Cave Diver low on air finds toxic air pocket deep inside cave

Ойын-сауық

Today we react to one of the worst case scenarios that we've ever heard on Dive Talk.
A cave diver in Spain gets terribly lost, and with almost no air left finds an air pocket with HIGH CO2 level. There is no hope, no ability to track the time that has passed, and the batteries of his light running low, all he has left is his knife and a piece of rope, and he starts to think the unthinkable.
For reference, the air we breathe has a 0.04% CO2 content. The air Xisco was breathing inside the pocket had 5%!

Hey Gus! That's not Spanish but the local language : "Mallorquí" As an Spanish speaking Venezuelan is totally understandable your confusion. I hope they don't give you a hard for this. You are right in that "negada" in Spanish means denied. However in this case means "flooded". Sediments llimosos = Muddy sediments Bocs caiguts = Fallen rocks Zona negada = Flooded area Cova des Xots = Lamb's Cave Espelectemes = stalactites (you sure guessed this one) The yellow area in the drawing represents a calcareous mass Great job guys!!

28:45 mins I LOVE Gus's mindset because it would also be mine... You mean to tell me I've been trapped in a cave for days with a headache and thoughts of death and now BOTH of you are leaving and taking the air with you instead of ONE of you staying to share air? I got a knife and I'm terrified and fighting for my life. ONE of you is STAYING. I don't want to hurt you and I appreciate you for coming, however you aren't leaving me alone.

Yea your right its ridiculous and completley irresponsible. He could have died easily if the cave was smaller. It was only luck since they were so scared to try to save their buddy and waited days!!! for perfect visibility. And then both leave. Its insane. I am blown away that you were able to speak to Xisco! He is an incredible human and I hope he is content with my version of his story. Great content. @divetalk , I would appreciate it next time if you could mention my name at the beginning of the video to give context that another creator made the content. This was my first ever youtube video and I apologize for the sibilance/ editing issues. I bought a new mic so the audio quality will improve in my vids going forward. Xisco inspired me to make many more KZread diving videos, and I could not thank him enough for that. Keep up the great work Gus and Woody.

Think what you guys missed was that when they both got into that air pocket Cisco took out a map or something and showed the other guy that there was a second way out to another cave entrance and the lines should be intact. But the issue was this other exit was so far away that, between the two of them, they only had enough air for one of them to make it. So they chose to let the smaller of the two go.

To watch you react and give commentary on a story only to then contact the subject of that story and hear it in his own words, overcoming the language barrier by translating in the moment, is such a beautiful example of respect, diligence, and global community.

I snorkel, and I love that (he got me into it and it absolutely blew my mind how beautiful even our local pond is), but the idea of being under water with nothing but a mouthpiece to breath through and many feet from the surface freaked me out (cave diving was just like, HA. NO.). Y'all have demystified it so much and made it seem so much less scary and more manageable, that my partner might actually get me as a diving buddy at some point. Thank you!

It is up to you but take proper courses and don't push yourself. Find a good diving teacher that can teach you all he can and one that is actually known and has a good history and reputation to back him up. A lot of accidents and death underwater in cave diving are mostly from people not respecting the dive rules and some are for the fact they try to go down further than they should at their experience level. There's also the risk of equipment failures. You should be informed about the possible risks before choosing it , just like skydiving....Ah and you should see how you react under stress. If you panic and flail around in normal situations then don't even try diving because going haywire and stumbling around without a plan will get you killed underwater while the worst part is that your buddies can't really help you a lot of the times lest they put themselves in danger as well...Not saying it is a death sentence but there are actual risks and not everybody can do it..And a calm head on your shoulders will save your life. Panic and losing sight of the line and kicking up sediments will likely be your doom in complex cave systems.

Thank you Gus for being able to translate. I'm not sure if people realize how difficult it is to have a technical conversation in another language, even if that language is your native tongue. English is my second language, but I speak my native language at the level of a ten or twelve year old. So I can appreciate your ability to get into the specific terminology of diving.

Y'all it has been the coolest thing to have you interview people involved in the stories! I would say the audio was meh, and maybe there is a way to use less of the main video when that happens through the use of editing. I'm thinking you could cut it into the interview somehow, but that is more editing and would mess up the flow of the interview. The interview was great, and flowed really well even with the need to pause and translate. Overall enjoyed the content.

He was at one third air supply when they turned to exit. Apparently they were so into measuring and gathering samples they forgot about the rule of thirds. • @Yggdrasil42

No, he had used one third when they turned. Just as it should be! They got in trouble when the line was broken and had to use another exit, further away. Hence, sending one diver with their combined supply. A team of experienced cave divers like these are would never simply use 2/3rds without anyone speaking up. That's ludicrous.
