    @@kasselmom my 3 cats know "are you hungry" and " do you want to eat". They will literally jump up and run to their bowls in anticipation. I've also been able to teach 1 of them to give me a fist bump if he wants a treat. He's the most food motivated so I started to teach him first. The other 2 are a little slower at picking up this trick. I'm at the lick my hand for the treat stage with them, only time will tell if they too can pick up this trick. I've learned extreme patience is key. With a little patience and time I believe it's possible to teach a cat most anything. Just let the cat guide you. When they're showing interest at all is best and never force them to do anything. It can be a little difficult at first but once your kitty catches on to what you want them to do it will go much faster. Once they learn 1 trick the rest are much easier.

    Thank you so much for defying the myth about feeding kitties the same thing all the time! When I first adopted my senior, people criticized me for giving her a bunch of different wet food options to find what she liked, and then rotated between her favorites. I made a game of it, would put several flavors out for her, and she would pick the one she wanted for that meal. People said it was dangerous for me to give her different foods! I made sure to OK my approach with the vet, so was not being negligent. Who wants to eat the same thing all the time? Not me or my kitties!

    I totally agree with the importance of giving your get a lot of different food types. In the shelter I worked we often had cats who only got one brand, one flavour and they refused to eat anything else because they were so stressed out and frightened. With my own cat I adopted I had similar problems. She was fed one dry food in one flavour since she was a kitten. Now she is five and I needed four months to convince her that wet food and different tastes are nice. She still wants her dry food and begs like she starves to death, but I keep it at as a jackpot treat because she won't eat any other treats, and I tried even human stuff XD. One quick sentiment over talking nutrion to you VET: Our deceased family cat was heavily diabetic and the VET recommended a really expensive DRY FOOD WITH ADDED SUGAR ... I'm getting so angry even now ... So honestly I don't trust VETs too much on nutrition.

    I know this video is 2 years old, however I would like to add my little anecdotal advice if your cat is struggling to transition to eat wet food: get a kitten!! My Rory was the pickiest of the picky eaters. He would only lick the juice off the wet food but he wouldn't actually eat any of it, no matter how many different kinds of foods I would get him to try. That was until I got a kitten, named her Tsuki. Kittens are wonderful at learning new habits, so I have been giving her nothing but wet food and I've been changing up the kind of foods I do give her, so I'll give her a raw egg along with her wet food and she absolutely loves it. So when Rory saw me giving her wet food, he almost overnight decided he wanted to eat what she was eating. Fast forward to now and I have Rory eating wet food with a raw egg and now I want to try raw salmon, to see if I can get him to eat that too. 😊

    While I appreciate that removal of grazing may ease transition from one type of food to another, I think it's also important to gradually transition from grazing to meals only. Also (my personal opinion), once the cat has successfully transitioned food types, reintroducing a source of additional food for grazing should be done. (In my experience, a cat will eat the food it enjoys and ignore other food sources, **unless** for some reason the cat becomes extra hungry between meals. Also, having the security of knowing a food source is **always** available frees a cat - or a person, or any creature - to shift energy normally devoted to thinking about food toward some other, hopefully more beneficial, endeavor.)

    Mr. G. - I feed my cat raw chicken mixed with T.C. Feline supplement - and (wait for it)- cantaloupe! I don't remember how this got started, but she taught me - it wasn't my idea. No other vegs or fruits have interested her, not even asparagus, so that's her diet. She's healthy, active, gorgeous (solid grey matte coat - maybe some Maltese), and in the 5 years I've had her on this regimen she has vomited only once, canned cat food. Has anyone else reported to you a melon-eating cat? What do you think of that? You are a genius for having found this entertaining and digestible way of delivering important care, training, and behavioral information to us cat owners who otherwise would think of our cats as our pets. HA!

