Kate Bush by a county mile. She wrote, produced it and directed the video. Always brings a tear to my eye.
Look, Maxwell's great and all, but Kate's in a completely different category. I remember an anecdote from Elton John. He threw a party and everyone was there, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and all the big people of the time. KAte had been out of the public eye for a few years and when she walked in, it's like nobody else was even in the room. The cream of the cream of the musical world only wanted to talk to her. Kate is one of my personal heros.

She's the queen. A true uncompromising artist. Visionary. Unique. Her videos are works of art. Some of her songs tear at your soul. They are both simple and complex at the same time. Nothing she does has a "sellout" vibe. Nothing she does is typical or predictable. She insisted that "Wuthering Heights" to be her first single, even though it's a very odd song in many ways. She was right. She's a legend.

Kate Bush actually wrote this song specifically to coincide with the montage in "She's Having a Baby". It's truly one of the most heart-wrenching scenes I've ever seen in any movie. @@markjohnson4217 I agree. When I was younger the fun question was always: Desert Island Pick - "The Dreaming" OR "Hounds of Love"? "The Dreaming" usually won out in the end. It's an amazing collection and stylistically varied, but harder for first timers. Also: Enter the Fairlite, one of the Godfathers of sampling keyboards. You can tell that Kate LOVED working with that system (with those 8-inch floppy-disks; took FOREVER to load a file), kind of like Peter Gabriel on "Security".
@markjohnson4217

@@-Cinderman it's true, the seven pieces are separate, but I HIGHLY recommend the MrMarrs treatment, he also includes a stunning introduction section with a poetic Excerpt from "'Arthur". The really sounds like John Carder Bush, her brother..perhaps this was considered for the album but was omitted for some reason..anyway, The MrMarrs versions are absolutely gorgeous visual compliments to her sound and they seem to flow into one another Very well, if a commercial pops up, it really sucks, so try and disable the ADS.. .
Prepare to cry...and Kate wins every time. All the time.

Kate Bush made her first appearance on American TV on Saturday Night Live on December 9, 1978. Honestly, at the time in 1978, Americans weren't ready - or sophisticated enough - for theatrical rock/pop songs like this. I was in college and remember some frat guys laughing at her tv appearances. Rolling the Ball was sort of, "What are we seeing here?" We thought she was in her 30 or 40s (not 19yo) and from theater or opera. There wasn't any marketing for her or her albums, nothing on radio, so we had no idea who she was. I'm so so SO sorry but I am trying to explain why she never really "crossed over" where I was in Calif. during those years of 1978 thru the 80s. Even her song, Running up that Hill I'm ashamed that I thought it was a Madonna song. But blame the way we heard music which was only on radio, I mean before MTV dominated music.
The artistry, the ethereal quality, the depth but somehow remaining so light.... Yeah Kate Bush wins this one.

Kate’s all day long, Maxwell also great singer but Kate has so much authenticity I just feel it more when she sings it. IMHO
Having read down the comments, I agree with them about Kate. She has been my favourate artist for about 35 years now, nobody comes close. The only thing I have'nt seen commented on is she writes the lyrics and the music, she plays instruments, she choreographs but also she choreographs bearing in mind the impact it has on her voice, she is a genius, and her lyrics have onion layers that you can't understand until you study them, very deep and important themes that are ageless. That's why she hasn't faded with time.
