You can have your preference but I prefer Maxwell. Maxwell changes the POV to a guy's view. He conveys regret, introspection, and a willingness to change. Objectively though Maxwell's version is more difficult. His smooth falsetto's are harder to do. I do like Kate's version but objectively from a musicality standpoint Maxwell's is better.

@@aaronmontgomery2055 That's exactly what Kate is doing. She sings this from the man's perspective as well. She's done it on many occasions. On "Pull Out The Pin" she's a North Vietnamese soldier tracking his target, an American GI. On "Ran Tan Waltz" she's a cuckolded man. She empathises with just about anyone and anything. On "Breathing" she's an unborn foetus.

I agree! It is still my favorite album. I like the strong spirituality in it. She knew in her teens what took me decades to grasp. It's deep stuff. Moving is my favorite. The Them Heavy People video cracks me up since I deal with a lot of 'heavy' people. I'm still in discovery mode, but Hello Earth and This Woman's work are also faves. I was a teen when Running...came out, but her other work didn't get air time in the US. When this pandemic is over, I'm finding a Most Wuthering Heights Day Flash Mob to join!

This song was written for the film "She's Having a Baby", and it's about a very specific situation - an expectant father sitting in the waiting room while his wife is giving birth. In the film, it plays after the birth takes a dangerous turn and the mother's life is in danger. He's sitting there unable to do anything, thinking about all the great things he never really appreciated about his marriage. It's done so effectively that I start crying just hearing the song. Man, I'm crying now! :)

@@warrenbridges1891 and moods. Every album has its own personality. In the 80s I didn’t have cable or satellite TV, I just didn’t watch TV often enough after leaving home to want to pay for it. As a result, I didn’t see things like MTV or VH1 very much unless I was at someone else’s house. But I will say I did really like the artwork on her album covers. But over the course of her album releases I mainly just heard her songs. And I’m glad because her songs often have that amazing ability to touch me at an emotional and subliminal level of my own. I’ll see the videos on KZread and often I find myself not that interested in watching what she came up with to accompany her music. There are a few exceptions, like Wow. But for the most part, the music, the images and feelings they evoke are more than enough for me. For instance, Blow Away when I heard it called up memories from when I was around six and the feelings I had then when I was that age. I don’t know why. Moments of Pleasure leave me with a more valedictory sense of looking back over my life with a sad mellow feeling of nostalgia.

With all due respect to your valid opinion, I was actually surprised at myself for how much I Disliked Maxwell's interpretation. After typing what I just wrote above I went back and Truly watched and paid attention to his version of her song. First: I have to say that man has a set of pipes on him! What talent!! I think what turned me off about him is that he deviated from the original too much, and with that he left out a lot of key emotion. I say this as someone who found this song as a 16 yr old back in 1988, which was an emotional period in my life and this song had a massive impact. Looking at it again with an objective heart today, I will say that it is good- but to truly experience the true depth of the soul of the song, Kate's version is exactly the way it was intended. I've heard many other attempts however, and I agree that his is the best of the covers.

@@combatgirl38 I much prefer Maxwell's version. I love the changes as Kate's version doesn't come from a guy's POV to me. Specifically how maxwell's changes at the end express the male POV in desperate to helpless to a willingness to change and do. Objectively the last minute of Maxwell's version is better in terms of musicality. I believe the reason is one is meant for a movie (hence the drop and vocal's not being a prevalent) and I do like it but objectively it could do with changes. I do prefer kate as an artist though so its tough.

Kate Bush is in a league of her own. There is literally nobody like her. She blazes her own unique trail. Her songwriting and music follow no trends or fashions. She just writes what she feels and that is what makes her a great artist. She writes the music, the lyrics, she is and excellent dancer (or at least she used to in dance in her videos) She is a complete artistic soul, much like the late, great David Bowie.

Actually when you watch "This woman's work" music video Kate is with her loved one having dinner and all of a sudden she collapses, then they are in the hospital and she seems to be very ill "touch and go" for a bit and she comes outside her body and is observing and watching her loved one "heartbreak" thinking he is losing her. She is saying the words in this song to him as she follows him around and in the waiting room. Then he gets the news she is going to make it. This is Kate's "Original song" she wrote and sang it...no Kate never gets much credit or praise for anything in the "Pop world" but to most of us that love Kate we KNOW her true talent, in singing, writing, producing, dancing and original music video's..

This is my first time hearing Kate Bush too. Now I'm hooked. I heard it also from Maxwell and mainly just the hook at the beginning of the song. Was great to go on this discovery journey with you J; your responses genuinely mirrored my own.

Well that's partly because Kate never had a US breakthrough and eventually the US got Tori Amos who . . . well . . . mimicked Kate bush's vocals semi-often and replicated dozens of specific photos in similar clothing, similar poses, doing similar things in similar places. . . So Tori kind of filled the US's slot for an unusual female artist at the time also she was super British

@@iTeacupPanda Tori Amos arrived almost 15 years later, so she also had the kindness of an era that accepted creative, independent female artists who didn't have to apologize for being women or work and create under the shadow of a male 'partner' so that pop music fans would listen. But this was EXACTLY what the mid and late 70s were like. Virtually every female artist had to collaborate with men. ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, The Carpenters, Sonny and Cher, Captain and Tenille, Donny and Marie, Ike and Tina..the list goes on... North Americans just didn't take women seriously as songwriters back then. Joni Mitchell and Carol King stood alone.

I personally fell in love with his song when I first heard this song in the 80’s, in the UK she was a true star then, this womans voice was a force of nature, she was ahead of her time, to say she came out in the late 70’s you would loved it or hated it, but it stood the test of time, it’s been covered by a number of artists, maxwell being one of them and I liked his version as well by Kate Bush will all ways be my go to artist, 👏👏🙏🏼🙌🙌👍👍❤️❤️

J, Kate wrote and recorded song in 1988, used in a movie She's Having a Baby (1988). Released as a single 1989. She only had 4 singles charted in the US. "Running Up That Hill" reached #30. She did much better in the UK, Australia, and a few other countries.