    You can always wet down dry cat food with bone broth. If i had to feed my 6 cats on a tight budget, that's what I'd do. The bone broth would add back the nutrients they lose in heating dry food with the exception of getting the protein up the percentage raw food gives, plus blood and the brain parts... like he said. But it would be better than plain straight dry... and I'd get dry food that doesn't have grains. (Actually looking on the ingredient list, not the front side ads). It's the grains that cause the diseases in cats so badly. I was always told, even if cats have less to eat but good food, it's better than plenty of toxic food. Hard thing with indoor only cats is they will start eating things they shouldn't (plastic, paper etc) if they get hungry. Outdoor cats will find something... bugs... mice... rodents. Indoor cats will eat not good things when they are stressed and hungry. Lol... it's a tough thing to domesticate an animal. In really hard times... I'd have to let my cats try to hunt their own food to supplement. It's hard, especially knowing times are about to get really tough for everyone. It's expensive for humans to eat crappie food now. One day at a time... the best we can with what we know... that's all we can do.

    When you prepare their raw food try to buy everything in bulk,which should last a couple weeks or months. That only can reduce cost enormously. Also I believe that dry food isn’t 100% bad for them,we know that some cats can live an active healthy life without any serious health issues with a full 100% dry diet ( but again that it’s not the case, we still want to avoid that) So you keep it at a reasonable amount, like 10-15% their portions. It’s equivalent to human fast food, if you enjoy some here and there, and most cats go crazy for it, you can consider adding some of those to minimise the cost of food if you feeding multiple felines at one !

    I have a scared kitty who was rehomed to me. She has a complicated story, she hides from me while I am awake, only been here 3 weeks,... Her previous humans told me that wet food was not a good idea for her as she is a long hair cat. I took your advice and tried giving her a poultry based wet food, in addition to an optional separate portion of her dry food. She went to town on the wet food, and her digestive system handled it very well. I think my scared girl may just have a fish allergy. Tonight she gets chicken and gravy shreds. Last night she had turkey and gravy. I just want the best for my scared girl. She's a Queen, but she's too afraid to embrace it. Thank you for the videos. Your help an insight is invaluable to me. That is a really good idea...our kitties are on the pink bag of Iams right now, but him saying he saw kitties starve themselves because of not being familiar with the food scares me. BUT, our two kitties are strays that showed up out here in a VERY small country town and they were just HUNGRY. I think if something DID happen to all four of us they would possibly revert back to just eating whatever is available. I know it is SO different for a cat in a cage at the shelter vs. a cat out in the wild who is hungry all of the time and just looking for their next meal. With the poor babies who end up in shelters after someone has loved them as their own, and they are suddenly put into a shelter, I think maybe they are going through their own form of kitty sadness/depression, as well, which can cause a loss of appetite possibly :( Either way, I think our kitties will just eat whatever they can...we give wet food every few days as "yummies"...they know the word and hear the snap of the can. I look forward to switching over to raw in the near future...I think it will be easy to do it, but I am concerned about cost....I am going to look up recipes and see what all is involved

They told me some pets have sensitive stomachs. They told me to experiment with foods and add pure pumpkin to the diet. The plain stuff with no additional sugars or anything. It helped but not fully. Then I found Hill's Science Diet: Sensitive Stomach food at Tractor Supply. A dry food. The cats have never been better. So I'm hesitant to do any changes.

    I tried most of these tips for 6 months when I first adopted my hoarder cat rescue. She still only eats kibble despite trying several wet food brands. She has a lot of food insecurity issues and would insist on only eating 1/3 to 1/2 of it (and I’d only serve a 1/2 of a 3 oz. can!) then “bury” her wet food for later and then it dries out. I put it in the fridge and she hates leftovers so there’s that (even after heating it up). I may try again at some point once she’s better recovered from her PTSD. I’ve been using a timed feeder for her dry but she still grazes on it all day and always saves some for later. If I take it away, she freaks out and paces around the house.

