Catastrophic Ford Focus 2.0L Engine Teardown. Single Cheek Repair And A Driver Who Didn't Care!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Our website is operational, visit www.Importapart.com! Its a bit rough around the edges but its a work in progress. Email part requests to Importapartsales@gmail.com
For this weeks teardown I wanted to find the most blown up and destroyed engine I could, regardless of what it was. This 2.0L Duratec Focus engine was a perfect candidate. I try to maintain an imbalanced balance of destruction on the channel and it had been too long since we tore down something really bad. This engine did not disappoint!
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart located in the Saint Louis MO area. Part of our model is dismantling and selling parts from rare and niche market engines. I don't build or rebuild engines, we simply supply hard parts to those that do!
Want to see a particular engine torn down? I may have already done one! No really, check out my other videos for the engine you'd like to see! I've made over 70 other teardowns from a Cummins to an LS7, and from Rotary to Ram Ecodiesels. You can expect a new teardown every week!
Check them out here • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
As always I appreciate all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
What will I tear apart next week? Just wait and see!
-Eric

@@young11984 In this case it was extreme owner negligence, a now very familiar theme on this channel. I remember one getting towed back after one of my sisters literally drove it until it stopped moving, which was when it locked up from lack of oil, mainly because it had been driven some 15 miles or so down the highway on three cylinders. Almost as good as when her fiancé's A/C quit working. They were baffled as to why I was carrying a large tote with my service gauges, refrigerant, thermometer, etc. and a scan tool. She's like "why do you need all that stuff? You just have to add this to make the car cool, right? He said we just need this" And she hands me a thing of coolant. Like, literally a bottle of coolant he bought from Amazon. They could not wrap their heads around the fact that A/C systems use refrigerant and not water to cool the interior of the car.

To tell you the truth, a rod about to launch does not always give a bunch of warning. I had a Ford Fiesta with the Kent engine. Loved the car. It developed what I thought was tappet noise, but it was February and seeing as I did my car work in the yard (in Michigan) I decided to wait for warmer weather. The tappet kept ticking until one day at about 70 mph, it went from tick to clatter to BOOM in about 2.5 seconds. Fortunately I had time to push in the clutch. I don't think a little front wheel drive car locking its front axle at 70 mph would have been a ride I would have enjoyed. I actually had enough momentum to make it to the next off ramp and park the car at a gas station. Only had to walk as far as the pay phone (it was a long time ago) Mine was the number two rod. It broke, with the bottom end still on the crank but ventilating the front of the block.

Would think an alternative explanation of torn rod would be the piston nugget got pinched between the rod and the cylinder wall as crank rotated--rather than momentum causing rod to fracture. That said, who cares, hun? Another great show! Best wishes from Florida.

I own a 2007 focus with this same engine and a 5-speed that I bought new. It’s been a great, reliable little car. It currently has about 150,000 miles on it. Those cars are considered disposable, but if you take care of them they’ll last. I rarely see one on the road anymore so I’d guess that most of them have gone to the junkyard by now. Obviously, the previous owner couldn’t be bothered to take care of it, and another focus goes to the crusher. What a waste. You mentioned the valve cover leak - my experience is that the valve cover gasket gets hard and starts leaking around 100,000 miles and needs replacing.

The car was probably being treated as disposable. I've had many cars like that over the years, bought at Auction and literally driven until they blow up or get sold on. I never changed the ownership over, so the option was always there to leave it on the side of the road rather than paying for towing. A car like that never even gets washer fluid, let alone an oil change.

I had one of these in the Focus ST170 trim. It had an intake manifold / throttle body area failure where it actually still drove ok (I did 50mph max, low rpms) but there was a Very Loud whizzy-whizzy-SLAP noise coming into the cabin. So it went to the garage before anything proper nasty happened. And then it got traded for a believe it or not faster Lexus CT / Posh Prius because the Focus handled nasty and the heavy clutch and terrible gearbox was causing huge amounts of leg pain (historic sciatic nerve / lower back injury). Oh and the ST170 2.0 had an engine save programme that heavily limited power until the engine warmed up. Thanks for giving me a look inside a variant of that old car's engine !

I had that exact engine in mine 2005 focus, eu version, minor changes (145hp). It did over 200k miles without any issues, never even had to change the timing chain. No oil leaks whatsoever. Loved that engine. The only issue with it was it was consuming more and more oil, especially past 150k mark and on higher revs - those engines had the tendency for the oil rings to get clogged and stuck. Besides that - pretty much indestructible if you give it at least minimum care. PS. that oil pump sound reminds me of a girl I knew

I"m located in the UK and I've owned several cars that used the European Ford Zetec version of this engine and (for clients) converted them to racing spec and used them in all manner of sporting conversions, these engines are good and make great power when tuned, we used to get nearly 240 hp@ 8.5K rpm from the 1.8L version on twin Weber DCOE48 carbs and in that tune they even retained a good smooth idle and great road manners. We found them to be completely reliable on standard rods, crank, bearings, oil pump, gaskets, valves etc, all we did was to change the pistons to the forged type, modify the head and fit hot cams and uprated valve springs, lighten the flywheel and fit a competition clutch and balance the rotating assembly. Whoever misused this one until it was so damaged must have been devoid of any mechanical sympathy. "Sausage" HT Racing Ltd

Somebody "sent it" on this engine, trailing a massive cloud of smoke as it went down the road. This particular engine probably leads the I Do Cars channel on a carnage to displacement ratio. We should all give this wee 2 liter Ford our respect, as that is quite an accomplishment! On second thought, this poor Ford's end was probably not leaving a giant plume of smoke on the road glorious, due to the sheer amount of carnage. Clearly this engine's last gasp of remaining life force was entirely devoted to destroying itself, with no energy allocated to powering the car down the road. This engine's condition is clearly the end result of a "free rev it until it blows up" event. Ritual engine sacrifice genrally occurs when a low value and unloved vehicle develops a rod knock. Unwilling to expend the money and/or effort to fix it, the cruel and heartless owner of this unfortunate Ford likely invited his buddies over for ceremonial going out with a bang festivities. Participants then gathered around the bouncing off the rev limiter Ford with beers in hand, not to worship at the altar of speed, but instead at the altar of Piston McNuggets and Fragmented Connecting Rod. It is likely bets were placed on how long it would last, and then the hilarity ensued. 😆

I have a nephew who seems to believe that taking a few minutes and spending a few bucks to add oil is somehow more trouble than having the engine blow up and then needing to buy another car. I can only surmise that he has some genetic flaw in his brain that prevents him from thinking otherwise since he has had a few cars that this has happened on. Even now he still seems to not realize that there is a good reason to check the oil level and add a quart every now and then as needed.

@@edifyguy I agree. You don't obey common sense, you should suffer the consequences. I get some people need to pinch pennies or don't have the time, but my brokest patches were when I was the most on top of my car's maintenance. I couldn't work and make money without it, and I certainly couldn't afford an unexpected tow or a new motor. Changing my oil on time cost me a whopping $20-25 once every few months and checking the level a couple times a week cost me about 15 seconds of my life each time .
