Just to note raw food from the grocery store hasn't gone through any processes to aid in the reduction of harmful bacteria. Thats because most of it is expected to be cooked for human consumption. Now pets raw food sold in pet stores has to go through a high pressure process to help remove the harmful bacteria beforehand. I personally trust this before I trust raw meat from the store or myself. Runs less risk! I love feeding Primal Frozen Raw myself.

I studied Veterinary Technology for a while and I remember being so confused being taught that our pets have a more delicate digestive system than us, yet our heavily Purina sponsored Nutrition class insisted carbs and cholesterol were 'harmless' and animals needed tons of empty fillers. It was jarring and none of the instructors seemed to see the disconnect.

This happens with human healthcare, as well. The textbooks are influenced or sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, and doctors are taught which drugs are for which disease, but they barely learn anything about proper nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress/mental wellness, etc.

Cholesterol is harmless for cats, so there's a disconnect here. Cats are carnivores..Meat has lots of cholesterol... Cholesterol is regulated by the liver, dietary cholesterol has little affect on cats, or else being carnivores would make no sense....

Okay, so it's not *technically* a raw food success story, but it's pretty close. When we adopted our 15 year old cat in November, she was sent with a big bag of Hill's Science Diet dry food for weight control. She was overweight, her coat was brittle feeling and matted, her skin was flaky (she literally had like this dandruff kind of flakes all throughout her fur that would come off of her when you pet or brushed her), and we were told she slept all day and wasn't interested in toys because, y'know she was a senior cat. Well, after doing a *ton* of research before we brought her home, I decided we'd feed our cat Tiki Cat wet food (which as far as I can find is the closest to a raw diet as you can find in stores). It includes bone, cartilage, and organ meat and nice actual pieces of meat in shreds or chunks (for fish), it's not a can of brown pattee or those weird homogeneous cubes in gravy, it's actual meat in real meat juices with a nutritionally complete recipe (all the supplements Jackson listed in the vid). When she came home with us, I tossed the kibble and transitioned her pretty quickly to Tiki Cat exclusively. Anyway, we have had her for 2 ish months now and guys, she is like a different cat. She's energetic, loves to play and *leaps* through the air to catch her favorite air prey toy. She's 15 yrs old and she hunts and stalks and plays like a kitten again (granted, in small bursts, but still). Her coat is amazing now! (I dematted it her first week with us) It's shiny and soft and her dandruff is totally gone! Her skin is clearly healthier and she used to have that crusty red buildup on each side of her eyes by her nose, but that's gone too! She has even lost 4lbs and she just seems so much healthier and happier than when we first got her. What I've learned from this is that proper nutrition is literally life changing, and I just wanted to share our success story! Best of luck with your cats!

Wow, you have such a success story!!! Congratulations. 💖 You gave your kitty a new lease on life, that's for sure. We also feed our six cats Tiki Cat. They were born feral, but are now domesticated, with partial exception to their mom. She's sweet but still gun-shy to being touched, so we don't. Half tempted to see if Jackson has any good tips to help domesticate her! LOL Anyway, Tiki Cat is the best! Although a raw diet might be great for them, I googled raw food for cats and am horrified at the prices. One cat wouldn't be a problem, but we have SIX! I'm not too crazy about making homemade food for my cats, either, so we will continue with Tiki Cat for the immediate future. I've owned cats all of my life and an so impressed with Tiki Cat. I actually got excited when, in opening the first can, I saw tangible chunks of sardines! Tiki Cat is by far the closest thing you can get to catching and rendering live prey animals for your cat. 😍

I work at a pet supply store that specializes in pet nutrition and feeding raw is much less expensive than feeding canned food in most cases. I compared popular wet and raw brands at the store and used my 8 pound adult cat as the “control” to see how much I would feed of each a day and how much it would cost a day. Unless it’s the 12oz pate cans, raw is cheaper per meal. For example, if I only fed my cat Steve’s Quest chicken line, it would cost me around $1.40 a day. If I fed her Weruva’s chicken pate “press your lunch”, it would cost me around $3.60 a day. Not only is it cheaper, it’s more convenient. In some cases I can buy frozen raw cat food in bulk, defrost a few days worth in the fridge, and be set.

