I happened to be in Hollywood on vacation while this video was being filmed. I found it on a daily list of filming sights, and headed right over. I remember the UFO scenes very clearly...filmed exactly as you can imagine...a long pole, 5 feet of string and someone off to the left spinning the flying saucer before it got hoisted in front of the band. Tanya was not on set at that time, but the band was in fine form and into their music as this video reveals very nicely. Anyone could have walked in there as a huge garage door was wide open exposing the scene you see in the video, you only had to follow your ears. I remember getting asked if I was with the catering. Nope! I hung around trying to get a moment to thank Dave Hawes (bassist) for sending me one of their 12" eps just for writing to the band. Sadly, I missed that chance due to the band remaining on set filming and my limited time frame that day. Twenty-five years later I can only hope he reads this knowing the attempt was made and how grateful I still am for having received it with his autograph. Yes, I still treasure it, and his letter, to this day. He also answered my question about how the image for the front cover for Ferment was captured. I don't think very many bands then or today would give this much consideration to a lone fan an ocean away. Awesome sneak peak at this criminally underrated band documenting another gem in their brilliant set list!

I just transferred on my computer 13 hours of KWOD 106.5 Sacramento tapes that I've recorded in August 1997. Then I have lots to transfer from KOME 98.5 San Francisco/San Jose, Live 105 KITS San Francisco all from 1995 and 1997, only alternative format at that time. This very song appears on my KOME 98.5 recordings too, where I discovered it at that very time in 1995...

@The Lawnmower Ix. 091 I'd like a link to this book you're talking about. As far as music "tanking" after the 90's I say you don't listen to enough rock & roll. Music is constantly evolving. Probably a lot of people my age (64) who grew up listening to the Beatles and other bands like I did in the 60's don't like today's music. Majority of them are stuck on 70/80s music. I think people in general get stuck on music from when they were teenagers to late 20s. Then they all say "music sucks since the 80s" (insert the decade after YOUR music) I haven't stopped listening. Plenty of stuff I don't like but plenty of stuff I love too. Don't miss out & become an old fart.

I'm with you there Kev, huge Tanya donelly fan here as well. Love her songwriting and her unique voice, though her vocals evolved into a more extreme version of her trademark syrupy sweet girlish chirp around the time she recorded her second solo album. Some folks criticized that but I'm always going to be mesmerized by her voice and her guitar. I'd buy a record of Tanya farting on a snare drum if she put one out.

I wish I'd been able to catch her live with one of the acts she was playing in during the early days. The RI-MA shows early on must have been pretty great. Her vocals in this song are fantastic, and whoever did her hair and makeup for this video really nailed it for the lighting that was used.

@@ColorsBright Agree. Why they ended up with a version on the album that only had Tanya doing backup on the choruses is still a mystery to me. Tanya OWNED this song, no question about it. I've heard different explanations over the years that center around Tanya's contribution being replaced with Rob's vocals because Belly's second album King did not meet the labels sales expectations so the label presumed that her performance would drag them down. Don't know how true that is but it seems like the sort of thing label execs would do in those days

@@scottjhnsn Yup... That's for sure! As far as "hot" check out the Belly video for "Slow Dog". Between her hair, make-up and possibly a bit of weight loss from her earlier years in Throwing Muses, she was about as gorgeous as you could ask for a woman to be.

This is actually a horrible song. But it’s always stuck in my head.

Horrible in terms of sad and hopeless lyrics?

Smacked up again behind the door Begging please give me some more A vein that's open for the day Feel the pulse beneath the skin And smiling as it all begins Oh where have you been? Judy's staring at the sun Judy's staring at the sun Judy's fantasy has come So amplify this little one She;s a volume freak She hears as much as she can see And what she sees she can't believe It's just what Judy needs a moment of release To give her peace peace peace Judy's starting at the sun Judy's day passed out of sight Judy will be suffering tonight She's suffering She passed by and said good-bye to him And in a rare and lucid state She said my days are unoriginal I wanna fade fade fade She's suffering Judy's staring at the sun Judy's day passed out of sight Judy will be suffering tonight
