Cat food your cats will thank you for! (and how to make it)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Thanks for watching! I hope this helps you with your cat food, your budget, and your ability to do it all yourself and feel proud! It's so cool to be able to do this for our feline families.
Please join in on the home-made cat food conversation. Ask questions. Say something nice. Engage in a way that matters. I'll respond! (unless you're mean or unkind for no reason - don't do that). And, for Heaven sakes, subscribe to my channel and let's make some great things together. :)
Below you'll find a link for a pdf of this cat food recipe - it should help you as you go. But, before that, here's an overview of it.
How to make "homemade cat food" that makes 18-19 pints of super nutritious wet cat food for about $15! I use an Instant Pot to speed up the cooking process then pressure can the food to make it ready for long-term storage in the pantry or cabinet. I only refrigerate the open jar I am using. If you are only using this to feed your cat, it yields enough food for 42 servings of about 250 calories each, about what an average sized adult cat needs to eat each day. We still use some dry cat food, but it is the same stuff that our cats stuck their noses up at and picked at for the last couple of years. I think you'll find this homemade food is much cheaper than even basic dry kibble!
Below is an ingredient list and supply list:
(I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself! And, full disclosure, I would get a small commission if you were to purchase a product through any of the links)
To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
1 Whole Chicken, neck and organ meat reserved to include - I used a 6 lb bird.
White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice. It is easier for them to access the nutrition than brown rice.
Pumpkin - I used canned pumpkin puree. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar.
Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: amzn.to/3Sugr9t Ground flaxseed: amzn.to/48FE844
Additionally, you'll need the following: 4 Large Eggs, Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Toasted Wheat Germ, Frozen Mixed Vegetables, Ground Turmeric, Black Pepper, Taurine Supplement, and Refined Coconut Oil.
Get the full recipe on my site at www.shawntrautman.com/cooking...
Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
16 qt stock pot: amzn.to/495mBlA (this link is for a nicer one than I am using in this video)
Mesh Strainer: amzn.to/3U9hlJs
** Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy their red blood cells. Yikes! Let me know how it goes! Our current crew of 13 kitties give it 2 paws up with a Meow for extra points!
Thanks, Joanna

People are free to add carbs and veggies to the meat, but it doesn't change the fact that cats are obligate carnivores. Their digestive tract does not have the enzymes to break down the carbs and veggies. Having active and slim kitties does not add enzymes to their digestive tract. 😻 Of course they won't drop dead but it will shorten their lives. I am the happy owner of many kitties who live(d) beyond the 20 years of age. Just for your info.

You are 100% correct!! Cats are strictly carnivores. Dont use the "they are domesticated now" LOL. Yes, their environment is domesticated BUT their bodies have NOT CHANGED. NO CARB/STARCH AND NO VEGGIES SHOULD PASS YOUR KITTIES LIPS...EVER! I just lost a 23 year old kitty and the one before that was 22 yrs. old. ALL of them were on a raw food diet with supplements. Supplements are super important. I have been a health advocate for pets and a raw food diet for over 30 years. I always tell folks in the beginning of mentoring for a raw food diet this: 'Mimic the wild'. No, they are not in the wild but 'mimic' the diet of when they were in the wild.

Many 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🐈❤️🐈‍⬛ Yes, cats are obligate carnivores. Also, I feed mine a simple raw diet with added Taurine and sometimes other human-grade quality supplements. Their natural diet does NOT contain vegetation. You may see cats chew on a stem of grass or plant, but it is for a type of medicinal purpose, not for nutrition. In fact, I have never seen any cat out in the wild, cooking it's food . 😂

Agreed, no carbs in any form, whether vegetables or grains. Still, the ingredients are human grade, and that’s better than the majority of mass produced pet foods… I make raw to lightly cooked, human grade food for my cats (and one dog). Costs a little more than this recipe, but honestly, not by much.

I am feeling 48 cats total right now and I have IBD and skin conditions. I started your turkey and chicken cat food 1-1/2 years ago, slowly replaced wet cat food with your recipe and I have no cats with skin dermatitis and only have one cat with IBD episodes once a year. I do find that the turkey recipe without flax seed is best for the cat with IBD. They do still get dry cat food, however, they are eating less and seem to be in good health. Thx for your help. My best regards for your time and sharing this information. ps i HAVE DROPPED BY FOOD COSTS BY $200 PER MONTH.

