    I recently did an update on this plant... it's not doing so well sadly... I think it was a combination of factors... I had a pest infestation and it was causing the plant to go dormant too early.. and the leaves would go silvery. I have removed all of the media and roots and am starting fresh... the plant had grown beautifully and blooms for a number of years... then it went off the rails...

    PlantzNThings Gosh I’m so sorry to hear that, I hate when things like that happen. Last summer my biggest/ heaviest orchid was just finished draining and airing out a little, he was sitting on the edge of the counter and I sat down to watch my show and all of a sudden I see out of the corner of my eye some movement. I turn just in time to see him suddenly throw himself over the edge and hit the floor and break his super awesome flower spike, which had about 9 blooms on it! Man, I was so depressed!

    Do you choose a small pot because of your limited space only? Would a large pot be ok if you have the space? Or is it better to go with tight spaces for the orchid?

  • @PlantzNThings

    ***** it's best to not go too big with orchids. they like to feel secure in their home. I could have gone with a 7 or 8 inch pot but i had that pot available.

    Hey Bill! I'm getting ready to repot my witchcraft, and I have a couple of questions. Do I need to plant in a clear pot with aeration holes or can I plant in a solid container? Also - I'm seeing some people simply cut off all the old roots from the old pseudobulbs....have you noticed any benefit from leaving some of the older roots?? Thanks you!! ☺️

  • @PlantzNThings

    @PlantzNThings

    8 жыл бұрын

    +quixoticmantis you don't need to use a clear pot... I would add some vent holds in the sides of any pot you choose... but it's not a do or die situation. the vent holes in the side help the roots breathe and help the mix dry a little faster. the root situation is an interesting one... I only remove the dead looking roots... I feel it can only benefit the plant.. most of the catasetum group are dormant longer than the witchcraft so usually the roots are all dead anyways. the witchcraft for me seems to only be dormant for maybe 1.5- 2 months... it doesn't seem to be long enough to kill the roots. I hope this helps. Good luck with your re-potting

    Bill, how often do you water this when it's in growth? Compared to oncidiums or cattleyas?

  • @PlantzNThings

    @PlantzNThings

    9 жыл бұрын

    oncidiums like to dry slightly between waterings. with this one they want to stay moist.. (not soggy) i would treat it more like a Miltoniopsis if you have grown one of those. but this one will require a little more regular feedings when in active growth.

    Love your videos! Big Question: I have ordered a Millenium Magic from a grower. I should receive it approximately early November. It will be shipped wrapped in sphagnum moss. Obviously, I have to pot it up, but do I water it in, or leave it alone?

  • @PlantzNThings

    @PlantzNThings

    7 жыл бұрын

    oooo exciting! the care it will need will depend on what it looks like when it ships... if it is lush and green I would water and care for it normally.... if the leaves are yellowing I would pot it up and water sparingly and allow it to go dormant. if you receive it in it's dormant state you can just watch it and wait for growth to start... at that point you can pot it up... avoid watering until the roots are a few inches long. I hope this helps... they are really interesting plants.
