Hello Sugar, the wind Instrument that played in The Corps of Drum Bands are Called "Fifes". They look like a very Small Flute or Piccolo & are played in the same way but are a far higher sound, similar to a Whistle. They usually have 6 Finger Holes & an "embouchure" hole, which is the one that the player Blows across. They were the Wind Instruments mostly used in The American Wars of Independence & Civil Wars & were used along with the Drums to give Orders to the Soldiers on the Battlefield as they were high enough in note to be heard over the noise of Battle. Other than that they were used with the Drums to mark the Tempo when Troops were Marching.

@@e.chambers2973 Hello! That may well be the case, my information came from The Corp of Drums , an Article in Forces Net & from the Corps of Drums Society. The Society if fairly well Up to Date but the Other 2 Sources may have been Older Information. Thank you for the Correction, I'll alter my Notes accordingly & find a Source for the Information. That's the 1 Problem with Online Research, it's not always dated & maybe superseded. Enjoy Your Weekend!

A great video. It was good to see more of the marching guards as well as the band.

What is the frequency of practice the guys in the band get? Is it everyday or how often are they afforded the opportunity?

@@vickyRoyalHistory That is a very extensive answer, with a lot of detail for effectively saying "I don't know" to the actual questions. The worst things they've done recently, from a musical point of view, was get rid of the Irish Guards Corps of Drums as they were the best band they had. This particular band could do with quite a bit of practice and I know they are soldiers first and musicians second but the standard is not very good, in my opinion.

Before covid, the Corps of Drums had a bit more time to practice, but now they are reverting to playing the standard marches instead (Hazelmere, Galanthia, Adjutant, Prussian Glory, Household Brigade). This is due to more commitments they have nowadays, which takes away their practice. However, the Irish Guards Corps of Drums are the only Corps of Drums that still play their distinctive tunes (Mud Cabin, Irish Guards, Foggy Dew, The Star of County Down, The Sash, Kosovo Micks) but they do still play the standard marches too. The Welsh Guards Corps of Drums in my opinion, their side drums, Bb flutes, and their F flutes need a bit more tuning. Other than that, their playing sounds good.

@@j-larne I take your point but then as I tried to Convey to you, All the Corps of Drums in the British Army have varied Allocations of Practice that Depends what the Role of their Regiment is. You asked a Very General Question, if you had asked about a Particular Corps of Drums, you may of gotten a more precise Answer. The 3 Corps of Drums in the House Hold Division , which is Mainly Ceremonial Duties, would get more Practice than a Corps of Drums who was not attached to a Normal Infantry Unit who does not perform Ceremonial Duties. I would Suggest you try doing your own research instead of asking a Specific Question about a Group of Bands that are very Different even though they do the same thing. Common sense would tell you that a Corps of Drums who have been deployed to say Afghanistan are going to get a Damn Sight less Practice time than a Corps of Drums who are Part of a Ceremonial Regiment that is Primarily Public Duty. The Irish Guards have the Pipes & Drums, which is Part of their Heritage, although in Northern Ireland there are a lot of Drums & Fife Bands, the Pipes go back a lot Further. You have the Right to your own Opinion regarding the Quality of this Band.

⁠@@j-larne The Irish Guards Corps of Drums have always held a high standard. This is because of the marches they play, the quality instruments they have, how well their instruments are tuned, and the amount of practice hours they get (and they also produce excellent Drums Majors). The Welsh Guards Corps of Drums however, have been using the same drums since the 1990s, but they have been refurbished in 2007. Their flutes were bought in 2019, but are very out of tune, but in this video, their Bb flutes are tuned, but the F flutes are not. Their drums however, need to be tuned or should just be replaced entirely, but the cost to replace the drums is very very expensive. Another difference is the Irish Guards Corps of Drums is a machine gun platoon. The Welsh Guards Corps of Drums is an assault pioneer platoon, and it’s probably why they get limited practice.

that's funny - i must have been asleep - the poem says "They're changing the guard at Buckingham Palace - Christopher Robin went down with Alice" - so when did it change to Windsor - Are the Whistleblowers in tune? did 2 people get left behind and have to run to catch up - are the arms out of time with the band leader? - is this CGI'd or AI'd or something else?

The soldiers in the Corps of Drums are regular infantry soldiers. Many of them did not have any musical experience before joining the army. The Corps of Drums are a special platoon within the battalion e.g. machine gun or reconnaissance platoon depending on the regiment.
