Causes of Constant Phlegmy Throat or Throat Mucus

This animation goes over the many reasons for constant throat mucus production that lasts not just for days, but months or even years. Such phlegm production often triggers throat clearing, cough, or just plain hocking up and spitting. Often this issue is incorrectly blamed on post-nasal drainage which only accounts for a small percentage of patients. There are 5 main diagnostic groupings described:
- Esophagus (0:50)
- Nose (1:43)
- Foods (2:12)
- Autoimmune (2:34)
- Neuropathy (2:54).

Fauquier ENT, I believe I've discovered something New. Why am I writing to you, I need your help. I know what's creating this stuff and it's not known by Entomologists, Biologists, nor veterinarians. I can prove these things are entering into our mouths and noses. This will link to other diseases such as respiratory and others. Let me know if you can, or, would like to take a look at what I've discovered. I can explain how I figured it all out. Thanks Docgreen.

@@rachellicee2380 these things are not parasites. They get big, I’ve done enough research to know these things are not known by Entomologists, Biologists, and or Veterinarians. While researching I came across pics of things found in the nasal passages. They don’t know what causes or creates these things. I know what does, if I’m right, I knows these things can create a liquid, that liquid can and does turn into Gel like substance. Each one starts out with a black speck in it. They create some kind of cocoon looking things, and inside the cocoon is something that appears dark colored, they eat fabric flesh and I’ve found these things in colon cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, nose cancer on the outside makes sense along with skin cancer. Im almost positive that these things are what’s creating cancer. All cancers except man made cancers.

Hi I think the answer to this problem is a lot more simple than we think. I’ve had this problem for years but 8 weeks ago I started intermittent fasting, cutting out full cream milk , bread, SUGAR, fizzy drinks. Grains , after 8 weeks my plegmy throat has virtually disappeared. I think it’s mainly a dairy caused problem. This is my experience, which is easier to try rather than all the medical tests.

I will try to find out if grains cause my problem too. I eat a lot of bread. Probably had phlegm in my throat for the last ten years. Glad to see that people are figuring out the reason.

I cannot tell you what hope it gives me to stumble across your video today! All this info in one place is so valuable. I’ve been dealing with this miserable problem for about 6 years I think (I’ve lost count it’s been so long). I’ve seen all the specialists you mention in the video (but have not had all the testing, which I don’t know why they didn’t do that) and I feel like I’ve tried everything. I have figured out myself that I have MANY different issues going on that complicate this for me, plus a serious and severe viral illness that hit me two years in a row that kicked it all off (both times the illness hit were in the Spring, in 2015 and 2016, and for a full 4 weeks each time). I still have hope I’ll figure this out and after watching this video, I’m even more encouraged to keep going until I find what works for me. Thank you!

You have to pay attention to what makes it worse. I noticed that mine got worse when I ate more sugary foods and drank milk. So my heart doctor told me to go on a strict protein diet for three days and then start adding in foods and see what aggravate my condition. I might still have other things to avoid but I know sugar and milk for sure. I can't tell you how great it feels when I don't have phlegm in my throat all of the time and when I do I can cough it out now where I couldn't before.

I started a keto diet a year ago eliminating sugar, grains and dairy for various reasons. The 'gagging' mucous in my throat was eliminated almost immediately. I have recently reintroduced a very minimal amount of grain ie carbohydrate into my 2 meals a day plan and climb the nearby hill regularly.... this keeps the small amount of mucous under control. My realisation is that the mucous production is caused largely by the carbohydrate in grains and possibly a lactose intolerance due to the numerous chemicals being sprayed onto soil and plants.

Amen." - Then after that make a hot cup, and I mean HOT, of water and dip a pepper tea bag in it, maybe two. Make sure tea bag is giving out its stuff good and bend down and smell too of cup you should smell peppermint. Then add either green tea bag for a little bit and/or echinacea and spread their stuff out a little but not as much as peppermint. Then dash of cinnamon. Dash of ginger. Then add moderate to good size honey and stir good. When you take your first good sip make sure to smell really good in each nostril first at top of cup.

