Turkey Cat Food that'll drive your cats nuts... and how to make it!

Want to make your own Homemade Cat Food with Turkey and save a TON of Money? If so, this video is chock full of every ingredient & turkey-related tips for cooking that you'll need.
How long do we cook the turkey? Will cats eat turkey if they're used to chicken? Do we need to add taurine to Turkey when feeding our cats? How many servings of cat food will one turkey make? Do we wash the turkey before cooking it? What vegetables can cats eat and what should we limit? Is it better to make your own homemade cat food or buy cat food from the store?
Look, there are a thousand questions related to making turkey cat food, but only one way to solve them - to provide answers. And that's where Joanna Trautman comes in. As part of her How to Really Cook series, Joanna breaks down all the steps you need for success and talks you through what your options are, why she does what she does, and what to avoid. Her bite-sized chunks of information makes it easy to digest while your mind stays active the entire lesson as you learn about your cats and turkey while you cook.
Below is an ingredient list and supply list: (I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself!)
I get a commission every time you purchase a product through my affiliate link below.
To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
One whole Turkey (I used a 14lb turkey for this cat food recipe)
White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 4 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice.
Pumpkin - I used roasted pumpkin (homegrown), but canned pumpkin puree will also work. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar. With 14 lbs of turkey, I use about 6-8 cups. This is really good for cat digestion and urinary tracts.
Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: amzn.to/3Sugr9t Ground flaxseed: amzn.to/48FE844
Nutritional Yeast Flakes - for this cat food recipe I used 1 cup - amzn.to/3OaeQ5W
Green Beans - for this cat food recipe I used one 2-lb bag (frozen)
Eggs - for this cat food recipe I used 8 large eggs (whole)
Toasted Wheat Germ - for this cat food recipe I used 1/2 cup. amzn.to/3u26feQ
Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy cat's red blood cells. Yikes! It's a short ingredient list, relative to commercial cat food.
Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
High Power Blender: Here is the one I use: amzn.to/47KGNrW
Refurbished Blender (this is what I ordered 8 years ago and still going strong): amzn.to/4binrO2
Vitamix Dry Grains Container: amzn.to/3Od7eja
Food Processor: amzn.to/3S5scBL (this wasn't nearly as effective as the blender)
16 qt stock pot: amzn.to/495mBlA
24 qt stock pot: amzn.to/3HOieQB
Mesh Strainer: amzn.to/3U9hlJs
Please comment and let me know how it goes and by all means please share it so others can start making their own homemade cat food with turkey or chicken as well!
Our 8 cats give it 2 paws up with a Me"wow" for extra credit on the Turkey!

I applaud anyone who uses raw OR cooked meats for their little carnivores. Moving away from processed food is awesome! I personally feed raw meat but I have only love for anyone who make cooked diets and avoid processed food. I'm not sure why some people are so upset about cooked diets, raw does not work for everyone, their location, their family or their comfort zone. People relax, as long as the kitties are healthy and eating a balanced diet, it's all good, cooked or raw. I love your videos! One of my cats favourite meals is one with bone broth all over it. The broth from that turkey is packed with nutrients and minerals :D PS - I also use pumpkin in my cats food as well, they love it's sweet flavor

This is a very good video, ignore any negative comments, as they will always be there. We had 5 cats when I lost my wife, 11 years ago. One lived to age 20, her sister to age 18. I am down to one left, but have never stopped searching for healthier ways to feed them. I am going to try a scaled down version of this, or the chicken recipe. I need to start small, to confirm my baby girl will like it. Thanks for taking the time to post this, I know it is a lot of work.