I wish I had trusted my instincts back then. He was the greatest cat I've ever known; Even winning over an outspoken non-catperson friend of mine with his gentle charm. They're vets to help the animals after all. So I can't believe that that's the only reason. But I also can't believe that they did reasearch and truly believe that the food they sell is good - because it's so easy to find the right info these days. All in all I'm just confused. My vet literally scolded me for having my cats on a 50/50 wet/raw diet. She said: "Now you're not thinking! Think about how cats eat in nature. They eat the whole animal - they chew it! When you feed a wat diet, they don't chew enough. The digestive proccess start with enzymes that they create when they chew and that is why wet food is bad. They need kibble to chew more." There's soooo many reasons why that statement is hilariously wrong. But it's not funny, because that's a supposedly well informed vet that said that. I've had many discussions with them and they say they do a lot of reaearch and they have no idea how I get the info I have. And I have no idea how they get theirs. It's so frustrating.

Ok im totally for raw diets. I have used them myself for years. That being said some of your information in Salmonella and bacterial concerns is dismissive and troublesome. Salmonella is an issue because of the source of the meat. It is typically spread through poor handling and improper temperature controls before the meat even reaches the store. This is not an issue in the wild(or much less of an issue) because meat doesn't have time to accumulate these bacteria in mass farming situations. Therefore the issue is with the source of the meat and that needs to be evaluated. If I cannot trust the source of the meat I use(any poultry in stores is not sold for raw use meaning it may contain Salmonella) there for I actually cook the poultry until it reaches a safe temp to kill those bacteria. Minimize loss of liquid and nutrients by using the cooking liquid in the food. Would love to see more discussed about sourcing meat safe for raw consumption

The problem with pre-prepared raw diets are that they're so unregulated. Here in the UK we've had issues with raw pre-prepared food giving cats bovine TB. I rescued two kittens that came from a house where the owner died leaving 15 cats...and watched one of them slowly die over two months, at the end being unable to both sleep and breath. They were both diagnosed with bovine TB...as we're all the other cats from the household. All of the other cats but the one we had left were put down...ours spent 6months + on antibiotics...and we had to be tested for TB. It was a living hell and never want to go through it again. It was confirmed that it was all from raw food...and theres a researched instance of a sold raw food infecting cats around the country. Not being able to afford to feed our cat human grade meat every day, I'll never feed commercial raw food as it's not regulated enough and the infection risk is too high for me. It's not about salmonella or conditions that they can get over....I don't just have a fear, I've lived it .

oh no, i'm so sorry to hear that! T^T while AAFCO claims it isn't a "regulatory agency" here in the states, raw food companies actually have to follow a much stricter guideline when it comes to food preparation compared to dry/wet food companies bc of the higher risk and stigma surrounding feeding raw. that isn't to say that they're perfect, but i've noticed that raw food companies definitely have less problems w/ recalls compared to dry food companies (although dry food companies have also been in business longer). i'm just glad that your cats are okay now!

I ran straight out after watching this video and bought raw food for my cats, not realizing the American Veterinary Association's position against feeding raw diets is based on strong evidence that it can cause food-borne illness in cats and the humans they live with. Even scooping these cats' litterboxes can transmit these foodborne illnesses. There is no evidence to show any positive influence on the health of cats. There's no vet conspiracy to suppress advice that cats should be eating raw diets, ffs. A lot of people commenting about raw meat as ideal cat diet have fetishized "clean" eating and natural products in general, not thinking about how unnatural it is for a domestic cat to eat a cow or pig raised in industrial farming, cooked or raw. Cats eating wild mice have to be treated regularly for parasites and diseases. As with all diets, there are pros and cons, and another con of raw food diets is that the food is do soft that it can promote dental decay. I am disappointed that there were no research findings presented in the video or in these comments. Scientific literacy is appallingly low. Please trust the people who have studied biology, chemistry, statistics, and animal medicine to make sound decisions on what's healthy for your pets - their expertise is the result of ongoing hard work, and access to research papers and the ability to understand them, rather than magical thinking.

