Catasetinae orchids stages of growth

Some of the easiest orchids to grow if you can just follow a few basic signs of dormancy. The Catasetums and their relatives are some of the most unique and fragrant orchids that I've come across.

    Hello there! This is the BEST Catasetinae orchid video I have watched in KZread. I picked up a few tips from you here and dare say I am raising my Fdk. After Dark 'Black Pearl' well. Thank you so much and do continue making more orchid videos. Liked your FB page too! :)

    Super video, thanks for going through their various stages. I have received a few in 3” pots. Lots of healthy green leaves, but not the root growth I was expecting to see. Watered anyway. Hanging under a tree outside. Love them, can’t wait to grow flowers.

    Just got one and it is latter Sept. It is so rootbound that it can easily lifted out of pot. Don’t repot, right? How do I know if it is heading towards dormancy or if it is yellowing due to lack of water?

    Hi .. thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I have a couple questions that after scouring the web, I could not find an answer for. I live in NY and have my ctsm's under lights (approx 16 hours of artificial light that runs congruently with natural light) in east, west and south facing windows. Many of them are already losing their leaves... is this normal? It seems early (though in most cases bulbs are as large or larger than previous years' growth) In addition, some of the one's that are losing or have lost their leaves are putting out new growths. Should I continue to grow them under lights (for longer day lengths)? Finally, I understand that when leafless, they should be in decent humid environment, but does light matter (I wouldn't think so, but maybe?). Thank you so much for taking time to answer these questions.

    thank you very much , I recently got interressed by the catasetum , the different flowers (male and female) and the dormance period is very interressting. I intend to fly to the USA in winter , is it easy to purchase catasetum there ?

    How can you tell the difference between a male flower and a female flower when it's in spike?

  • @HolyCityOrchids

    @HolyCityOrchids

    Usually the female spike has less blooms on it. The females will also be more bulbous and the males will be more pointy shaped while developing. Females will stay green until blooming while males should start to get some color on them. On my FB page I'll post some side by side comparisons of the buds developing so you can see the difference :)

    Very nice video. What is the rough flowering size? Eg..... is the plant at 4:41 a flowering size one?

    Hi, will the dormant bulbs that have dropped all the leaves regrow their leaves or are they "done"?

    Today is Jan. 25, and my Catasetum has all her greenish leaves. Should I stop watering and fertilizing? Should she be placed in a DARK LOCATION? She is 2 years old.

    I didn't know about the light effect on the flower's gender. I have a question, once they come out from dormancy, do you have to cut off the roots from the old bulb or not?

  • @HolyCityOrchids

    @HolyCityOrchids

    If the roots are dead, yes, you should cut them. Dead roots will only hold moisture, and as they decay they can attract fungi. If they are alive then leave them be.

    ***** That means I have to repott it every year, or else I wouldn't know if the roots are good or not, right?

    fifi corina If you're going to be repotting your Catasetum, then yes you should cut off the dead roots. That should happen with any orchid you repot. You should always cut off the dead or rotten roots. If you don't plan to repot your Catasetums then you don't have to cut off the roots from the older pseudobulbs right away. Wait until you repot to cut off the dead roots. You'll be able to tell if the roots are good or not based on the health of the plant. If your Catasetum is producing new growths and the leaves are a healthy, vibrant green, then your roots are fine. Just because you can't see the roots doesn't mean you can't determine the health of the plant. Let your orchid tell you what it wants :) Some growers repot their Catasetums every year, and some maybe do it every 2 years. It just depends. I repot mine every Spring so I can add slow release fertilizer. Sphagnum moss also degrades rapidly, and that is what all of my Catasetums are potted in so I just repot every Spring. Hope this makes things a little clearer.

    There are some bog orchids that can handle constant moisture, in regards to your comment at 4:04 . I can't find them for sale though, I wish I could because my bog garden looks empty with just Sarracenia purpurea.

    The Habenarias are bog orchids. Perhaps that is the one you're thinking of? Even your bog orchids don't like to be constantly dripping wet. Typically, with your water loving orchids they prefer a moist medium. This is the point I was trying to stress. An orchid that is kept in stagnant, soggy medium does not benefit like a bog orchid that stays consistently moist with good airflow around its roots.

    No I'm not talking habenaria, I'm talking temperate plants like Plantathera, Grass Pink (Calopogon), Rose Pogonia (Pogonia), Arethusa, etc, the ones that grow in bogs of North America

    ***** I'm not familiar with many of the native species to North America. I plan on doing some orchid hunting in future videos though as there are 53 native orchids in my area. There aren't a lot of KZread videos about orchids in the wild so I'm going to change that, and let viewers see what these plants look like in their natural habitat.

    Cool! I've got some Native orchids I have to video as well, but they (except for the Goodyera) are already going dormant, so not much to look at right now. I also noticed there is almost no Native orchid videos on KZread, it's kinda strange considering all the weird stuff on KZread already.