I just found whole turkey on sale for $0.69/lb, so I came online to check the nutrition and found your wonderful video. I do a similar homemade cat food with whole chicken. I roast a couple of chickens and a bunch of thighs, then after removing the meat, I throw the carcasses/bones and pan drippings into the instant pot, adding water to cover. I pressure cook for two hours, at which point many of the smaller bones just squish between the fingers. The epiphyses (knobby ends) of the larger bones are also soft, and I pinch them off, then scoop as much of the marrow out as possible from the larger, more brittle femurs. I put the brittle bone shafts back in the broth and add a package of hearts and gizzards, plus whatever organs came with the birds and about a cup of pre-soaked (overnight) millet (to mimic what might be in a bird or rodent prey's stomach), and pressure cook for another 30 minutes. I discard anything still brittle, then throw all the softened bones, a couple of hearts and gizzards into a blender with some of the broth and liquify. I chop the remaining hearts and gizzards, and all the rest of the meat. I steam-scramble 6-8 eggs with a few chicken livers, then mix everything in a huge dish pan (saved only for cat food prep!) I sometimes add freshly baked or canned pumpkin, and sometimes some cooked lentils (my boy loves lentils, little weirdo!) Then I fill about a hundred+ of these little rectangular food storage containers I got from Dollar Tree, and I've got about 4 months worth of single-serving meals prepped SUPER CHEAP! I alternate morning/evening meals with high-quality Ziwi brand canned food, and once a week he gets homemade fish-head stew (that is NOT FUN to make, I do it in a giant crockpot set on the patio outside, and have to use bare hands to seperate meat (and eyeballs, his fave) from a thousand seperate SHARP skull bones, but also very cheap and SUPER nutritious!)

Gosh I would love to do this but I feed about 30 ferals everyday. I am going to start incorporating some home cooked a few nights a week. Might even start on Sunday. I am concerned about the bones. Can I just do bone broth? Same nutrients?

  • @JoannaTrautman

    @JoannaTrautman

@@chasethecat3839 good for you, feeding those cats. Bone broth isn’t quite the same, but still nutritious. Bone broth is the liquid that you cook everything down in, but the bones are physically removed prior to storage or serving. You may want to watch my turkey cat food videos, as I use a blender to incorporate the bones. You can use the same technique with chicken bones. Thanks for watching!

@chasethecat3839 I usually roast all of my meat (with a few cups of water in the pan), then remove all of the meat. I put the bones/carcass plus the pan liquids in the Instant Pot and top off with water. I cook for a few hours on high pressure, and the bones mostly turn to mush. I can pinch the ends off the femurs, and if the shafts are still at all brittle, they go back in the pot for another hour. Then bones, cartilage, epipheses, and broth go into the blender. I used to have my stepmother's Vitamix that quickly reduced it all to a soft slurry, which got poured into the minced meat. When I'm doing several whole chickens plus a couple of trays of thighs, I don't add every bone. I'll do as above, but discard the brittle femur shafts after pinching off the epipheses (ends) and scraping out some marrow. There's plenty of calcium and minerals from all the smaller bones, ribcage & spines/necks. I also look for big packages of chicken feet, which make an incredibly nutritious bone broth due to all the cartilage and collagen. They can be boiled or pressure cooked, then blended.

Great videos and recipes! The only thing I would add to the process is this: once all the meat is removed from the chicken or turkey, break the set-aside, remaining bones and RETURN these to the broth pot; and simmer the broth for an additional hour or so. This releases the last of the marrow into the broth and enriches the final product and the flavor. Then just pour the broth into a sieve (held over a large bowl or pot) to remove all of the bones and dispose of these. Then proceed with the process of adding back the meat and adding the rice and veggies for the final simmer

The stray cat I’ve been feeding since last winter through spring, brought me her kittens few weeks ago. Bought them all the cat food they need and more but it’s very expensive, especially the treats and I decided to add home made cat food with their regular bought food to their diet. Made it yesterday and they love it. Used chicken thights and wings, boiled them for hours till they fell off the bones, separately salmon and some other type of fish, pumpkin and rice. For liquid I used the chicken broth. In the morning when they came to my home one kitten went straight to the bowl where the home made cat food was in even though it was a hard lump for being all night in the fridge, he kept trying to eat it the best way he could. Hours later they came back to my home and ate everything was left. Thank you for sharing the recipe and so many great tips, you inspired me to be a better cat mom while also saving money. God bless!

