The Holy Grail is a great daily driver for waves that range in the 1-6’ surf. The overall outline of this board is unlike anything I have seen or ridden in my 34 years of surfing.
The tail is unique in many ways and the combination of rocker, and bottom contours make this board user friendly and silky smooth from rail to rail with speed.
The Holy Grail in 1-3 surf is very fast down the line because of its low - medium entry rocker and straight or staged rocker running through the center of the board. It also has the wide point a little front from center for additional foam under the chest which makes it a great paddler.
In the 3-6’ surf I felt confident off the bottom and in the pocket due to its medium to aggressive tail rocker, and pulled in tail design. This board combined with the Future Flex construction makes this board very versatile and fun to ride in variety of wave sizes and conditions.
This is a favorite of mine for 2017 for sure and I believe everyone should have one in their quiver!!!

Sick review! Matching up fins with the boards is always very helpful for people as there are so many options. Out of all your reviews this year, I think this board was one of the funnest to watch you surf on. I really enjoyed My HG at lowers the other day, it's a keeper. I know you love and prefer to ride smaller boards, but It looked a tad small for you in the bigger waves. Next big anticipated review...Gamma baby! Thanks again for another polished review!

Amazing technical description breakdown, zero fluff - talks the talk ✅ Then goes out and slays all manner of waves - walks the walk ✅ Gets my "Like" and definitely hit the subscribe button ✅ And now I'm talking to HS about ordering one HG and one HK both FF ✅ Epic channel - THANK YOU Noel!! Answered every question I had and really appreciate your focus on fin selection with all your reviews. I'm a fanatic about base concavities/contours + fin selection, you were the voice inside my head 💯 EDIT: HAVE to add - the filler music?? Absolutely killer... Just killer.

Great review on a board I've heard nothing but praise from ordinary journeyman surfers as well. At first glance I always think Noel is Slater cuz of the obvious, but his power, style and flow are so similar that it makes it look like he's making any board work. It's his honest, basic opinion though that translates to the every person surfer out there cuz he's riding off the rack models. The shapers and board manufacturers are lucky to have him. Always a class act Noel even in the face of criticism. Keep up the great work my man!

Oh yeah for sure, ya man your favorites are stacking up. At this pace you're going to have to do a showdown of you're favorites! So I've really come to appreciate a single concave and a flat deck cause it flies! Is this board comparable to that feel? You looked loose and like you were hitting your turns the way you wanted to. So if this was considered a daily driver, what would it be comparable to in CI board quiver? The boards you've been reviewing look really fun and how you got lowers to what looks like to yourself is unbelievable. I know you're stoked! Great review like always, keep posting them and I'll keep liking them. Have fun, CHEERS!!!!!

Cheers and I am glad you liked the review. I like boards that have a single concave too... they are really fast. This board kind of stands alone for me and I have not ridden something that feels like it either. The tail and overall design is very unique and silky smooth. Sorry i don't have a board at the moment to compare it too in the CI line up. A great daily driver for me in the CI quiver is the Fever at 5'8 x 19 x 2 5/16 or the stock 5'8" OG Flyer. Those two boards go good for me in waves 2-6'. Small waves 1-3' still the Sampler and Pod Mod.

@@ncncam23 I got an el tomo fish and felt multiple times like it was “getting stuck” like you just said. Especially when trying to pump/carve down the line, like when I would go to the top of the wave to go back down I would get stuck and catch a rail or something. I’m wondering what the Fuck is going on. I’m a good surfer and have never had this happen, but I usually ride album boards which are I guess a little more forgiving or something? Hoping maybe I just need to get used to it but I’m still wondering why I’m catching rails

I've found this board to be magical off the backhand but maybe I just don't care for these non-PU boards but I feel like I'm just not getting down the line as fast off my forehand. I really need to be getting a lot of speed otherwise turns just feel off. I do agree esp off the backhand very confident in bigger surf. Guess I need to try this out with quads.

Hi Noel, Firstly, thanks for putting these reviews up, they are hands down the best ones out there, and I’m clearly not the only one who appreciates them. A quick question here if you happen to have the time: How do you think this board would work on slightly more hollow barreling waves? The rocker seems pretty tame... I’m almost certainly going to get one but wondering if I should also start looking for something with a little more rocker for a trip I’m planning out. Many thanks mate! a.

