I repeat: the most scientifically accurate but visually rapid test of hydrophobicity is to expose the panel to a source of steam/ultra fine mist (such as in a bathroom with the hot shower running) and see which panel has the smallest microdroplets on it. The most "foggy" looking panel is the winner. The drippiest or easiest to see a reflection of yourself is the loser. Small drops equals high hydrophobicity, large drops equals lower hydrophobicity.

This is what I was thinking. It’s possible the QD has some sort of protectant in it. Maybe do a quick foam wash after the clay step going forward to eliminate the variable the clay lube of choice presents.

The quick detailer most likely have ingredients that will make the surface hydrophobic. For the next test, I would suggest using a nanoskin decon sponge with ONR or better yet, McKee's 37 N-914 as a clay lube. There should be no heavy contamination that requires claying on there since you are not driving these hoods so no road film or heavy iron contaminants. I am guessing you have a lot of water spotting on them besides the little bit of iron, so doing iron decon and a water spot remover would be my suggestion. Great to watch these tests, made me change some of the products I was using. Thanks Scott!

@Scott HD Excellent series, really appreciate all the work you put into these. I sent these videos to my friends and after one asked me what happens when the coating "wears out" (does it chip/flake off? does it leave any weird residual artifacts? etc), I was left with so many questions of my own. How does the product fail in the first place? It no longer adheres to the substrate (clear coat or ppf), and particles of it break/wear off? I assume the breakdown of hydrophobic properties comes from a degradation of the surface finish, ie. it's now slightly rough due to voids/defects vs being much closer to "perfectly smooth" when the coating is fresh. This allows the coating to be "revived" with a booster spray by filling in the voids? 1) If you were to re-coat this panel, what would the process look like? Is there still residual coating left even on the squares that have failed that needs to be removed before reapplying? 2) Would the process change if you were going to reapply the same coating in a given square vs apply a different coating over the original? 3) Chemical removal vs mechanical removal? 4) If using mechanical removal methods, how do you tell when the coating is removed with minimal removal of the substrate? Can the coating be measured with a paint thickness gauge? 5) Do you notice certain areas on cars where the coating tends to wear out sooner, or does the entire coating tend to wear uniformly? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just trying to understand how these coatings work on a micro scale. I've found it very difficult to find any scientific information on detailing products and practices. However, there is no shortage of marketing material!

Hi Scott. Another very informative video. Thank you for all your hard work. I'd like to toss in 3 thoughts for consideration on future tests... 1) No wash instant detailers. These claim to rejuvenate hydrophobics and protection with just a spray & wipe. 2) Tire dressings. Do any tire treatments keep tires shiney and clean looking without throwing goo down the sides of the vehicle? Do any keep a finish more then a few days? 3) Glass coatings. Will any keep windshields clean and hydrophobic for any length of time? Are any easier or harder to apply without smearing? RainX vs NuFinish vs ceramic sprays...? Thanks for your consideration. I always enjoy learning from your videos 👍

Great video as always! Thank you! The first thing I thought was it has to be the clay lube that "seemed" to bring the failed ones back. The proof in the pudding as they say for ME is... just a simple wash with something like CarPro Reset and skip the iron decon and clay. Someone I know who recently got out of detailing has a friend that does Xpel Fusion and Car Pro Classic and he's pushing me to go with Xpel with a 4 year warranty. I haven't seen much on Xpel and I don't put much stock in warranties. I've done personal cars in CarPro UK 3.0, but I don't have the time anymore. My local professional options are... @@BlackHawkPSU I think it is fine. I have used toppers extensively whenever I would wash my car, so I cannot really speak of its durability, but this review clearly shows it will outlast most of other stuff. When it comes to looks of it, I think like anything else it looks great for the first few months, and then eventually improper washing technique, bird drops, bugs and rain will cause it to not looks so flashy anymore. Especially if you do not have a garage. Impo, I think that ceramic coatings for the cost are not really worth it especially when there are products for less than $30 that can provide more gloss and slickness. They do not last as long, but they are way easier to apply. Even pro detailers say that the paint correction is the main reason why your paint looks good and not the coating.

@@urbanedgeautodetailing Essence+ is just like any filler/glaze that's only going to last for so long. It doesn't have abrasives to do true correction, and therefore shouldn't be considered a polish. In a perfect world, Scott would have done a 50/50 showing the effect of both a water spot remover and the clay bar in each section, but that would've been a lot of work. Even still, while a water spot remover isn't as abrasive as a clay bar, I'm all set with having to use any of these acid based products just to remove water spots for the following reasons: 1) You have to tape off any glass before you water spot removal as acid + glass don't get along 2) Taking the "correct" safety precautions to properly handle acid based products is a pain and personally not worth my time (eye protection, skin protection, respiratory protection) 3) While companies say acid based products don't harm the longevity of their coatings, I remain skeptical until I test those claims

@@derek723 If you re-read my comment I also added Essence as is it a true polish. The level of correction with Essence is pad dependent. I also stayed that Essence+ is for filling in scuffs and swirls not removing them. Also P&S Envy is another good option for polishing a coated vehicle. With the proper techniques pads and products ANYTHING can be polished, coated or not. In my 20+ year detailing career I have been told that textured plastics can't be polished, only dressed. I have been polishing textured plastics for close to 15 years.

The clay bar idea was good but in real life, you won’t do clay bar work on a ceramic coating without marring so I don’t see the point as all I would then have to do is apply a product like CarPro Essence plus to “mask” the marring and the effect of the coating underneath

The mere presence of a “coating” on a surface (after xx number of months) does not mean the entire vehicle looks great and stain-free. It might already be infested by lots of marring, all types of residual stains and hardwater mark etching that could not be washed away. The vehicle no longer looks nice, although there are some indications of water beading (unrelated to aesthetics).

Using the detail spray just contaminated your whole panel so this test is over. Any detail spray will introduce hydrophobic properties onto the paint. None of the coatings came back at all...period. It was only the result of the detail spray you used when you clayed the panel. Scott don't you know what detail spray does to a finish....makes it hydrophobic. You know now.