Hanna, have you been getting migraines, or are you still dealing with the same symptoms? If so, please, please, please read my posts by docgreen. This stuff is being missed, some doctors are not listening to the patient. I can prove what I'm saying. I need some help with the ENT's, getting one to sit down and look at what I've discovered. I'm betting that if I'm right there's a lot of us having the same type symptoms being blown off. If you get this, please write back. I can ask some questions about symptoms, and show you some things that people are ignoring. Probably because they're taking meds. I thought for over 5 years it was the pain meds causing all these things. For instance, when you cough stuff up, or gag, is it always early morning or does it start about 4:30pm and stop around 4:30am? Have you been diagnosed for any respiratory issues since you started noticing stuff? Do you throw up ever early mornings, and no, I'm not talking about morning sickness with pregnant women. Do you experience what we call brain fog? Something else to think about, does your nose ever itch really bad? Has anyone ever diagnosed you with Asthma? Have you notice white flakes or black specks in your nose. I won't go into much more detail, but think about when you have to blow your nose, or have a nose that a lot of liquid comes out? Something else I'd like to ask, do you live in a place that has carpeting in. If so, how old is the carpeting or when's the last time it was new and installed? I'm betting, that a lot of these things will ring true. Something else, inner ear infections, or eye problems? Last one I'll ask for now, do you ever get like a stinging sensation in or around the lower legs and feet, if so please write me back.

I deal with sinus issues (I have a deviated septum), allergies and food sensitivities. I have noticed that if I stop eating by 8pm and fast for 14 hours till the next morning, while wearing a nose appliance to prevent snoring, my symptoms are much reduced. I also make sure to use a Flonase spray before bed. For me it's worse after eating some foods and when I would wake up from snoring. For me the key is to fix the snoring to reduce the issue (along with allergy maintenance). Traditional Teas - Throat Coat provides temporary relief

I have bad allergies to pollen, trees, grass and dust, and I have seen a couple of allergists. Just like in the video where the listed about six specialist who you might need to see in order to determine the cause. Imagine what that would cost. I have insurance, but I still have to pay a copay and my insurance pays the rest. However, I don't like that either because in order to offset higher and more frequent copays, they just raise the insurance premiums.

@Fauquier ENT I have nasal polyps (most removed with surgery 2 years ago) and usually have overnight a build up of large amounts of nasal mucous in the morning. I also usually have a cough of flem at night, not much really just annoying. Symbicort gets rid of the cough. I was taking 5mg of prednisone to try to keep my sense of smell however I lost it just before this Xmas. I got covid mid January and about 1 week later my sense of smell came back. remember it was gone before I had covid. I also didn't really have any build up of nasal mucous once I had covid. About one month after I initially had covid my large build up of mucous overnight has returned however I still have my sense of smell right now. The cough at night has not returned (yet). Any idea what immune response covid triggered in my body to suppress my polyps and cough? I saw my ENT about 3 weeks after I got covid and shared this with him and he had zero to offer other than saying he saw no polyps. Thoughts

Another reason for drainage in the throat is due to dental infection from a tooth on the upper set. If it penetrates into the nasal cavity the mucus is usually thinner than with sinus infection and has more odor. The danger, if allowed to remain, is due to it's location in proximity to the brain. No one wants a brain infection which is difficult to heal.

Note to viewers: Eosinophilic esophagitis is often caused by food allergies such as our friend gluten (my trigger.) The white blood cells immediately mass in the esophagus when the body detects an allergen and tries to kill it by releasing toxins that result in inflammation/irritation of the throat and phlegm forms to protect the eshphagus. It only take me 2 swallows of something containing gluten to trigger a reaction. By the 2nd swallow I start coughing and phlegm formation. Since I live with this (took me a long time to figure it out - doctors didn't), I believe it's one of the more common causes. Just a tip.

It's been hard for me. I am suffering with this for years now. I thought I had TB, but the tests are always negative. It's stopping from doing everything to achieve my dreams. I am a graduate of professional education and a board passer, so I am supposed to be a teacher now. However, going to work and doing stressful and heavy things always cause me to have severe cough for months. It's stressing me out, especially when I'm at work, my colleagues might be discusted and will keep distance at me. Imagine me teaching in front of the children while coughing nonstop. Now I'm at home having no work at all, because I'm afraid that this might be communicable, and also it makes me so uncomfortable. It seems no hope of healing. I wish I could meet some specialist who will help me overcome this (I don't even know what my illness is). If only my family is rich, I would do everything just to get proper medication. My family is poor, I'm the 3rd daughter but I am the only one who was able to finish my study. I still have 4 younger siblings. I feel so useless and worthless because I am unable to support them due to this condition. Help me. 😭

My mother and sister also had and have this problem, like me. It’s like a post nasal drip. It runs down from my sinuses, down the back of my throat to my upper chest during the night and I wake up either with a dry cough (which fast becomes a phlegm cough). Every time I cough and clear it, it comes back right away. The phlegm is thick but clear so not an infection. I do keep clearing my throat especially if I talk a lot. The Dr has prescribed a nasal spray that’s used for hay fever plus an anti gastric pill as I suffer from acid reflux. Both have helped a lot.