I am so sorry you had to go through that! It must have been so horrible to see these beloved cats get terribly I’ll like this. While I am not sure about UK standards when it comes to commercial meat, I know the United States only recently put into law that commercial animals’ meat cannot be sold if the animals died due to illness. I assume the UK has not done that yet? But yes, this is the reason why I only use human-grade sources and make the food myself with minimal supplements. When I am traveling, I’ll let my kitties eat canned wet food because I am very paranoid about other raw food companies (commercial grade or human-grade). You never know how sanitary they are, and a lot of them are only “complete” in nutritional profile because of supplements. So many of them just have muscle meat, bone, heart, and liver, and then a ton of supplements, when they could have used other animal parts like spleens, kidneys, thymus, etc… to the point it feels like it is no different than canned wet food for kitties, to be honest. Thank you for warning others about the possible dangers!

I fed my last cat homemade raw and she had a long happy life of 20 years. I just adopted two kittens last month and I've got them on Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw (add water and it becomes a slurry) and these guys have so much energy compared to how sick they were when I got them. I'm hoping I can get another 20 years out of them. Raw for life!

Personally, I think freeze-dried is an unfortunate new trend in cat food and dog food. In the aquarium hobby, freeze-dried foods have been around for a very long time. It’s renowned garbage, and the freeze-drying process causes a devoid of nutrients, which is why purely frozen food and live foods became preferable. Freeze-dried, even when soaked, will still continue expanding in the animal’s stomach and often leads to bloating and constipation. I have a feeling after more long term research is provided on these freeze-dried cat food and dog foods, since the same process is being used to make them as with fish foods (same nuggets, cubes, and all), the studies will conclude the same.

My kitties fur is soft as velvet and shiny, their eyes are bright, and there hardly any poo in the litter boxes. Also, their pee is not as smelly! I have the auto closing pet bowls that reads their chips, so I weigh each cat's food for every feeding and know exactly how much they're eating. My only problem has been my veterinarian. Pet History My 16yr old out of the blue two years ago started having IBS/IBD I’ve taken him to several vets blood work, test for parasites, thyroid test, and bought expensive canned cat for from the vet. I was told to stop feeding him poultry or anything with feathers because cat are allergic. Now he is on Instinct limited ingredient 95% protein (Rabbit, Lamb, Deer varieties) plus I’ve ordered from a holistic animal company to add to his food such as Pure White Bentonite Clay,Pet Enzymes, Seaweed Calcium and Herbal Tincture every day. Plus I’m still giving him half of a steroid pill each day. His poop is now pudding consistent (no longer watery) and he doesn’t run to the litter box after each bite. But he smells the supplements and is now refusing to eat. Forgot to mention I have another cat that if he eats the food with supplements will get constipated. Now Question Your cat with IBD do you add anything to his raw diet?

@@toddledoodle no i don't add anything. she doesnt have any issues anymore that shes on human grade foods. she previously was drinking 2 wanton soup contairs a day & in the box trying to goto the bathroom. now she is fine. she mostly eats fish, mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines. n some veg. she was on behavior meds n peeing all over she doesnt do any of it anymore. she is like a viper and painfully attacks but less n less. i am too paranoid for raw chicken. i cant find chicken livers in a store yet... bc the fish have the bones n organs are whole bodied. i was horrified when an old vet showed me how to give my cat a pill n it worked. using your thumb on one side and pointer finger on the other, grab their cheek jaw to pop open their mouth and in a split second shove the pill way down, fast. i never would have thought to do that fear of choking or a vicious attack but it works n doesnt choke then. like real fast. prob do it from behind n under so the cats btwn your feet. im not a vet at all btw. pretty knowledgable tho. sounds like maybe the cat needs probiotics, very possible to balance the guy. worked on me, had activia when my stomach was in knots for a few yrs and is fine now. could be stress too. also, i havent in a while but would feed my cats rotisserie chicken. i'd carve it up a batch for me & the stuff for them, but didnt give them bones like that. seems kinda odd one has constipation & one loose poop. for the constipated one can add water to the food, for cats & people we absorb our liquids w food. i think the loose stool is like jackson said, the cats dig track is trying to get rid of something it doesnt digest well, maybe experiment w isolating ingredients 1 at a time and see if that can make a visible result? my ex had gurd for 10 yrs turns out was anxiety & he doesnt need medicine anymore. poor baby, i remember how awful it felt to always have a stomach ache, sucks. mine was stress. i would trust jacksons products over another brand, he sells stress relievers & the vitamins to add to a raw diet. let me know how it goes.

