    Matthew Jones Yes more Fish like.... it’s a bit wider across the mid section of the board and not as thinned out in the nose area... so make sure you don’t go to much volume on the M2.
