Changing a 1978 cx500 water pump seal with the engine in the frame

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I was having a hard time finding the original “ shep” method, all the old links were dead so I wanted to make this to help keep the information around..
My original seal was probably still OK after finding the missing shim( was that my fault??!).. however now it has a brand new seal and the correct shim!
Hope this helps, keep the old bikes alive!!

Nice! I did my shep method on my 80 deluxe last year and it worked really well. I'll probably still drop my engine at some point and do the proper fix later.

Yeah always a good idea to change the oil seal on the other side of the water pump seal when the engine is apart! Don’t forget the o ring on the cam adjuster 😅

Good video thanks! I have an 81 500 guessing the same Yamaha seal for mine? Also any issues emptying the old metal cup before putting in this new seal?

Thanks for the feedback- should be the same seal number. Getting it clean was a pain.. I suggest getting comfy with some good light, multiple picks, tiny flat screwdriver and a small dremel wire brush were how I got my seal cup clean. Took about 20 min since the glue tore the old seal

It looked easy getting the new seal separated from its cup but I just tried the same thing and the darn seal cracked up on me and was also not willing to come out after having it on med heat for 4 or 5min I was worried about melting the seal I guess waiting till you can smell the rubber melting is the key?:/ Any thoughts

@@michaelgamber5408 that stinks , maybe a little more heat.. also I would say time is a function at play also, I had to pull with about 15lbs force and hold that for a few seconds and then the glue slowly let go. It was hard to balance grabbing it hard enough to pull yet not crack it. You can also pull too hard and rip the rubber so if it doesn’t come off with a decent tug then it needs more heat

Thanks for making this. Don’t you need to glue the seal into the cup?

I used the rtv but you could also use rubber cement. the spring tension alone will keep it sealed but the glue helps. Just be sure not to get any on the faces they have to be clean clean!
