CASTING A SILVER RING (open sand casting)

So in this video I'm casting a silver ring, but instead of casting in an enclosed environment. Were casting in an open mold.

    To save my silver when I have that much excess I usually saw as close as I can and then file. Having some material from the same cast is always useful when doing repairs or resizing.

    This was the method I used when I was 16 over a decade ago. Except I used baking clay and wire. Would melt the wire right into the ring impression. Problem with the open face is that I always seemed to have issues with it being mishapened like in this video with shallow and excess bits. Then I started carving out rings and such in soapstone for duplicity, but unfortunately I didnt have a jig or router to create a level bottom so I still had shallows. you had to make sure the pieces were beveled or conical or you couldnt get them out. Eventually I saw people just bending half round wire and welding the ends together and it made me feel like I had wasted my time with all the grinding, but seeing these vids made me realize I wasnt far off. Wish I had the tools to makesure my rings were plane.

    is there a reason you prefer to use flour? my dad works with aluminum and he uses lime instead, that way you avoid the fire wich causes bubles to form and can ruin the casting. also if you are having trouble with the metal not flowing like you want you can pre-heat the sand with the torch, that way it cools slower and the metal has a chance to flow to every place. anyway, great video!

    I haven't even considered using lime, I'll look into it. But yeah flour was the first thing I tried and has been effective since so I've just continued to use it.

    its much easier to grind rings and small jewelry with a file if the file is secured in place in a vice, and the work is dragged across the file. Its also easier on the hands.

    I wonder if this works with cuttlefishbone casting too. thats one of the big problems, you cant get a complete cuttlefishbone pattern on a ring, cause you always have to cut off the sprue and theres just so much you can do to hide it with gravers and texturing tools

    Hey man nice job, I enjoy watching your videos. I have a question for you. I’ve been dabbling with casting aluminum but haven’t had much luck with copper. Eventually I’d like to make a silver ring like this video here. I’ve been using a MAP gas torch but* as far as I can tell it’s not burning hot enough to melt the copper. I was wondering if you had any tips before I invest in trying silver

  • @natecharleswatches

    @natecharleswatches

    5 жыл бұрын

    Silver is much nicer to work with compared to copper and aluminium. Lower melting point and flows quite nicely. i doubt my torch would manage to melt copper to the point I could pour it. As for investing in using silver I would say go for it, silver is relatively cheap (28p per gram). I would advise using an adequate amount of flux/borax to help melt the silver down, and once molten, allow it to simmer before pouring (don't know the correct term for it but its when the metal begins spinning in a ball), make sure to pour in one quick action for the best cast possible.

    So if the porosity is really bad I would melt it down and try again, when you have a little bit of porosity what I've done sometimes is drill through it, plug it with silver wire and solder it

    FunWithFire I have both the petrobond sand and the delft clay sand. Air flow is a factor Temp is a factor Trying repeatedly will get the result after awhile. Some videos show a hotter torch. A good torch is the berzomatic T 86oo or 46oo electric start torch, use with the yellow can map pro. The last few melts I’ve used my little smith torch with the melting tip, that works real good. The metal will flow like water when the temp is right. If the air is too big all the metal will flow through the mold. (Closed mold) Porosity isn’t real bad if you really pack the sand with a hammer and load it slowly, even on the sides and take care to pack tightly. The holes are random but most around the spru or pour area. Hopefully this will help someone somewhere.

    @@natecharleswatches I really like the accessibility of this, of being able to see where the silver is going when you pour it. Great for a beginner, like me, who only ever sand cast once (closed cast) in a workshop. Some people, especially me, really need to take baby steps. I completely take the point that there is lots of finishing work to do, which is time consuming. The only other open sand casting methods I’ve been able to find is for flat items, often larger and different metals. I saw that native Navajo used this method and wonder if they were the people who came up with this. In my workshop the facilitator mentioned people once making casting huge pipes on the beach in this way. That, I would love to see!