My cat specialist vet is 100% against a raw food diet. She has treated far too many cats with food poisoning from raw food. Also FYI, there’s a large pumpkin farm in my town. • @JoannaTrautman

    @JoannaTrautman

    2 жыл бұрын

OK - so here's the deal. That is a 24 qt commercial stock pot (it is available anywhere that sells commercial cookware), and the strainer was originally from a turkey fryer pot of the same volume (I actually scrubbed through that turkey fryer pot - it was a disappointment, but the strainer is great.) If you don't have a stock pot that big, I wouldn't go out and get one just for this unless you regularly cook for large groups (canine, feline, and/or human) - it is a huge piece of cookware. You have a few options: 1) a smaller pot - this turkey will fit in a 16 qt, but the turkey must rest on its end 2) roast the bird at 375 F for 4 hours or so to get the bird at least partially cooked - you will complete the cooking process in the boiling part to prepare the bones for pureeing. At this point the bird is much easier to separate into pieces that will easily fit in a smaller pot, just make sure to save all the juices from the roasting pan and add those to the pot as well. 3) Cut up the raw turkey - removing the legs, thighs, and wings should be enough to get it into a smaller pot. I hope this helps! Joanna

Wouldn't it be easier to roast the turkey, then mix water in the drippings and cook everything in the roasting pan? It would be easier to remove the meat and isolate the bones to ground, and then add it to the pan with the liquid too. Plus if you're using it to mix the mash up, it would save on dishes.

This inspired me to make my own cat food at home. However, her method was way too messy and complicated for my brain. I make mine with organ meats, salmon and a few simple ingredients in about 5 minutes. I use coconut oil, raw egg, toasted and ground egg shells. I also supplement with a good grain free dry kibble.

18:20 - that is TONS of rice, remember it's 150g carbs in 1 cup, so you are adding 600 - 1200g carbohydrates for 1000g protein (whole turkey). Plus pumpkin, green beans - your wet food has MORE carbs than protein.

Your recipes are great and its obvious you have done a lot of time consuming and good research. Do you have any boneless recipes with eggshell calcium for senior cats? I have two senior cats that I want to start reducing the phosphorus content of their food to help protect their kidneys. The high phosphorus content of bones adds to kidney problems but the manufactured diets for CKD cats are expensive and not that good. ( I have lost two elderly cats to kidney disease and they were both on commercial wet canned food) I currently use Alnutrin completer with eggshell calcium because I am making small batches for four cats to make sure their food meets the AAFCO nutrient standards but am researching how to do it by purchasing my own supplements. There isn't a lot of information for low phosphorus diets for senior cats available.

I actually believe majority of cat owners should NOT be making their own raw diet for cats. Of course there are plenty of people who really understand and know what they are doing but I know some cat owners who insisted on making raw cat food and their poor cats got so sick..like almost died!!! If anyone has any doubts in their ability to make "safe " raw food...then just be safe for cats sake at least and cook the food. That's my opinion formed from watching friends ..many friends too fail miserably with a raw diet

Just watched your chicken cat food vid and you stated not to use seasonings especially salt. In this vid I believe that was a brined turkey. Fresh turkey contains about 55 mg of sodium per a 4 ounce serving. The turkey in this video I believe has a sodium content close to 4 times that for a 4 ounce serving. What would you say is the sodium content of each portion you feed to each cat daily for this preparation?

My 4 years old cat has had the same issues, throwing up (everyday a few times) within sometimes one minute after she finished her Fancy Feast food (this is her main food) or Friskies. Especially, when wet food is eaten together with dry food (she does not chew her food, swallow the whole piece of dry food). I am swithching her to baby foods (turkey in gravy, chicken in gravy) and human's light tuna in water (mix tuna with the baby food turkey or chicken). Sometimes, I mix no more than half of her portion with the canned food and she seems to be ok but no whole piece dry food (I grind them up and sprinkle very little only once in a while on her food). No throwing up almost 5 days in a row, which is amazing.

I thought it was pretty straight fwd so all Gung-Ho, I did so from memory (staring with a 12lb bird) Somehow I only ended up with 21.5 cups 😬 Idk what I did wrong (did not use) bones but thought it would make a lot more! Now I'm questioning how much I should be feeding them....wondering if the calories are more concentrated? Currently they are 100% wet food at about 1.25 (5.5oz) cans per day each. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thank you!