Thank you Jackson! Too many people are ignorant to the nutritional needs of their cats. People only feed their cats dry food for the convenience and low cost. I had a cat more than 20 years ago that was going to die from eating store bought cat food. He would vomit any cat food we gave him. Basically, his system could no longer process any store bought cat food. We took him to a holistic cat veterinarian who told us that he needed to switch to a raw meat diet or he would die. It took a lot of time and patience to switch him over to a raw diet, but it saved his life. Remarkably, he lived to be 18 years old. Due to that experience, I am CONVINCED that a raw meat diet is the absolute best for cats. I absolutely only feed my cats a raw meat diet :)

Hey, Jackson, just wanted to let you know how thankful we are that we watched this video and took your advice! After watching this series, we decided to switch our cats to a raw homemade diet. Our younger cat is a rescued singlet that my husband found abandoned at one week old. She tends to be a bit on the lazy side and was really putting on weight which was increasing her laziness. Our other cat is a very active cat and trying to do meet both their needs with commercial cat food was a struggle. Homemade raw food was the answer, we are just a few months in and our lazy girl has de-chonked considerably, she's much more playful and even gets the zoomies like a young cat should. Both cats have gained considerable lean muscle, their eyes are bright and their coats are incredibly soft and shiny. If they could type, they would thank you because they absolutely love the taste. I fully believe that making this switch has changed our cats lives for the better. Thanks again!

I actually find there is MORE information in Jackson's videos, but one difference is that the TV segment said that raw food is hard to get the different levels of nutrients right, when you're doing it yourself. In that segment (and what my own vet told me) was that we should be feeding our cats 80% wet food and 20% dry. I'm excited to find out more, as there's so much to learn and I want my two babies to be as healthy as can be!

But I was still contemplating homemade diet for my kitty. I'd love to eventually feed her with homemade, supplemented food once our baby has healed and we don't need to constantly take care of the spaying incision. This video has sealed the deal for me, especially since I've seen a supplement bottle for cats designed for homemade diets on the clinic's shelves.

I took my 15 years old baby to the vet and she was diagnosed with urinary tract. The doctor told us we should avoid grain free cat food. They said too much protein can be too much for senior cats. I've been studying a lot about cat nutrition and non of people online said cat food with grain can be a better option and it was mind blowing!! What I want to say is don't believe what random people say. Jackson was right that always go to a vet if something is wrong.

For anyone wondering the cost of feeding raw: Around $50 for the supplements (salmon oil being at $20-27 for 32oz but everything else between $5-10) It seems like quite a bit but it’s for multiple makings of raw food. For like 5-6 pounds of meat you can make a months worth. And won’t need to buy the supplements again, just the meat. I’d say for $10 worth of meat you can make quite a bit. I think it’s worth it because the best cheapest wet food you can buy would be like $15-20 for a months worth. You’d be saving $5-10 everytime which isn’t a lot but it adds up, and it’s healthier and you know everything that is in it! Don’t forget to warm it up when you feed it (in a bag in warm water, not microwave or actual heat)

I feed my cats raw food only. One of my cats is 8 and the other a senior, 15 years old . They love it ! Their fur is so soft and shiny. My senior girl actually feels more lean . I made the switch to raw foods to extend their lifetime, if processed food is bad for humans, then It’s bad for them too. at first I was intimidated because I thought it would be expensive but it’s actually cheaper to feed raw than it is to feed them the best commercial kibble out there . Highly recommend making the switch, it does take more work but it’s so with it. I meal prep for them once a week. Keeping food in the freezer and taking it out as I go. My dog also eats raw food and I have seen amazing progress with him as well. Great video Jackson !

