Quick look at what it takes to clean the heat exchanger on a Central Boiler Edge 560 vs a Polar Furnace G2+. The Polar is my personal furnace I have run it for 4 problem free years; I was given the opportunity to run the Central Boiler by a good friend to see what I thought about the unit. I always tell everyone looking at a new boiler purchase to look at the design and materials and this is one of the reasons why, the needs in maintenance between these two boilers is very different. The heat exchanger on the Polar can be cleaned with the turn of the handle (removal and brushing of the heat exchanger tubes is only being done for annual maintenance); the Central Boiler requires disassembly and a good scrape down. It should also be noted the design of the Polar air turbulaters are different than may others on the market. Polars design does a better job of cleaning and creates better efficiency. The ability to remove the turbulaters and brush the heat exchangers is a must for any brand to maintain efficiency of the furnace; if you are looking at a system and this cannot be done I would keep looking.

Great comparison video! There aren't a lot of people running these 2 boilers/furnaces side by side so it's great to see the differences. I'd love to see more.
Great back to back review. To me looks like Polar wins for daily/weekly cleans with the handle, and CB wins for yearly clean out access.

Cleaning the heat exchanger that is very true, both furnaces do require a little more annual maintenance than is fully shown in the video. But that would make another good comparison video!
I just bought a classic edge 560 over a heat master g4000 because of the heat exchanger difference. For me, I felt like scraping the central’s heat exchanger by hand once a week was no more work than having to take the roof off of a heat master, to get the turbulators out, to brush the heat exchanger tubes.

The heat exchanger on the Polar only has to brushed clean at the end of the season otherwise you can just turn the handle on the side. It is around the same amount of work to clean the central boiler weekly as the Polar annually.

@@jorrick66 I don’t think you made a mistake at all, you made a good choice to burn wood in the first place! I ran that CB for around 1/2 the season and it ran good for me, I don’t think you will have any issues with it.

Is it possible to turn the blower all the way up and dump sand into the firebox to "sand the flues" like on a steam locomotive? I'm guessing the air velocity is too low, but I don't know

Heatmaster makes a very nice wood furnace as well, that was my close second.
Each additional 40°F in the flue temperature reduces the efficiency 1%.

Have you ever looked an EPA test report, because that is completely untrue. I would recommend checking a few out they are free and have to be publicly available for any EPA approved furnaces.

I don't think you know what your talking about. On the edge just move the metal piece between the heat exchangers up and down the ash will fall down.

That will not get heat exchanger clean enough to reduce the stack temp. If you have a high stack temp you are blowing BTU’S straight out the chimney and the only way to get the stack temp into a range that is acceptable is to remove the turbulators and scrub.
