THe number stickers and cigarette smoke must indicate it as been used as a MIDI controler, most likely a guitarist using a MIDI controles rig or a MIDI guitar

That would have been a good theory, but the machine has no MIDI connectivity. It can however sample sounds from internal microphone on the top panel or the dynamic microphone and tape inputs on the right side wall. And it has loop/delay effect modes. And the sampled sounds can be pitched with keyboard or played at original pitch with big pads. And it has a few drumloops. In fact, the pitch neutral key for external samples is A4, which is marked with a sticker that reads "10". This should give a clue towards the purpose the machine was used for, but hell if i can figure it out. Also rumour has it, being the first dirt cheap sampling keyboard may have made it popular in Jamaica.

I noticed that if you look closely, you can see the actual numbers printed on the plastic below the keys, so I can only guess that they were too small for the previous owner to read, so they just made larger prints of the numbers for better reading.

I absolutely love the content you put on both of your channels. I've always had an interest in outdated technology but i have no idea where to start learning about it. Your information is both insightful and interesting, thanks so much for creating these videos. c: The Casio SK-5 was my very first keyboard when i was a little kid. my older brother gave it to me in the early 90's and i fell in love with it. i would go around the house pressing the Lion Roar button everywhere and sampling various noises and voices to make songs. I've probably still got something recorded on the old thing. I'm so glad you were able to do what you could to this keyboard to restore it. It's good to know there are people out there that care about restoring older pieces of electronic history.

The piano sound is very similar to the one I have in my Hohner MSE-1 module (a rebranded Casio CSM-1), the choir, vibraphone and pipe organ sounds are exactly the same as in the MA130, which was my first keyboard, which I got for Christmas back in 1991 or 1992. I was 2 or 3 back then.

What can I say, another fantastic video. It's always satisfying to see the tear down, cleaning, and restoration of old electronics. I will say that aside from soap and water to get rid of the smoke smell, you can place the cleaned and disassembled parts into a plastic tote that has a decent sealed lid. Then throw several dryer sheets in there with it, seal it up, and let it sit for a week. I restored an Atari Jaguar using this method, and it was absolutely caked in smoke residue - afterwards, it was nearly perfect. This would work great for that Casio bag as well. Side note, yes, the plastic does come out smelling a bit like the dryer sheet but that quickly wears away when it spends a little time in the open air, and then you're back to having no offensive smell.

Great find! I can't believe you got the bag for it too, that's amazing. Cigarette smoke absorbed into the plastic is the worst! I'd wet sand the texture off of the case and then polish it with Novus if it bugs you. Replacing the eprom sounds amazing! I didn't know people did that. I always thought it would be fun to take the drum sound rom out of a Casio keyboard and make a drum machine based around it...sort of like the RZ-1, but not really. Anyway, good stuff!

SmaMan, why? They're just sleeves, they don't have any paper on them or anything water soluble. So what you do, you put them into a container with dish soap for a day or two, and when you take them out and wash them off, they won't have any smoke smell any longer! Then they can perform their designated duty.

I had one of these 28-30 years ago!!! Recording samples and reversing them, adding effects to it, then reversing the sound again we thought was some kind of super effects. Probably had the same result without reversing 2x. We tried to use it "Musically" but it was very toy-ish sounding for most of the things we did. Me and my friends had loads of fun with this thing though. Good memories hehe. Mine didn't have a bag that I recalled.

Hi, so, marathonning your channel on accident, and I know this was like two and a half years ago, but I'm a professional theatrical costume technician (sounds cooler than it is), and you can get smoke smells out of fabric and anything mildly porous with roughly a 1:3 ratio of vodka and water. Spray it on till it's slightly damp, let it evaporate, and it takes the smell with it. Also works on sweaty actor BO, pet urine, and the lovely "we don't know why it smells like this, but the whole storage unit smells this way, trust us, it's fine." I've heard you can use rubbing alcohol, too. Someone I talked to said they used denatured alcohol, but the bitterants in it or the dyes or something ended up staining some expensive rental costume light green. Anyway, no idea if you're still having this problem, but I decided to share in case you are, or run into it again. Also, I recently came into possession of the Nissin C-16, which is just the Casio SK-1 made keytar and themed after Cup Noodles, so I was really excited to see you do this specific keytar. Helped me out so much! Thank you!

Also, when I got my PSS-570, I spent a good four hours removing just one octave of note-name stickers with tons of goo-gone and a razor blade. Never seen stickers so baked into something. The moment I saw the stickers on this keyboard, it was like having a war flashback.

Thanks so much for posting these videos! It's a huge help to have a guide for taking apart and restoring my own keyboards - one question, did you run into any issues with getting either the rubber membranes or the fabric padding inserts on the keyboard shell wet when you were cleaning the parts, or did it cause any damage afterwards? The plastics on one of my keyboards are filthy and could use a good soak but I'm a little worried about getting some of the non-plastic materials that are attached wet.

I used to have this exact model. Didn't know how to play piano, so I only messed around with single notes, drum pad rhythms and the percussion keys. Good times!

I bought a big boxed PC game a few months ago that had a smoke smell. I just put some bounce dryer sheets in there, put the game into a large ziplock bag, and that got rid of the smell. You might be able to do something like that with the inside of the bag.

I remember having a Casio sk1 as a wee lad and oh the fun we had with the built in mic and voice sampling lol.

I had this same keyboard as a child. I remember the dog sample was the one I played with the most and it annoyed my mother to no end. She hid from me for a week and the next time I saw it, my father had screwed it to the wall of the barn. We had a young horse at the time who would press his noise and upper lip on it, it kept him from chewing the wood out of boredom. He was rather attention hungry.

Love your videos, I have learned so much from you, thanks for taking the time to share the information. I have a Yamaha SHS-200 with a few broken keys and I have not been able to find the part number or replacement keys even on Syntaur and other similar sites. I think the Yamaha SHS-10 has the same keys but I cannot confirm as I do not have one. Can you provide any advice on how to find the replacement keys I need?

Hi, I think you mentioned not using the sampler side of this keyboard. When I had mine I found you could make some nice "synthetic" sounds by zero contact with the mic by either flicking your finger very close to it to create a waft of short air across it, or by using my finger nail clicking over the plastic over it. It would create various types of "square" tones. It took some practice and trying different ways but made for very unique sounds. I wish I still had mine. I lent it to my brother once and he made a good song using samples from Nightmare on Elm Street and his own voice :D, I remember he used the "you are all my children now" line and I think the Disco rhythm and the lion and dog sounds. Silly I know but good fun back in the day.

A few useful tips/techniques from experience; Rather than WD40 or alcohol/methylated-spirits I've found white/spirits in most cases quickly dissolves the gum from stickers without affecting plastic components (& also where foam has been glued, which I always remove as old foam will continue to disintegrate). Invest in an ultrasonic-cleaner for all those smaller parts, PCBs, & screws, etc., especially as they are so much more affordable these days. Doesn't have to as big as my 14L unit (can clean vinyl records!), but being able to clean at least half a circuit at a time is quite useful! Once washed, fabric/vinyl bags will eventually lose their smell if you leave them hanging outside long enough, but hang them in the shade in summer though!

For the smoke smell in the bag try Febreze, that usually works for me. It shouldn't damage the thing, but if that's a concern try it on a spot that won't be seen first!

I have a casio sk1 which is a great little sampling keyboard too. There are a few other mods you can do for this range of keyboards that can be quite interesting!