Hi Joanna: A few observations -- all positive. 1. You have a beautiful kitchen. 2. Your kitchen is the size of my NYC apartment (lol). You are so fortunate. 3. I am sure you have been doing this canning for your cats for years. 4. I am also sure you have made every mistake in the book. 5. You are an excellent teacher and thus you have passed on all the reasons to not make the same mistakes. 6. Your effort to keep your cats healthy has (I am sure) saved you a bundle in vet fees 7. What else can I say? This is a PERFECT tutorial and I will strive to emulate you on a much smaller basis. My future cats will be very happy. Thank you so so much for sharing all your knowledge. I’ve not blended meat or used the bones (great idea to do so) bc I shred the chicken then use bone broth. and alternately use chopped beef, chicken livers, organ meats, turkey, salmon as well as plain pumpkin and green peas, apple also and eggs I boil and chop. Always serve with a drizzle of coconut oil. Chefs love to chop, lol- it’s a meditative thing and drizzle!) Mine seem to enjoy the variety and textures. Thanks for sharing this video. I think you're on to something in a variety of ways. One huge thing is trust. Trust in what you feed your pet. Food quality and safety. I knew people years ago whose cats were poisoned and died because the (USA and canada) store bought cat food they'd trusted for years had switched to using ingredients from China (or was now manufactured in China) and one or more ingredients had been doctored with some sort of plastic or chemical so it would pass some protein test or something. I recall feeling fearful of owning a cat or a dog again because I believed the propaganda that only store bought food is "safe" for pets. I thought I wouldn't be able to feed the cat or dog an appropriate, safe diet. Videos like yours are vital. I've had to rent for years, unfortunately, and every landlord has had a strict _no pets_ policy. I've also been struggling financially for a long time, so I can't afford vet care, litter, toys, etc for a cat. But, if I'm ever blessed with a cat in my life again, I'm going to make the cat's food. I've saved this video on a couple of my playlists. Thank you.

Great recipe for the cooked portion of a cats diet. I feed my cat 75% raw and 25 % processed. The processed portion is wet food and dry biscuits ( kibble). I will try your recipe as a healthy replacement for the wet food. The oldest and healthiest cats are the ones who have been fed a mostly raw diet. Raw is best as ( firstly it is NATURAL and how they eat in the wild) and secondly no nutrients have been lost in the cooking process - thirdly, the animal is able to receive all the live enzymes that are readily available in raw meats. Cats are fussy creatures by nature so i do incorporate some cooked wet food to mix it up but my intention is to always stick to the 75% raw Rule. This way your cat will ALWAYS be the best they can be. Their teeth, joints coat and organs remain in tip top condition and the lifespan is well into their 20s.

Even if only 10% of cat food is as fresh as this, you drastically reduce disease. Bravo! Personally, as a hybrid raw/fresh/wet feeder, I don't feed my cats kibble due to the carbs & carcinogenic heating process used to make kibble. Also, careful with too much bone, 10% of the batch weight is the balanced amount. Too much causes constipation. Thanks for the canning tutorial also. Best way to store it, rather than plastic which leaches chemicals into the food. Beef gelatin powder has great benefits to prevent arthritis in cats but also gives the food a pate consistency. ❤ 🐈 ❤

I’m old. Coconut oil not in my family history. We raised a hog for butchering every year on our family homestead. The best fat for us was lard rendered from the hog, organically raised before anyone labeled it that. Any reason to avoid substituting lard for the coconut oil?

  • @JoannaTrautman

    @JoannaTrautman

    Ай бұрын

Your comment made me smile. Living in rural Appalachia for the last few years, I do, in fact, have a pretty decent understanding of what you are talking about. What you can purchase in the grocery store is a far cry from the lard you were raised cooking with. I use coconut oil as it is available to me, and has a triglyceride structure I can get behind. That being said, if I were fully homesteading, including raising and butchering livestock like pigs or beef, I would absolutely render and utilize that fat for all sorts of things, cooking, soap, and candles included. I've found single ingredient plant-based products are closer to what they say they are, especially if they are specialty. It's hard to mix in cheap oil to coconut oil - even refined, coconut oil has specific properties that make it solid at most room temperatures and melt rapidly at anything above, unlike butter and most other vegetable fats. I'm not sure if I answered your question, but I hope my comments give you insight into my reasoning! Cheers, Joanna

I think you're making your own cat is a terrific idea. My problem is the rice. I've been canning for years and would never add rice to any jar. No pasta or any any type of rice. I'm going to try your cat food, but no rice.