    give her time. i rescued an aproximatelly 1 year old panther off the streets. she was probably raised indoors and "escaped". for the first months i couldnt even convince her to eat wet food. what helped is that my 2 older cats are used to eating wet and raw food mostly, are mostly schedule fed and they get suuuper exited when i do certain things that signal them that feeding hour is up so she also got into the excitement with them. was very dissapointed in the beginning when i put wet food in front of her. she DID NOT like it. i smudged some on her nose so she tastes it at least. she started eating little by little wet food. also, what i do with her wet food is that i add a bit of hot water and mix it, so that brings up the temperature of the food a bit and also makes the smell and taste more potent. even after a year she still doesnt eat raw food. she licks it, eats like a pea size and leaves the rest. but the same way she got used to wet food, i have hope she will grow into liking raw food as well. dont give up!

    hey my cats will only eat pate food. the their fav way to eat it is when I use hot water to turn it into a soup. I get the most response on wet food from them when I make it that way! maybe when you take it out of the fridge add a bit of water and heat it up for a few seconds in the mic! Ive been trying to encourage more chunky foods for my cats and the way they best eat those is when I nuke em for like 10-20 seconds (it doesn't have to be HOT! just luke warm!) they dont eat all of the chunky that way but they eat more of it than they would normally! best of luck! maybe some calming treats would help kitty stabilize a bit? and once you get her into a routine I suspect that may help her also! I have a puppy who has similar food struggles! she GULPS it down and when we first got her a few months ago nothing in her reach was safe! she acted like she was going to starve to death! now I can leave her in the same room as the cats food and she will NORMALY ignore it! last night we allowed her to sleep out side of her kennel and she never once touched the kittys food! so give kitty some time! and like I said a regular feeding schedule seems to have helped puppy out a LOT! Also her calming treats help as well!

    I may try the lickable treats with her (Friskies Lil Soups look promising) as a start. That's the only thing I haven't tried that Jackson suggested. She's on a high protein/low carb food and always drinks out her fountain. It would be good if I can get her to eat some wet just for the variety and so that things are easier in her senior years (meds, tooth issues, etc.). I even tried Fancy Feast after buying premium brands and she wouldn't go for it . . . and I thought FF was like kitty crack. I've had her nearly a year and she's improved a ton. She was almost feral in the beginning and hid in cat caves all the time.

    Hey Jackson, thanks for the good info (once again)! One of our cats was switched to a wet food diet recently because of diabetes (in fact, switching food reversed her diabetic symptoms). Your comment about cats eating warm fresh food in the wild was a light bulb moment for me. I started serving the wet food with a couple of tablespoons of hot tap water poured on top, and it was surprising to see how eagerly the cat lapped it up. It really increases the aroma (or stink, if you hate the smell of wet food), and I'm sure the extra moisture is good for her, too.

    I'm mostly feeding my cat raw food and he totally loves it. There's way more of that "raw cat" in him now, and it's great to see him so active and happy. My vet said you should give your cat a bit of good quality dry food too, just so he stays accustomed to it. If he later in life gets a kidney disease for example, it might mean he has to have a low-protein special diet which in some cases is dry food, and it's good that your cat is used to it. Jackson's kibble rant seems a bit biased to me, and I don't know if it's only about American kibble or every kibble ever created no matter where you're from. In my country not every dry food looks like carbage. Is kibble that bad if there's no grain in it and very little carbs? Is it that bad if there are no artificial colors or flavors added? Is it that bad if the brand says they use low temperatures in the making process? Is it that bad if the ingredients are clearly stated in the package and you know exactly which parts of an animal are used? Is it that bad if you serve it to your cat mixed with water, like cereal, and your kitty obviously likes it? Jackson makes it sound like giving dry food to your cat is a crime, but I really think it's ok if it's only a small part of your cats diet and you make an effort to give only the best dry food available. What ya think?

