Carving a Comfort Bird out of Cherry! BeaverCraft Comfort Bird Carving Kit

I've always wanted to try out Beavercrafts Comfort Bird Wood Carving Kit and decided to whittle one myself! It was a fun, but challenging project.
If you get this kit, I suggest starting with the basswood block, the cherry was a little harder to cut than I thought it would be!

@@quandaledingle7092 I wouldn't recommend it. For safety reasons. It depends on what type of knife you have access to. Woodcarving knives tend to be made from harder steel, so it can keep an edge better. A couple things things that the knife needs: Good handle/grip for comfort and control Tough blade, it must not bend easily Hard enough steel that is can hold an edge well (comfort, control) but not too hard so that the blade is brittle. Short blade (long blade usually means less control, long blade blocks view, more risk when you lose control). What is good enough depends on your goals (rough end result requires less). Softer wood is easier to cut and arguably safer. But it is harder to get a nice smooth result with soft woods. If you want to try anyway. Lovely carvings have been made with a decent pocket knife. But use common sense, be careful.

I bought this kit after watching one of your video where you said you are gonna give it a try! Glad to hear that the wood is really hard cause I'm having such hard time whittling it and I just thought I was really horrible at it. Thank you for saying you don't have to be perfect with the cuts. It really helped! Thank you for your contents! It's fun to have a new hobby though I'm really bad at it.

There are 2 blocks in the kit, cherry and basswood. The basswood is lighter in color and much easier to carve than the cherry.

I’m working on this exact kit right now and man, is it painful. I can only work on it an hour at most and it’s been about 2 days. I can’t saw off the pieces like you did but it’s taking so long. I’m excited to finish this bird and then move onto your beginner ideas! I might also need to find a better wood that’s easier to cut too haha. Thanks for this video!

Give your hands a rest every 20 minutes to let the tendons recover themselves. You can damage them if you don't keep them lubricated inside the tendon sheaths

I gotta start getting into wood carving. Mum bought me some chisels a few Christmases ago which are intimidating as hell to sharpen. I definitely messed up the edge of one of them even after all the pre-reading and videos. Also the main problem is not having a workbench and clamp because it's the kind that needs a hammer, rather than just knives.