@@surfnshowreviews7777Thanks heaps for your reply Noel. The Ghost is exactly what I had in mind for a stepup. We’re probably going to the Mentawais in the low season with an intermediate group so I wouldn’t think they’ll be throwing us at shallow 8 foot barrels… but, you never know haha. I think the HG would work wonders for me at home (New Zealand) as I’m mostly surfing a Rusty Smoothie (very close to a Hypto). I’m also considering the Phantom which would translate well into a Ghost. I really appreciate your insight, Cheers!

Anyways, I surfed the Holy Grail this morning with the Merrick quad set up in size medium in the new air core construction. The waves were a lot bigger than I had anticipated ( well overhead) on the bigger sets on that back row. The fins held good even in the bigger throaty sections. The quad set up gave it a flair right from the start and it did stiffen up the board a bit but the hold was there and it was loose enough to maneuver.

Hey Noel! Thanks for the awesome review!! I’m David from Costa Rica. I’m about to buy a holy grail in a month and they only have it in 5’7” (26.9L) and 5’9” (29.5L) stock here. I’m 5’8” and weigh 172lbs - so kind of like you. How did that 5’6” feel and would you pick that size for your regular short board? On the HS webpage I get a suggested volume range for this board from 29.64L to 27.69L. So it would seem the 5’7” would be a little short considering it’s 26.9L. Any suggestions on if I should get the 5’7” or 5’9” stock considering I usually surf at punchy beach breaks here in CR? I feel inclined towards the 5’9” to be conservative in a volume-wise way but am afraid it will feel too bulky. Thanks!!

Noel!!! Your surfing on this board was sooo dandy (Slater doppelganger)! I'm torn between the Happy in the EPS/Spine-Tek and the HG FF. Your surfing on this board in waves shoulder+ looked so much smoother and connected in comparison to the Happy review. I'm an intermediate surfer and looking for a good all-around "performance" (for my skill level) board in shoulder to a couple feet OH, beachbreak/point break (in EPS, for durability). Thanks Noel you led me the right direction. My money was well spent!!! my 2 cents after having both. Keep in mind not quite apples to apples since the volume of my hypto is 1.5 liters more. To me that is significant - feel difference. I am a huge fan of the holy grail after one session (in wedging messed up dumping surf) it really turns incredible and is sensitive. its a unique board. Sportscar (holy grail) vs SUV (Hypto). But to compare properly I believe the volume and fin setup should be the same. By the way the Holy Grail paddles really well. Holy grail is more of a pocket surfing board meant for turns and precision surfing. I am not really a fan of the hypto but maybe its that I got too big of one. It is hard to turn. PS - I am no pro - I am an intermediate older dude who can surf reasonably well but is looking to turn more in the critical part of the wave to get better speed. I having surfed solid for over 15 years maybe once or twice a week.

Stoked you like the show. The Holy Grail and Untitled are both sick and I recommend the FF Construction for sure. The Torsion Spring construction looks good from Rusty too. I know the Torsion Spring Technology uses an Extruded Foam which is a closed cell foam meaning it will not pull in water if it gets a ding. The flex characteristics are good on the Extruded EPS foam too. I have not tried the Torsion Spring yet but XTR uses the Extruded EPS Foam core and I love it. If you choose to go with a Rusty I would suggest talking to them over the phone to make sure the Heckler is the right board for the Torsion Spring Technology. Cheers

Good advice Noel! My local surf shop up here in Northern Orange County has a Heckler in Torsion Spring that I've felt up and interestingly it does not appear to be much lighter than standard PU, probably due to the carbon/kevlar fiber. I figure that may be a plus during moderate off shore and/or bumpy conditions as compared to an ultra light board such as a carbon wrap. Regardless, thanks again for the excellent content and I hope you are scoring waves!

  • @surfnshowreviews7777

    @surfnshowreviews7777

My pleasure... I agree the added weight to the EPS will help in the wind and reduce chatter that EPS boards have. The weight would be caused from a heavier glass job which makes the board a bit more durable too. The Carbon is a bit lighter so I don't think to much added weight is coming from that. If you get one please make sure to hit me up and let us all know how it the Rusty Torsion Spring Technology feels under your feet.

Yeah I think a lot of viewers try to pin point it to a specific board but if you rip you rip, doesn't really matter too much about the board as long as you've got more or less the right board for the conditions. You don't see too drastic differences between the boards in his surfing but again he's still able to feel which ones click more than others. Fins are definitely becoming more and more interesting, Noel doing an excellent job on explaining the different fin templates.

