I Do Cars

Welcome to my channel, I Do Cars. Its an answer to the awkward question "So what do you do?". On my channel you'll find videos of the dumb and overzealous car projects I take on personally. You'll also find videos of getting cars running that are either wrecked, or have been sitting for a long time. There will be some how-to repair videos as well because showing people how to fix their vehicle themselves is what I love to do. Of course, you'll find engine teardown videos. Lots, and lots of engine teardown videos. One a week, at least. I own and run an auto salvage operation and part of our model is tearing down bad or core engines and selling the parts. Taking these engines apart is just another day in the office, so I'm happy to bring you along!

Big problem is the operating temp. Thermostat doesn't open till 221 degrees. Everything is heat soaked. ZZP makes a colder running thermostat for it

I love my 99 Miata. I can fix everything on my car cheep myself. I beat the hell out of it and no engine or transmission work other than timing chain. Still has original exhaust too.

But a 2 year old car should still have a manufacturer warranty, not a dealership purchased warranty. How do you blame the owner for a bad coolant line.

My assigned patrol car was nicknamed Lucky, because thats what you were if you survived a shift without any problems with it. It had exhaust leaks, a faulty power steering system, and other fun surprises that would happen once, then never again. The power steering thing was common among the explorers, and when my department told Ford, they took in all of the patrol vehicles, said there are no problems with them, returned them and the vehicles no longer had the issue and curiously had new parts. Ford was so shady about it, my department switched to Tahoes. And I work for a very very large department. Large enough that Ford apologized for their deceit.

Reminds of all those commercials with these people driving off road in a car made for everyday driving. Why am I having all these suspension problems? People seem to think they are driving buldozer. The wrx isn't a race car either.

My 2018 WRX FA motor spit a rod bearing all stock at 63k miles...just outside of warranty... subaru told me to go fck myself when i plead with them to cover it under warranty because i did my own oil changes and i didnt get them done at a subaru dealer. Luckily my dealership had given me a 1 year warranty and they covered a used longblock. I traded the car in after it was fixed and I'll never go back

2010 was the death of subaru. That forester that came out that year was total garbage. You should skip all subarus from them on. This is my harsh opinin. I've owned 3 versions. 1999 forester, 2003 forester, 2004 wrx. All of these went over 200k easily, no repairs mods gaskets at all. Neighbor bought a used 2014 outback, garbage. 60k and steering had a recall something. Pinging, garbage. All of our 4 other neighbors newer versions outbacks, rattle, ping on their various age ones. 2012, 2014, 2015.

Very presumptive video without real data. You talk about outliers but don't consider failures of serviced CVT's as outliers. Especially in the last 8 yrs. Couldn't bother to watch the rest of this. There are better channels. Don't get me wrong. Subarus have their issues. The one thing I will put totally on Subaru is not recommending a better maintenance schedule.

Eric suggested at 39:44 that the skirt wear on the pistons had a lot to do with the rod offset, the angle. I don’t think this caused the skirt wear. There isn’t any offset, the centre line of the rod shaft still goes through the centre of the crankpin. The piston doesn’t know that the big end is rotated relative to the rod shaft. I think the lower rod bolt has more load than the upper one now, it needs to be strong enough. Would be good to have fracture-split rod caps, I guess. IanB

here in Australia the average life of these CVT is sixty thousand KM, thats from a Subaru mechanic, main failure is A sensor that fails, its located inside the unit that controls the operation of the expanding pulleys to engine RPM.

I think I'll stick with my old N/A EJs. Having torn down two broken ones (seized '95 22E and an '03 251 with no bearings that still ran) and slapping the parts together to make a janky racing 2.5, I can say in confidence that they are stupid simple to work on.

I have an early 2000s Outback with the EJ25 engine and after buying it used way before all the prices on used cars shot up astronomically, I have been taking pretty good care of it since we bought it about 5 or 6 years ago. And my point is, and I hope I don't jinx myself, but it is reaching 250k miles. And the thing is what every mechanic says - you have to take care of the car and engine with regular maintenance and repairs as needed. And the other mistake people make with owning an Outback is not realizing that the engine is a 4 cylinder boxer engine. That's kind of a low key Japanese made Porsche 911 engine but without the frills and extra cylinders.

Of all cars sold today, imo Subaru is the company that could most benefit from electrification TOMORROW! … their engines are junk… always have been. How many quarts of oil does that tiny pan hold? Is it possible to get the exhaust any closer to the oil pan? I wonder what the oil temp is on one of these?
