Great year. Pretty sure Jagged Little Pill came out then. Perhaps Garbage too??
I happened to be in Hollywood on vacation while this video was being filmed. I found it on a daily list of filming sights, and headed right over. I remember the UFO scenes very clearly...filmed exactly as you can imagine...a long pole, 5 feet of string and someone off to the left spinning the flying saucer before it got hoisted in front of the band. Tanya was not on set at that time, but the band was in fine form and into their music as this video reveals very nicely. Anyone could have walked in there as a huge garage door was wide open exposing the scene you see in the video, you only had to follow your ears. I remember getting asked if I was with the catering. Nope! I hung around trying to get a moment to thank Dave Hawes (bassist) for sending me one of their 12" eps just for writing to the band. Sadly, I missed that chance due to the band remaining on set filming and my limited time frame that day. Twenty-five years later I can only hope he reads this knowing the attempt was made and how grateful I still am for having received it with his autograph. Yes, I still treasure it, and his letter, to this day. He also answered my question about how the image for the front cover for Ferment was captured. I don't think very many bands then or today would give this much consideration to a lone fan an ocean away. Awesome sneak peak at this criminally underrated band documenting another gem in their brilliant set list!

Please tell us how he said Ferment’s cover image was created. I’m an artist who has been wondering for 25 years, and it’s my #2 favorite album of all time, after Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation. (Which has an iconic cover by Gerhard Richter.)

I just transferred on my computer 13 hours of KWOD 106.5 Sacramento tapes that I've recorded in August 1997. Then I have lots to transfer from KOME 98.5 San Francisco/San Jose, Live 105 KITS San Francisco all from 1995 and 1997, only alternative format at that time. This very song appears on my KOME 98.5 recordings too, where I discovered it at that very time in 1995...

I'm a child of the 70s but the 90s were my favorite time for music and Catherine Wheel was at the top of my list.
It's arty but not pretentious, emotional but not histrionic. I love Catherine Wheel.

@The Lawnmower Ix. 091 I'd like a link to this book you're talking about. As far as music "tanking" after the 90's I say you don't listen to enough rock & roll. Music is constantly evolving. Probably a lot of people my age (64) who grew up listening to the Beatles and other bands like I did in the 60's don't like today's music. Majority of them are stuck on 70/80s music. I think people in general get stuck on music from when they were teenagers to late 20s. Then they all say "music sucks since the 80s" (insert the decade after YOUR music) I haven't stopped listening. Plenty of stuff I don't like but plenty of stuff I love too. Don't miss out & become an old fart.

Tanya makes the song all the more glorious ❤️😻
Saw CW and Belly co-headline show at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids, MI in...'94?? and when Tanya came out to perform Judy with CW it was magic. To this day one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Ah... That explains, or could explain why Tanya in a duet with CW. Or perhaps she had a "thing" with Rob. Either way, her vocals really make the song. Haunting and sad. Her self admitted drug abuse might have added that edge to it.

It gives me a big sad that this style of music has disappeared..I was a teenager in the 90's and alternative music was a revelation to me.. though I progressed to metal, alternative forever holds a special place in my heart, because it represents my youth..

I'm with you there Kev, huge Tanya donelly fan here as well. Love her songwriting and her unique voice, though her vocals evolved into a more extreme version of her trademark syrupy sweet girlish chirp around the time she recorded her second solo album. Some folks criticized that but I'm always going to be mesmerized by her voice and her guitar. I'd buy a record of Tanya farting on a snare drum if she put one out.

@@imvandenh I agree... I didn't really appreciate her work when she was doing Muses and Belly, but in the last year or so I really enjoy her music. I wish I'd been able to catch her live with one of the acts she was playing in during the early days. The RI-MA shows early on must have been pretty great. Her vocals in this song are fantastic, and whoever did her hair and makeup for this video really nailed it for the lighting that was used.
My favorite duet ever. This song, man. Remember this video from MTV - 120 Minutes- I believe -- STILL sounds great. CW is so killer. And with Tanya!
This should have been an alt-rock hit, especially when we had to listen to Bush. CW was such an under-appreciated band.

This is the song that got me into Catherine Wheel.
The vastly superior version of this song. Fact.
I will never forget where I was when I first heard this song ! Love love love !
The way she sings "peace, peace, peace..." is amazing. It really fits the song's context.
Times have been so tough, we've fallen back as a civilization for the past 20 years. The '90s looks like a hopeful future for us. Please God, let me experience another time as good as the '90s in my lifetime, and let my new family experience them with me.
Catherine Wheel you are still so loved
Thanks for keeping the best band in history alive, Lewis!
Tanya singing the second verse version! (The radio version, and apparently the video version!). All the feels…
I don't know why I love this song so much. I've never used drugs intravenously. But I understand the principle of many different addictions
The harmonies in the song: mesmerizing 😌
Yes! The version where Tanya gets a verse.

One of my favorite songs of all time, and the video is superb
i'd been searching out for this song forever and this version! i couldn't remember the name but i really loved Tanya's vocals. it's very melancholic and there's a mournful dissonance in the lyrics that make me attracted to this song. there's an abstract sadness about the title.

@imvandenh

@@ColorsBright Agree. Why they ended up with a version on the album that only had Tanya doing backup on the choruses is still a mystery to me. Tanya OWNED this song, no question about it. I've heard different explanations over the years that center around Tanya's contribution being replaced with Rob's vocals because Belly's second album King did not meet the labels sales expectations so the label presumed that her performance would drag them down. Don't know how true that is but it seems like the sort of thing label execs would do in those days
For some reason I'm reminded of 'Til Tuesday when I hear this wonderful song. How I LOVED this song back 20 years ago when it was released. I can just hear Aimee Mann singing on this track...while chugging away on a Fender bass. What a fantastic, well rounded "alternative nation" classic! Love it!

Hey guys, look at what was sung in France in the same 1995 like Judy: Check for a song named XXL by Mylène Farmer, especially one of her live performances such as the 2009 or the 2006 concerts. She's a stadium filler.
I only got into Catherine Wheel with the Adam and Eve album, then I listened to there other material and to me that is still their best album. Though I am willing to admit that it being my intro that I give it a little more weight.