I have this too and I have horrible acid reflux. I have a theory that when the acid is backing up into my esophagus, my body is over reacting and trying to protect my throat and bronchial tubes by producing copius amounts of phlegm. I have an important tip for all people in this section. Clearing the throat by coughing is a highly invasive and wrong method. It causes a wound on the vocal cords, and the body secrets more mucus to cover that wound as a natural ointment. If you cough again you will end up having more and more mucus, which turns to phlegm as it thickens. So if the phlegm in your throat is too much so that can't manage to talk through it, and your voice is sounding too quavered to sustain, then clear your throat by the good old "AhrrmArrm, AhrrmAhrrm" kind of method.(force a blast of air through restricted vocal cords with pauses in the middle.) Increase the force of the air and lengthen the duration of the "AhhmArrrrr....m, AhrrmAhrrm" (the point at which I have shown dotted line. Also you can do a continuous triple or quadruple clearing if required like:(AhrrmAhr....rm, AhrrmAhrr...m,AhrrmAhrrm) If clogging is too much. Sometimes, it may require multiple attempts, but it gets the work done without long term aggravation. Sometimes first few attempts may aggravate the quaver in your voice. But ultimately it's much much better for your healt compared to coughing. Coughing causes extensive hair loss as the phlegm in your lungs gets absorbed in your blood and then erupts on your scalp as oily dandruff. It causes asthama as your vocal cords loose thier natural elasticity. It may make your voice hoarse permenently. It also causes hernia. So quit the coughing habit as soon as possible.

Sometimes, it gets bad to the point where I feel like I'm going to vomit. This is especially problematic when a coughing fit happens while I'm out in public, and I'm trying desperately to clear my throat without the worst-case scenario happens. I'm also blowing my nose and getting congested all the time, which prompts me to go through boxes of tissues and bottles of Afrin nasal spray like there's no tomorrow.

I had a chesty, phlegmy cough for NINE YEARS - but I also have asthma. So every time I went to the doctor about it, they assumed it was related to my asthma; I had my inhalers switched several times, was put on antihistamine tablets, put on nasal sprays, taken off nasal sprays... it was only after I switched to a private doctor and they did a full barrage of tests that they discovered I had a 5cm hiatus hernia, which was causing persistent oesophagitis. I now have to have surgery at some point to repair the hernia. (They tried to do a manometry on me at one stage, as part of determining the nature of the hernia, but they couldn't get the tube down my nasal passages, so it's possible i may also have the second problem with my nose as well. I wonder if that could be related to the presecribed nasal sprays that I didn't really need for years?)

Yes, it's great that these doctors place you on steroid based inhalers and leave it up to YOU the patient to figure out WHY you have a new set of problems such as throat flem and a lowered immune system which makes getting pneumonia more likley. You must have gone to the same doctor I did who shrugged his shoulders at me when I complained about my increased pneumonia. All he said was, "Well, what are you going to do. Nothing is perfect." I fired him then threw away the steroid treatments, went back to my rescue inhaler which I've used without issues for 60 years and then focused on getting my immune system back in shape. (I was having pneumonia several times a year) It's my conclusion that the inhaled steroid almost killed me by dangeriously lowering my immune system. My last pneumonia 4 years ago was severe. Nothing since then. I learned that MOST of my asthma issues were food related. Also, for me, coffee, chocolate and bromalean supplements help a lot. I also inhale organic eucalyptus drops and even wet the inside of my nose with them throughout the day. It clears the sinuses pretty darn quick and reduces the heavy flem in my throat. It's the thick mucus that gets into my chest leading to asthma, in my opinion. NONE of these treatments are a "cure all" for asthma but then, NONE of these doctors have a cure all either and their prescribed meds cause too many side effects that are worse than the asthma itself. But the asthma industry is a lucrative industry to get into, they collect millions of dollars of revenue each year, while offering no new more effective treatments that are safe. My advice it to embrace and work with mother nature to identify triggers and try natural based remedies. There are some doctors online who focus specifically on natural based remedies. Watch their video's! For me, such remedies reduced my asthma by 50% thus reducing the need for my rescue inhalor. I'm generally not happy with the gready modern medicine system we have and their bias toward only laboratory based remedies that cause more problems then they supposedly fix. I'm not happy with doctors who don't spell out the HUGE risks of the chemical based treatments they prescribe. Treatments that reduce your immune system making you more susceptable to pneumonia and possible death is unexceptable! But doctors are doing this every day! The entire health industry needs a major overhaul on ethics and we need more studies on natural based remedies, but sadly it won't happen in my lifetime. I feel your frustration!!!

