How did you get that bottom out?

Good for you tackling this job yourself. Cat dealership will kill you on labor charges. I realize there isn’t much room but you would think they would at least give you a bigger access panel. Good job my friend.

to install the starter the challenge is the bottom bolt. Service manual says you need to remove the radiator and exhaust to access I questioned if that even works. Cut the starter in half about 3" back from where it bolted to the engine with a carbide blade in a reciprocating saw. It worked removed the bolt and just reinstalled with one bolt like the starter in this video was.

Thankyou so much for this video, I think I have a short somewhere on my 304. I have an intermittent fault, Click no crank issue and a blown 50amp fuse near the battery or the Starter Motor fuse in the fuse box below the seat blows, then sometimes its fine. I spent a while looking for the starter, gave up, then hit up You Tube. I also have a leak in the heater coil, so now also know how to get to that. Fingers crossed I have the same short circuit you had and I can get this wrapped up. I'll put the fix on my channel when I get it done.

Not much of a video I have there but I hope it helped you. I owned a Starter and Alternator Shop for 25 years. From your description sounds like it could very well be a shorted wire going to the starter solenoid possibly. Good luck. Rotor, Hi, so useful. Pain in the butt getting the access panels off. Slightly different arrangement on my 304, but access is behind the seat. As you suggested I found the issues, the main starter motor wire, the heavy duty one, had worn through as you had found, occasionally grounding and I also found that the solenoid wire, from the ignition was loose. All fixed now, fingers crossed no more issues. I ended up bypassing the leaking heater coil, too much hassle and cost to fix it properly. Thanks again for your video