  • @JoannaTrautman

    @JoannaTrautman

    Ай бұрын

I understand completely. I think your cat food will be great if made without the rice. Rice is a potential risk factor in canning as it can inhibit heat transfer into the center of the food inside the jar. I cook the rice prior to the canning process and use long processing time because of this. The interior of the pressure canner easily achieves the safety zone temperature for destroying bacterial spores (like botulism), but the processing time is what allows the heat to transfer within the jars. Now, in the instance that spores survive the canning process and grow into a bacterial colony that can make people sick, there are signs, like bulging jar lids and foul odor when the jar is opened. Basically, the signs of bad food. This can happen with any foods that you can, and is one of the inherent risks of canning food, period. Again, thank you for watching, Joanna

I pick out the bones in my older chicken cat food video. If you have a small food processor or regular blender, it should handle the smaller bones just fine. Also, cooking the carcass even longer will further soften the bones (as well as leech the minerals into the cooking water, which we use in the food.) My advice: pick the big meat off and pressure cook the carcass for another 35-40 minutes making sure there is some liquid in the pot. The bones should easily snap in your fingers so a small food processor or blender should work. Thanks for watching, Joanna

I hope it turned out well - this cat food is the most frustrating food I pressure can. If you find a bunch of your jars didn't seal, I would empty the unsealed jars back into the stock pot, add water so you have a more liquid consistency, and then pressure can again. Heaven knows I've had to do that. I agree on your dog enjoying it. I call it "sauce" or "gravy" for my dogs, and they absolutely snarf everything it touches. Best of success, Joanna

I commend her for making it herself. I did Raw chicken thighs ground with bones supplemented (I think I added vit E), liver & heart occasionally (no beef). Froze it. 4 healthy happy long living cats (19-22). Loved their food, never threw it up, no stool issues, no behavior issues, beautiful coats and perfect weight. No diseases, no kidney disease! Doing dog diet first time, a year now for a 9 yr old Doxin. More complex formula w organs, seeds, fruit, veggies, etc. Bulk is mostly raw chicken cut up with whole bone, oily fish/sardines once a week. She was an elderly sickly sausage of a dog, now trim and puppy like. No kibble. Belueve not supposed to alternate cuz they build diff digestive enzymes for kibble vs real meat diet. I dont can because I dont want that heat. Because of her weight, I measure amount of food by % of weight stepping down to target wt. Lost half her weight with zero complaints . Dogs & cats have a high tolerence to chicken diseases, our food supply is decent, contamination is usually on plants so wash em and feces which we cant handle, but they can and do eat it to change their gut bacteria or a treat. Highly recommend the effort. Doesnt have to be expensive but takes research and time. I enjoy the task and love watching my dog wag her tail and make choices as she's eating.

I heard cooking meat releases the taurine they need. I always do raw tuna, salmon, (canned as a backup), & lamb usually a few times a week as a supplement to their dry food. They will tolerate chicken, but prefer the other. I buy the brand Orijen. Always, as no other brand compares, so far. If the first 5 ingredients in a dry cat food are meal, peas or lentils, then it’s not that good for them. Also canola oil is another sneaky ingredient that isn’t good for their digestion, as well as mine.

Hi Joanna, thank you for your recipes and great explanations. Thank your husband, too, for his great camera work. ;-) I have a question as I'm starting to make my own cat food now, (as in today,) using your chicken video and recipe from a year ago. I would love to use the instant pot, and am curious what size that pot is that takes an entire roasting bird? I have five cats, all seniors, and I want to get away from the canned food and reduce the amount of kibbles they eat. Canned cat food prices have just skyrocketed, and the quality of the food (depending on which brand you get,) is questionable. I've had cats get various tummy and other digestive issues over the last two years, and have had enough. Since I already make my dog food, I didn't think it would be too much of an issue to start with the cat's food. AND I really want a way to cook that chicken faster, so am looking at a larger instant pot. Thanks for the help, and keep up the very informative videos!

I use this 6 quart Instant Pot amzn.to/3x0VGdl, and it fits a chicken nicely. I also use my pressure cooker at least five times a week to cook for humans, and I'm typically cooking for 6 to 10 people. If I am doing something like beans or a main dish, it allows me to cook for a meal with just a bit of leftovers. For smaller groups it is great for chilis and stews. I tend to use it for the slower cooking ingredients and then add it in to the larger soup with noodles and quick-cooking veggies. I saw that at least Instant Pot makes an 8 quart pressure cooker which looks nice amzn.to/4bIJBZp, but my 6 quart definitely does the job. I absolutely agree on the pet food prices! Once you get the hang of using a pressure cooker you're going to be regularly saying "I bet I could pressure cook that and it would be even better!" Thanks for watching, Joanna