@@RickPaquin yes, you are so correct. Keep in mind, I’m still trying to understand things, I believe there may be a link to the breakdown of carpet with some of these things. If I’m right and the thing I discovered eats the carpet fibers, ends up in our our respiratory tract hasn’t ever been studied, there may be a link to asthma, Cystic Fibrosis. I know for a fact these things eat cotton and flesh. I can show it, and prove it now. You walk into a dermatologist, and they think we’re crazy. I’m not crazy, what’s being missed is that whatever these things are love the dark. I’m questioning all these specialists that see patients during the day. If they think there’s nothing that moves around at night, they’re wrong. Think about CPAP machine’s used at night, if I’m right the breathing and the syncopal breathing may be caused by these things. See it’s not just that I’ve found these things in my phlegm and the stuff I throw up. Always early am before dark, this is a question that should be asked to everyone. Because we’re told it’s just gastric juices and enzymes from the stomach to break down food. I’m betting I have questions if asked, will she’d light on the real causes of these things. I’m not saying this because I don’t know, I’m saying all these things because I know what’s creating these symptoms and signs, and it’s not our body doing or making these symptoms and things our bodies are doing. It’s 2ndary effects caused my something that’s invaded our body that hates light. These are real things, they really are there! Think about CPAP, is it the fact it’s help us breathe, or is it possible the mask is helping keep these things out of our nose and mouths and respiratory tract? I can show you how these things, when you look at images from doctors, I can show you they’re tied together. Impetigo, things found in the nasal passages, stuff found in phlegm, even phlegm that people throw up, and cough up. I bet if you ask people, within the phlegm they’ll find black specks, things that look like bubbles, but they’re not bubbles, they’re organisms that make phlegm look there’s lots of bubbles. I wish you could see what I can prove. It’s crazy, for instance, I can show you that these same things link to flesh eating bacteria, MRSA, and Necrotizing Fascitis. This is how it all started for me. I woke up with pain in my left shoulder. It felt like someone used a baseball bat on my shoulder. What time did this happen 3:30am. I figured out later that whatever these things are, they need to breathe. I’m not just saying this, I’ve been taking pics and samples of everything since that morning. I can show what’s being missed. Think about this, could it be possible that diabetic ulcers and bed sores are being created by these same things. How do you diagnose diabetic ulcers? It’s the stadium affect, it starts with a small hole and keeps getting bigger, eventually there’s no flesh and it’s a gaping hole. You need to see some off my pics of these same things on my thumb. I can show you what’s being missed. Thank you.

Sounds like what I've been suffering with for the last year. I was furloughed from my job for the last two months, because of the covid-19 scare, and noticed that I didn't have the problem as much. I went back to work last week and noticed it's back, plus the weather is FINALLY warmer now at the end of June. It might be pollen. Also, my office is in the basement of the building in which I work, and I am now concerned about mold - which was mentioned in one of the posts below with a reference to Dr Dennis and chronic sinusitis and other chronic illinesses. The problem might be environmental in some cases. In any case, I was surprised at how many others suffer from this. I am not alone!

There is also constant clearing of the back of the throat as one of the tics in Tourette’s Syndrome. One of my 3 sons has it. He was checked for it by a Pediatric Allergist at 10 years old. The doctor said he wasn’t getting enough attention. We didn’t yet know there was Tourette’s in the family. At 39, he still has it. Our youngest had the same thing as a tic in Grade 1. His desk was put outside the door of the classroom because his constant clearing of his throat was a distraction to the classroom. He was the one by whom we discovered Tourette’s Syndrome in the family. Very severe case.