    When it comes to kibble if it is low / no grain in it, it usually has legumes which can cause kidney disease in your cats if fed over time. This is actually why my vet told me that when choosing between the two, the grain free kibble is usually worse for them because of that. Grain free wet or raw food is good for cats though. Granted, if you are willing to put in the time to look into the cat food ingredients on the bag and know the tricks they use to trick you into buying their kibble (for example, “made with beef” has less meat than “beef for cats” because of laws stating how much meat is required to use such phrases in the USA), I don’t think kibble would hurt your cats. It’s a hassle but hey, I don’t want to bring raw cat food with me when I go on vacation or road trips with my cats. I think it as a treat from their healthy raw diet. Hahaha.

    There are also a lot of dehydrated raw foods on the market which you can use to help switch a cat from kibble to raw by tearing it up into small pieces or grinding it up and sprinkling it on. If you're switching from wet to raw you can moisten it and add it to the wet. I always kept a bag of dehydrated on hand (same brand as frozen raw) in case A: the power goes out and I lose the food in the fridge/freezer and B: if I forgot to defrost the next meal and my pet wants to eat now!. Another switching tip is present the food in a different way. Maybe the pet will turn their nose up if you serve it for a meal in the kitchen but will eat it when presented in a puzzle toy in the living room. Also I had a dog who refused to drink when away from home no matter how hot it was outside. Worried about dehydration I used to take a small amount of the dehydrated raw, mix with water and she'd gobble it down. She thought she was getting a extra meal and I knew I was getting water in her.

    Also they took the raw when I first fed them from my hand, the way I do with those creamy treats. Even cold (without the steamer technique) they would eat it. Perhaps my hand warmed it; or perhaps they recognized it as a treat because out of hand is the way I offer the creamy treats.

    Great tips! Also, as bone broth to dry food to transition it to "wet" I've never seen a cat turn down bone broth...ever! (Unless they were sick, in which case, they didn't want to eat period) but bone broth is an excellent enticer and even treat. Also, we have incorporated Dr. Marty's raw freeze dried into our raw food routine... there's lots of ways to make it different!

    I agree with the pumpkin advice. Also is the cat drinking enough water? Not drinking enough water can cause pooping issues as well. Might even want to put water in the kibble and let it rehydrate the kibble. Mix the mushy w hard kibble in order for kitty to get more fluids into their system but they still have the hard kibble mouth feel.

    Thank you Jackson! The thing I worry about most, is how to do this when I'm gone for a couple of days or vacation. My elderly neighbor watches my cat and always takes good care of her. But I don't think I could ask him to thaw out meat, warm it a bit, feed it to her, remove it after 30-45 minutes and then do that three/four times a day? How do you all do this?

  • @dreamwalker2518

    @dreamwalker2518

    I would always keep one or two wet food brands on hand and feed those sometimes, so the cat stays used to it. You need it for example when the cat needs to stay at the vet clinic overnight, they won't feed her raw food but canned will be fine.

  • @Neinteen91

    @Neinteen91

    Either educate her and explain why you decided to switch the diet to raw or find someone who's comfortable handling raw food. I'm pretty sure if you hire a pet nanny they wouldn't say no, just pack some raw in separate container per meal(i like to use snack size ziplock bags) and freeze so all they have to do is warm it up with hot water and transfer the content in a bowl. You know, make it easier on them. I wouldn't advise letting her feed kibble while you're away, they're highly addictive to cats and he/she might start to avoid raw.

  • @emmarosestrong

    You can prepare it ahead of time in microwave safe containers. Once they’re habituated to eating meals, they’ll likely be finishing their meals off and you won’t have to worry about picking up leftovers. And there’s no harm in going down from three/four to two larger meals a day while you’re away.

    Well if your cat has been transitioned to a raw diet then they won’t need to do that, they only need to warm up the meat and leave it for your cat to eat

    As long as you have it portioned out I don't think it's that much more complicated than telling someone to feed wet food twice a day. My cat might sometimes wait a bit to eat, but will generally scoff it down straight away so no need to wait 40 min :)