First off, good for you for giving the recipes a go! If your batch seems thick, I would add water before canning it. The mix will absorb a lot of the moisture during the canning process, and if it is too dry, or pasty, it is more likely to cause a problem with the sealing process. Make sure it is hot and a very pourable consistency and leave enough headspace (the space between the filling and the top of the jar. As far as adjusting your cats to it, patience and mixing it with accepted food for a while seems to give the best results. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching, Joanna

Thank you for sharing your recipes. I've watched all of the cat food making recipes. As someone who has one senior cat that is a picky eater, I would love it if you share tips/proportions for making a test batch recipe.I don't want to make a full batch only for her to not eat it. I don't have an instapot or pressure cooker and no blender that can grind bones. In seems (based on the other recipes and stated in the turkey recipe) because of using dark chicken or turkey and some organ meat, the addition of taurine is not necessary? I'm thinking maybe to start with a smaller batch of the chicken recipe. Do I need taurine, if so how much? Is the flaxseed powder okay for a senior cat? Thanks for any help you can offer.

If it helps, you can cook a chicken in the boiling water, add a sweet potato & carrots, then take chicken out to use for other recipes. The neck bones bones just crushed together with my gloved fingers when I made this. I took out all the bigger bones. I added most of her recipe in a small batch. I used a blender to make everything bisque for my cat.

I will add a brief equipment list to the video description, and I know you there are multiple places where you could find the blender and instant pot, but here is a link on Amazon. Blender: amzn.to/4bbp3Yp I use an Instant Pot Duo, and that is available on Amazon here: amzn.to/4beRlRS My Vitamix is over 10 years old, and I purchased a re-furbished model then. The pressure cooker has been reliable - I use it almost every day, and have had to replace a fuse in it, but otherwise it has been fantastic. Hope this helps, Joanna

Thank you for all this awesome info! I didn’t catch why you were adding extra taurine? You said that meat had enough so I’m curious why you’re adding it, if it provides extra benefit.

  • @JoannaTrautman

You are very welcome. Good question. I added extra taurine more to demonstrate how to do it. This recipe should provide adequate taurine without supplementation, but the supplement boosts it to the upper levels of the recommended allowance. Excess taurine is excreted through the kidneys and urinary tract, so excess doesn’t harm the cat. I’ve had so many questions and comments about it over the years I used it in this recipe. For young cats or extremely active this extra taurine is more likely to be utilized rather than filtered and excreted. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching, Joanna

It should. Experiment in small batches, making sure there is plenty of liquid. I had better success with my blender than my food processor, but other people have found the opposite. Also, cooking the bones one extra time in the pressure cooker beyond when you cook the bulk of the meat can further soften the bones. Hope this helps, Joanna

Is taurine for humans the same as taurine for cats? Also can I omit the pepper and corn? Is the rice okay to cook before hand and also is it safe to can? I have done some rebel canning. I just have no experience with rice. Thank you, I apologize for all the questions I just want to do this right. I have 2 chickens in my fridge and 4 cats one who is battling cryptosporidium he’s on his second round of meds for it. So I’m going to be making this I have everything to do it. I hope it will help my little guys immune system. The ingredients in cat food nowadays isn’t the best. Thank you for this video❤

I'm sorry, I just saw this message! I can the rice, but you can certainly can it without the rice and add it later or omit it completely. Outside of a little bit of energy, it isn't critical to the recipe. Taurine is taurine is taurine, it is an amino acid, so if you find a supplement that is unflavored, no food dyes, etc, it will work. Cryptosporidium is a nasty microorganism... When my cats are young, or if they have been injured (they are mostly outdoors now), I give this food with no kibble to them as it boosts their hydration as well as I trust the ingredients. However, if it is new to your crew, you may have to gradually introduce it. You may want to let them lick a spoon that has been used to stir the chicken to introduce the flavor. All the best, Joanna

Vitamix. I have the this blender: amzn.to/4bZzz6r I have had this one for almost 10 years (I purchased a refurbished model just like in this link) after burning up 2 other brands of blenders with smaller motors - I use this tool every day, usually for multiple projects. A food processor will also work, I just use the Vitamix as one of my go-to kitchen tools. Joanna

I currently make homemade cat food with a similar recipe (minus adding on the taurine supplement). I do add in canned sardines in water only. How would i adjust your recipe (or would I need to adjust) using the taurine supplement? Love the details in your video and the time you’re taking to help keep our fur babies healthy. Thank you.