I don't trust doctors for many reasons I feel like crap most of the time, right now it's 2 Am and I have heart burn and a lump of mucus in my throat that I try to force swallow but there's a constant draining down my throat like a faucet that just won't shut off. This condition is so frustrating and I feel for anyone that is in the same boat as me. If I go to a doctor they just look at me like I'm nuts, there basically useless and give me the run around and after spending hundreds nothing works. I've kind of learned to live with it but wish it would just go away. Hope you get some relieve and just know that your not alone. ✌🤗

My husband & I are in our 70's, have lived in the oil fields of west Texas all our lives. Other than usual problems with colds, some sinus & allergy problems, we have not had a great deal of sickness. Ten years ago we moved to a nearby small town to retire, bought a new home & settled in. The fracking boom was just hitting the area, lots of traffic & activity, the worst of which was a giant truck stop which was built right behind our neighborhood, with only their 8ft fence & an alley between our property & the service station, with parking for oil field trucks of all types abutting our alleyway. These monsters run constantly while parked, drivers sleeping in the cabovers. The kinds of pollution exceeds the exhaust, as there are many types of chemicals & other products used in the production of oil by fracking; also many of these trucks have arrived from far away & share pollens, etc. which we are not accustomed to inhaling. Anyhow, the upshot of all this is a real exacerbation of allergies, especially nasal & throat. Constant mucus production in the nose & throat, my head stops up every evening so we both must take decongestants that have to be signed for at the drugstore, etc. Y'all might want to check out your environment for pollution sources that are not necessary from mother nature. We're stuck with our "next-door" problem, but at least we know what causes it....

I have had a big problem with this thing, for years, and found something that helped. I realized I was a mouth breather That is, I wasn't using my nose to breathe, I was doing almost all my breathing through my mouth. Breathing through the nose is natural, and will cause the sinuses to drain naturally. Breathing through the mouth effectively short-circuits the natural respiratory process of sinus draining and the result is that mucus backs up in the throat. If you have this annoying mucus in the throat problem, try shutting your lips together and forcing yourself to breathe steadily and slowly through your nose 25x You may find what I found: First, that you were a mouth breather without being aware of it. Second, with even a short time of practicing just breathing through your nose, you'll feel your sinuses naturally clearing themselves When a build-up of mucus occurs you can simply swallow what's there without having to strain to clear your throat. In any case, the problem will be far less than it was. Final note: I've been to the doctors about the problem (twice) and have tried all kinds of remedies for a problem that was as chronic as most people in this form. I'm not claiming to be an expert or to have a solution for everyone, but I"m just saying what worked for me. In any case, I'm not one of these people who typically haunt forums like this who have no personal experience with the specific health problem but who give out free advice.

My problem exactly. I'm on antihystamine all the time. Allegra. I supplement with ibuprofen to sleep. My gp said it's allergies. He sent me to an ear nose throat specialist. It took six months to see him..partially on the phone. had a cursory look, said yes, your sinuses are inflamed and gave me nose spray and cleaning stuff. No effect, actually worse. Then he gave a prescription nose spray. That all took about five months. No effect. Then he sent me to an allergist. There was a two year wait to get to see her. I'm about to talk to her after some bloodwork she ordered. In the meantime, I went to naturopath specializing in allergies. He was helpful. Got me on Montelukast and another spray to treat the other possible cause besides allergies..forgot the name, but it is the vid. That had very little effect if any. He tested for mould and dust mites, and gave some drops. My stomach rebelled. Instant pain. He diluted the drop solution and it was bearable. Meanwhile, I wait and hork.

Yeah thanks for people helping humanity; Nobody seems to want to answer any of us ? Usually occurs while sleeping , yes? Runny nose, some coughing and I still ain't getting the shot! Lucky enough to be quarantined and not going out looking for trouble ! But I don't want to be shoved into a convalescent home just because of my age and my cold symptom! I'm told I'm a singer, and OLIVE OIL works to soften the throat "before" singing. Where's the MD behind this video ? shoudn't HE be answering some of these ? Sometimes I think the ANSWER is, watch your diet , and SPIT THAT SUCKER out and stop worrying Buy lots of paper towel, Kleenex wont' do it.! Immune boosters are Bromaline and N-Acetyl Cysteine says UK MD Campbell, Medcram, and Peak Prosperity Md. Christ Martinson. Forget Falsie-he offers us nothing. Usually copper pill works well for me. The issue with that is it can lower blood sugar and cause upset stomach. I take with food.

I have been suffering with a chronic constant croupy mucus cough for several years. I have asthma and rhinitis and possibly upper airway reflux. It’s exhausting and I’ve lost weigh. Tests have been done with zero relief. Any suggestions?
