Changing Traxxas Shock Oil (1/16 Slash, Revo & Summit shocks) R/C Arsenal

Ойын-сауық

How to change the shock oil on a Traxxas Slash 1/16 model to be specific. The shocks are the same for all Traxxas 1/16 models. Stock shock oil is 30 weight. I changed it to 60 weight as well as increased the springs on the front to the Revo Green Springs and the rear with the Revo Black Springs. I attempted to get as close as a vid as I could to help clarify any details. If you have any questions put them in the comments and I'll get to them asap. Thanks for watching!

    This guys doesn’t change shock oil on the regular. I can tell because he doesn’t laugh at the sound made when slamming the shaft in and out emptying the oil. Hang on I take it back he uses 1/2 sockets to hold shock bodies vertical when filling that’s gold baby!! Great video man I like videos exactly like this that get straight to the business and don’t have excessive life stories and lengthy apologies to your patron about the lack of videos because you became a father.

    I think you figured it out but just to make sure, the shock oil primarily controls the compression and the springs control the rebound. On the basic upgrade vid for the Revo I put down which springs I'm using. Summit blues in the front and Summit purples in the rear. With those it can fully rebound if you turn the collars down but I don't leave it set up like that. It handles better if it doesn't fully rebound.

    My MERV is stock [not VXL] so i was wondering whether i should buy a 2s lipo battery or upgrade the motor to the Traxxas 3370 Velineon VXL-3M Brushless. which one?

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well you can run it on a 2s so I'd get one of those! At some point if you upgrade the motor to the Velineon you'll really like that. But definitely, a 2s lipo will be much better. You'll need a new charger tho. Not sure if you got another charger or just the one that the truck came with.

    no i got a charger because charging it from our car was really annoying. would there be any problems if i were to run 3s? or should i just run 2s in parallel?

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm not aware of a 3s that will fit in it. In my opinion a 2s is just fine. Running in parallel will extend the run times and if you run it in series that would boost the power...more like a 4s if you're running 2s's. I found some 2s 2500 mAh lipos from SPC and those completely fill that battery compartment. Had to do a little filing around the battery door just for the wires to come out. I'd recommend those lipos and to me it runs great on them. I don't recommend running them in series as you may burn up your ESC. Just my opinion though and some folks have done it.

    Question if I could throw it out there... I've got a Merv. Yet running a 1/8th motor an ESC. What kind of suspension oil/shock springs would be best? Cant run cool overs as the motor is too big. Currently running 100 weight shock oil. Yet get next to no rebound. Bottom out any time throttle is applied. Any ideas?

    #93 spring from ace is supposed to be extra stiff. Thats probably what im gonna do. I have the same issue Im also running a 1/8th scale motor and esc in my merv and it does sit super low especially with 2 x 2200mah 2cell lipos. Ive got the batteries in series for 4 cell and im running a 120amp esc and a 2850kv 3670 motor. I know your comment is old though so if you have come up with any other solutions in that time im all ears!

    2mattley the purple springs for the traxxas Summit 1/16 is the hardest. Then the Summit Blue springs. On the traxxas website there is a spring chart. The revo and summit springs will all fit on the Slash shocks.

    2mattley I do not know what is best for a road or street car. I do know the summit purple springs are the hardest you can get and then the summit blue springs. I do not have any road cars and am unsure what is best. I have been changing my Slash to a drifter and am using revo green springs on the front and revo black springs on the back. Those seem to work well but I've never tried running the truck on any carpet tracks.

    Ya sometimes it fails to post comments, not sure what the problem is but that happens for me also. I'm not sure if you want to go to 90 wt on the 1/16. May be too stiff for handling. 90 wt may be good for the 1/10 scale though but haven't personally tried it to honestly say. I really like the 60 wt for the 1/16 and the summit purple on the rear and blue on the front.

    what about 80w ? would that be good overall for bashing and speed runs ?

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    7 жыл бұрын

    80w may be a little stiff. To further explain and if you already know my apologies....the shock oil is what controls the speed of compression. Heavier oil = slower compression. The springs also assist with that but they primarily work to return the shock to it's adjusted limit back out. I've never tried 80w oil on a 1/16 scale but I feel like it may be a little too stiff for cornering. You want the shocks to absorb some of the body roll but if they are too stiff it may rollover easier. Just my opinion but I'm completely satisfied with the 60w for a 1/16. What model/scale are you looking to adjust?

    R/C Arsenal Thanks for reply. Just one more question is that setup good for jumps? I just got this truck yesterday and I'm surprised traxxas ships this out with such a bad suspension setup.

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it was about the best setup I could find....it doesn't jump all that great though. You have to leave the rear somewhat softer so it doesn't kick the rear up. To be honest nearly every manufacturer sends things out like that in hopes you buy the upgrade parts. Really no surprise with that. Only traxxas model I've found with good suspension out of the box is that Slash 1/10 platinum edition LCG....much higher price tag tho of course.

    Hey is there a way to stop the mini e revo from chassis slapping on the floor and if i was to get a mini slash cuz i put bigger wheels on it with wheel wideners

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    8 жыл бұрын

    First question, if you set it up so it never bottoms out it will really handle bad. It was designed to be bottom out so to say. I'd say some options are get a tbone skid plate to help take a brunt of the slamming. Another option would be larger tires and another would be to get the rockers from a summit which would help lift it up some more but in general, it's ok if it's bottoming out. My revo is setup to handle well but if I drop it from roughly 12 inches it will bottom out but it handles great and the suspension works really well in the way I have it configured.

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    8 жыл бұрын

    Second question you had, if you're debating on slash or revo in the 1/16 scale I highly recommend getting the revo. By design it just performs better over a wider variety of terrain. By the time you change the slash A-arms and everything else you basically will have a revo. It would be cheaper in the long run to get a revo and change the body mounts and put a slash body on it. I have an extra slash body and plan to do that in the near future and when I do I'll post a vid to show exactly what you'll need for that. Haven't gotten to it yet but it's on my to do list.

    What do the different oil weights do?

  • @RCArsenal

    @RCArsenal

    James Wood the weight of oil slows down the initial compression of a shock. There’s a plunger on the inside of the shock. So a heavier weight oil creates more resistance. The spring helps but primarily rebounds the suspension.

    The oil slows the motion of the shock piston. Heavier oil, more friction. Lighter weight oil, less friction. Springs also control the inward motion. Springs are the only part that pushes the shock piston back out and sets the ride height.