Rikard Ängermark That’s a tough... Both boards are epic. I like the Fever as a HPSB and I also like it as a daily driver in my Groveler dims. 5’7” x 19 x 2 3/8. The HG is a legit Daily Driver and it will do HPSB turns too. I think if your surfing hollow punchy surf then go Fever... if your surfing a bit slower waves and punchy or hollow sometimes then go HG.

Try it with a Twin + Trailer in shoulder waves and under. It could go pretty good. As a pure twin it will be way to loose and slide out easily. One main reason is the side fin boxes are set for Thruster…. And that is way to far forward compared to twin fin box placement.

The side cut tail offers quick rail to rail turns and it’s wider tail block offers great down the line speed. The HG needs a fin with a lot of rake to maximize performance. I would say the main difference is the MB is a small performance board and the HG is a Daily Driver with a HPSB feel.

So let me get this off my mind before I forget, This board has a controversial design for me. The board has secondary small wave design features with primary good wave performance features which translates being able to grovel but only for experienced surfers who are at that advanced intermediate level and up. I say this because this board comes alive in bigger waves and has the ability to grovel but whoever decides to grovel in it has to be a good paddler because most boards that are made for small waves have a flatter entry rocker for that get up and go right out the gate. The HG has a medium entry rocker which creates a bit of drag on take offs but once it's up and running that inverted rail line really zings down the line creating that flow that Noel talks about in his review. The HG is also not very forgiving due to it's high performance features such as the inverted rail, and pulled in nose. Even though the rails are full, the apex is low and there is a subtle tapering design that progresses as you move to the back of the board. The wide point, rolled V and the construction (future flex) gives it small wave attributes, making the board feel buoyant and responsive, however the pulled in nose requires that you lay stream line on your board so that your chest lays right over that wide point which in my opinion doesn't leave much wiggle room for those novice riders that may not have all sweet spots on the board dialed in yet.

  • @dkilla01

I would order this board in more literage then you might think you need so if you're in between dims I would order up until I had this board dialed in for the novice to beginners and even to better surfers that are transitioning to this board because it flexes different than most boards out there due to it's carbon frame

wow, this looks like a really good breakdown, I surf with 30 liters on PU boards, and I'm a intermediate surfer, usually surf at beack breaks. So my question is, should I get this board at 29,5 lt or go lower on volume,? so I won't get sling shotted on bigger waves . Do you have a HG ?

Excellent advice on this - I found as well due to the construction it made quick takeoffs tricky as the resistance from the EPS could make the board shuffle on the pop-up. I rode mine in my regular shortboard volume, tested it in waves waist to head high and it was fun but I don't get good enough conditions to surf it regularly enough. It needs a clean and punchy groundswell to get going IMO.

Just got one and love it. Totally still relevant so don't overlook it although it's an older model. Noel's review is spot on. Wide full volume in the front makes it glide and generate speed on its own. But the tail features make it super loose, almost squirrelly. I was really surprised by that as I was expecting it to be on the stiff side with the fuller outline and dims. Very impressive design for everyday surfers.

Hey @Noel great video! Keep it UP! I was wondering what would you recomend is more fun for 2-6ft surf, Tomo Cymatic or the Holy Grail? I am an intermediate+ surfer looking for something that gives performance with easy padling. Judging from your videos both are great but you just look a bit less loose/quick in the cymatic, i know it was a great deal of rocker but somehow you look like you're having more freedom/fluidity in the Holy Grail and less in the Cymatic. Do you agree? both options seem great tho Thanks a lot

I know these are really two different boards but for a daily driver how would you compare it to the Hypto Krypto? Did you ride this near your normal volume? I am 5'7 " and 180 so I take a bit more volume.

  • @surfnshowreviews7777

Walter Schubert That’s a tough comparison... the Hypto has that wide hybrid nose so you can ride that a few inches shorter compared to the HG. The HG is quick and responsive like a normal performance board but still grovels. I think the HG surfs like a HP board and the Hypto is more of a hybrid.

Hi! I just got a 5´10" HL at 30.87L. I'm 5´9" and 170lb intermediate mostly riding steep reef breaks where even on small days the take off is fairly hollow. I was thinking of pairing it up with FCS II PCC HS fins sized large to help with speed generating and pivoting on smaller days and some performers medium for medium/bigger days. Do you think it will be too much fin and too stiff for smaller speed generating, meaning I should stick to the mediums? Or would you recommend a different fin altogether? Thanks in advance for your input.
