Catherine Wheel - Heal (HD) (Happy days 1995)
Catherine Wheel formed in 1990, comprising singer/guitarist Rob Dickinson, guitarist Brian Futter, bassist Dave Hawes, and drummer Neil Sims. Hawes had previously played in a Joy Division-influenced band called Eternal. They took their moniker from the firework known as the Catherine wheel, which in turn had taken its name from the medieval torture device of the same name. The band was often included in the shoegazing scene, characterized by bands that made extensive use of guitar feedback and droning washes of noise, as well as their continuous interaction with extensive amounts of effects pedals on the stage floor.
The band performed a Peel session in early 1991 while still unsigned; two 12" vinyl EPs were released on the Norwich based Wilde Club Records, named after the regular weekly Wilde Club gigs run by Barry Newman at Norwich Arts Centre. They signed to major-label Fontana Records after being courted by both Creation Records and the Brian Eno-run label Opal Records. The band's debut album, 1991/92's Ferment, made an immediate impression on the music press and introduced Catherine Wheel's biggest U.S. hit, "Black Metallic," as well as moderate hit "I Want To Touch You." [3] The album features re-recorded versions of some of the Wilde Club-issued EPs.
The more aggressive Chrome followed in 1993, produced by Gil Norton. With this album, the band began to shed its original shoegazing tag, while still making skillful use of atmospherics, such as on the song "Fripp." In a 2007 interview, Rob Dickinson said that members of Death Cab for Cutie and Interpol told him that without this album, their bands "wouldn't exist."[1]
1995's Happy Days saw the band delving further into metallic hard rock, which alienated a portion of their fanbase, even as it increased their exposure in the United States during the post-grunge era.[2] The single "Waydown," and especially its plane-crash themed video, received heavy play in the U.S. A more sedate strain of rock known as Britpop was taking over in the U.K., causing C.W. to continue to have greater success abroad than at home.
The B-sides and outtakes collection, Like Cats and Dogs, came out the following year, revealing a quieter, more contemplative side of the band, spanning the previous five years. This carried over into Adam and Eve in 1997, wherein the band scaled back the sonic force of their sound from its Happy Days levels, with clean playing on some songs that[citation needed] featured extensive use of keyboards and acoustic guitars. Alternately, songs like "Satellite" and "Here Comes the Fat Controller" were lush and orchestral in scope.
In 2000, Catherine Wheel re-emerged with a new record label, a new bassist (Ben Ellis); a modified name (The Catherine Wheel); and a new album, Wishville. After mixed reviews, record company turmoil[3] and lacklustre sales, the band went on a still-continuing hiatus.

I remember seeing them at the Roxy on Sunset Blvd. LA. . . . . they were opening for Slowdive. One of the best shows I've ever seen. . . . there were maybe 200 people in the club.
Did you know that the singer is cousins with bruce dickinson from Iron maiden(a medieval torture device) and that a Catherine wheel is ALSO an old form of torture? Love this song!!!

No one's done it better. Reaching those emotional highs. Amazing. Used to play this loud driving with my young kids. I swear, they're more balanced for it!
Whenever I feel like giving up, I put this video on repeat until it breaks the spell. Then I daydream about making myself a nice living building out exquisite bespoke 911's for people to make a living and that helps too...
Such pain, such beautiful pain. Every time I've broken from a relationship I've used this song to help...heal.
have loved Catherine Wheel since the 90s. But had never heard this AMAZING song before now. Life-changer.

I'm left in tears. The most beautiful video I have ever seen on youtube, with a piece of music by one of my favourite bands too.
Probably the most heart wrenching piece of visual audio I have ever witnessed you should feel proud.Beautiful.
Just started watching KZread music videos, but this by far the best thing I've seen yet. High quality visuals, just beautiful, and what an amazing rock anthem. Wore out two CW cassettes driving from Nebraska to L.A. one time, not a bad song on either one. Got to see them in Omaha a about fifteen years ago. Great show! One of the great underrated bands of all time, in my humble opinion.
I loved them all my life ! Just that simple.

@@kiskaanfiska1 Who this band reminds me of most of all is early Roxy Music when they still had an edge to their sound. Catherine Wheel to me sounds like a direct progression off the album "Country Life" if Roxy Music had decided to evolve more into art rock rather than going, sadly, the route of pop music. Still, Roxy's later albums were still great and we might not have had bands like Talk Talk had Roxy Music not laid the groundwork for that style of sophisticated European New Wave. But, yeah, Catherine Wheel is amazing. I actually did a semi-naked interpretive dance in a Burlesque bar covered in finger paint and wearing a demonic mask that I made where I emerged from under a red sheet and ran about the stage streaming the fabric before crawling back under the sheet in fetal position at the end of the song. It sounds ridiculous, but it went over extremely well and I owe it all to this song because I never would have been inspired to do a performance like that had I never heard "Heal". The song literally moved me so much I had to get on a stage and express myself to it even though I've never been a "serious" dancer. I just absolutely think this is one of the most beautiful things that was ever recorded.

Since both albums were produced by Tim Friese-Green, it’s nice nod to Talk Talk indeed.
And I guess this is how I also related my personal healing with love for nature and animals. By having a broken heart, my shell got also broken and i expanded my love for nature and i also understood its way
It's funny because when I look at reviews of Happy Days retrospectively, I'm surprised that many of them hate the shift from shoegaze to the more rock sound, whereas I was reading rock/metal magazines at the time whose reviews were like "wow, these guys have finally found their sound - this is great!!". Sadly for Catherine Wheel, I think they lost old fans and the rock/metal folks found them a bit too indie/arty, I guess. I loved this album though, and Adam & Eve.
Listening to this 2020 man Just makes my life better
This video takes my breath away each and every time I watch. How beautifully this is done music and scenary all together. ♥
This isn't the type of video I was expecting at all from a CW song, but I love all the animals. Awesome.

The world is a beautiful place without humanity in it.
@JakeJarmel So because something is beautiful necessarily means that something else is not? We are part of this and you are human too. The only ugly thing about humans is their rejection of themselves in the larger picture. I see beauty in humanity. I guess it comes down to vision. The cerebrally blind tend to loath themselves. I feel sorry for you. Aww.
Black metallic, much in our lives have we accomplished? or maybe we are driven because of ... If you need help!
author of THE RAGING IMPOTENCE at amazon.com books sez: Beautiful but overly saccharine, strange choice of subject matter for this vid. Something more PEOPLE-oriented would have been more apropos.