I mix it myself after I had a plan made by an expert and somehow my budget isn't as tight as it used to be (I guess also because I don't throw away that much). I'm a total mess when it comes to calculating and computing so getting a plan from someone experienced was the best choice. Furthermore it needed some time for me to get used to it but it was worth it! Me and my 3 cats (one was only on dry food one year ago - so seeing her enjoy her healthy meal is sooo good) are doing fine! :D

I never thought I'd be able to afford to feed my cats raw, but always had guilt knowing that I *SHOULD* be. I have six of them and when I got them all, I didn't have the foresight or knowledge that dry food was bad, so I didn't factor in how expensive it could be to feed so many of them a wet diet, let alone raw. But the tidbit about the Alnutrin will literally be a life-changer for them and I'm getting started this upcoming week. Which is perfect, because one of my boys was slowly inching toward obesity which I never would want. Thank you for being the best.

I just recently ( a week ago ) started my male cat ( albino , has cardiomyopathy ) on BARF ( raw food ) , and I can already see major improvements. His vet said that he would have to be on renal food for the rest of his life because his kidney values . My cat used to throw up in the middle of the night / early morning after eating because of heartburn , and especially if he ate dried food . It would come up minutes after . Since I started him on raw food , this hasn’t happened . His stool is tiny and less frequent as before he would poop at least twice a day. Now it’s one small stool in 1 to 1 1/2 days. He has so much more energy and I mean A LOT more to the point that I have to tire him out at night so he’ll leave my other cat alone 😂😂😂. I buy ready made Barf meals from this website here in Germany and they’re especially made for cats with kidney problems. . I’m 100% convinced that it’s the best for our cats!

So glad that you are drawing attention to the support of raw food diets! I can’t agree with with you more. Our 3 cats have been on a raw diet for 2.5 years now. We were initially drawn to it because our eldest girl had a weight problem (her favourite activity in the world is eating). She has lost 2.5 pounds so far. Our other girl developed mega colon at a really young age because I wasn’t properly educated on what to feed her when I first got her and fed her dry. For a cat that doesn’t like water, either still or fountains, she ended up developing constipation. I tried the vet recommended diets which only made the problem worse. So, I took the leap of faith with our vet clinic who was also able to offer me nutritional consultation and switched to raw. She is obviously not cured, but she is so much more comfortable now. Our third little buddy was recently diagnosed with diabetes and he’s been on raw this whole time. He’s 14 and I don’t know that he’ll be able to get off the insulin, but we did a consult with the vet team who said to keep him on raw and we ended up adding a fresh water fish oil that is also supplied by the same company that supplies our raw food. His weight is perfect (always has been) and vet’s opinion is that he likely would have developed diabetes at a younger age if he wasn’t on raw. We are lucky where we live that we are able to source our raw food from a semi-local producer who suppliers food across western canada, so we have never had to make a “recipe” ourselves, just purchase a 25 lb box of goat meat patties each month or so, which contain all of the cartilage, bone bits, and basically everything else that isn’t fur or organ meat, plus a bottle of oil. The only sacrifice is the freezer space lol. Would love to see you dig into the controversial topic of the deals that shady pet food companies have struck with vet clinics to get them to recommend their food, the whole situation is very upsetting.

@@jaydencparker4968 oh for sure. I’ve gone over things with my vet, and they actually said there’s a local place I could send the food to have tested, but I opted out due to the cost. Apparently the biggest concern with homemade food is taurine content for heart health, and the effect of too little taurine content wouldn’t be noticable right away, so as long as you’ve got that component good, you should be solid. Most of the other vitamins are still important, but not as crucial. I would like to share a quote from Dr. Lisa Pierson from almost 20 years ago now when I contacted her about raw diets, "I would like to be less busy taking care of ill cats from the lousy diets that Man insists on feeding to this species." I think that says it all about how much she cares and advocates for cats. 20 years ago, raw diets were almost a career ending topic for vets and she was pushing that topic into the mainstream even back then.
