Had to go the hospital twice after splitting my hand open while whittling, wish I had found this video first. You've re-inspired me to get back into whittling, so thank you.

Oh goodness! Having safety gloves is important for myself as I sometimes loose track of where my hands are the more I focus in on my projects. While they arent 100% protection, they have made what could have been serious injuries to minor cuts just needing a bandaid

I completed my first project! I carved the bark off a twig and made an albino snake!
I'm a pro at making pointy sticks.
I like that you gave the pros and cons for each of the options and also gave sources for where to find equipment as well as sources for information. This is the most complete beginners guide I've ever watched and I appreciate the heck out of you for doing this. Thank you so much.
the only time i ever whittled was about 3 weeks ago, I made a little spatula for raticide paste for some traps, using a box cutter and a tiny scrap of fir from the neighbor's attic. Those 5 minutes of whittling calmed me more than any meds or meditation technique my therapist suggested. now I'm all about watching youtube and buying a knife and whittling the crap of any wood I find while imagining said wood to be my boss
Finally, i found someone who goes in detail of the what and how on whittling. Thank you so much. I will follow your advices and tutorials in order to learn how to do whittling properly.

Cheaper blades are good for beginners because they teach you how to Sharpen your tools. Sharpening is one of the most important things you can learn if you want to enjoy working with wood whether it be whittling or anything else. This is my advice for anybody who wants to start with woodwork.
I whittled a wooden coat hanger that i could place into metal holes at work and keep my jacket clean. I used pieces that chipped off pallets in the warehouse and i went through quite a few of them. Seeing this now. I’m seeing a lot of the techniques you used are very similar to what i would do and it almost came naturally with doing it so much. Just thought that was interesting.

You can usually figure some stuff out on your own by actively practicing it yourself with repeated practice, which is how many of us learned the craft to begin with :)
I tried to get into whittling a while back and didn’t get very far, sharpening was extremely intimidating. Watching these videos has gotten me excited to break it back out and get into it again, thanks so much for these there was a serious lack of content this good for this hobby.

HI Brandon I used to sharpen freehand exclusively and still do some. But I bought a lansky set that has 4 different stones and is simple as pie and will get you a razor sharp edge easy they are abou.t the same price as a good whetstone

Screw you so much. Arrived at this video wanting just some mindless entertainment, and now I have a full cart on Amazon and will be trying to make the little fox. You've converted someone who had not even thought about doing this in the first place 😂 Joke aside, lovely video. Thanks a lot for it 💜

Just ordered my first kit from Amazon, going to build wood toys for my son. Your video is teaching me a lot going to keep watching thank you.
My grandpa made my whittling knives all by hand , love from the UK !!
im 14 and from young age i was interested in woodworking and making things from wood. this video motivated me to start so i will ask my parents ect. ect. and i will hopefully start.
i just want to be a grizzled old cowboy carving wood by a fire while i tell my apprentice my dark past
I do not know why this popped up in my recommended but this just brought back a memory of me whittling in my Pappy's garage while he worked. I couldn't have been older then 8 or 9? Think I'm gonna pick this up and surprise him with something for his birthday

Man i just want to say thanks to you (and the YT algorithm). I had my great grandfather‘s carving tools ( ~50 Stubai and Cherry tools) laying around since I was born and allways wanted to learn whittling. My first few pieces are allready done and many more are on the way, just because of your high quality contet! Thanks a lot and cheers from Austria!

all the other beginners guides realy arent actualy easy until i saw this channel thank you so much keep up the good work
My great grandfather taught me to whittle. He always had had his pocket knife and would whittle sticks on a bench swing, while we played in the yard. He would say, “Whistle while you whittle.” 😊
I love when someone can make an intro video and can just clearly say dont cheap out in these areas, these are less critical, and make getting started feel doable. This IS that video! Thank you!
Just bought a beaver craft kit. feeling more confident after watching this video. :)
I went into this blind after needing something to do with my hands while out camping. I made a whetstone out of a river stone I’d ground flat and it served me well enough to whittle a bird out of young wood. This is a big step up from what I was doing, and I’m excited to learn more. Thanks for the valuable info! 😁
You are so good at telling people the things they don't even know they should ask... You are truly a teacher. You are a scholar. You, specifically you, could teach _anything_ you wanted to. Thank you for teaching us about this hobby.
Incredible tutorial! Most in depth yet not overly complicated, and comprehensive guide I've seen!
It's good that you show your 'war carving' wounds. I have been carving for better than 25 years on and off, and always find new ways to get cut while carving in places I thought never existed...lol! It's not that carving is a risky thing, it's that 'human nature' of bravado takes over. Silly things when you drop your guard. I think because I take my time now and more so 'a little wiser', I don't get 'war carving' wounds as much.
I’ve always wanted to try my hand at whittling but never knew there were this many things to know about it! Honestly made me more interested in trying it out
Just as I was thinking about 3d art and getting into whittling, I found this video... Is this a message from the master woodcarvers?
Fantastic guide.I finally understand how to use a strop . I especially like the sharpening section since having a sharp knife is essential.
Growing up I was always curious about whittling but I had no idea where to start or how it works. Your videos are amazing. Tyyy
you've inspired me to try whittling again :) I tried once but I had zero experience and I couldn't find things that I wanted to make. but ur tutorials are so helpful and not too complicated and I love all ur little animals and things, so I'd love to try making them too. ty for putting all I need to know in one video, makes it easy to go back at refresh everything haha
Thank you so much for this! I've been wanting to get into whittling but there aren't enough videos talking about what you need to get and do in order to get started. This was so helpful and you've earned a new subscriber :D
Thanks for a very thorough class on all the basics in about 33 minutes
Just ordered my first pieces, I love this channel and been following it for a while. Since I realized I spend most of my free time at home, this seems like a very relaxing thing to do when I don't feel like playing guitar.
I am fast approaching retirement age and have wanted to get into carving for a long time but didn’t really know where to start. Your how-to videos are invaluable. I bought a set of Flex Cuts based on your reviews. I look forward to getting started. Keep up the great work.
As a Cub Scout leader, I feel much more prepared to teach my Bear Scouts knife safety and help them earn their whittling chip! I’ll be including this video in the materials and guide for parents too! Thanks

Thank you for this video. I've wanted to whittle since I was a kid but never knew where to start. I spent the evening looking at knives on Amazon and after ordering a set (glad I decided to go with the Beaver Craft ones and not something cheaper) I decided I better get an Idea of how to start and this was perfect, I'm much more confident about getting started than I was.
Can't wait to start doing this it seems so fun and relaxing

I was fortunate enough to inherit several of my grandfather’s woodcarving knives, many of them made by himself, a few by various knife makers in South Texas. I need to get them back into use. His name was Les Visor, and he was a proud member of the Texas Woodcarver’s Guild. I love that his work is on display in at least a few places, I have a few of his works myself. Pieces of Pop.
Ruh roh! I'm hooked already, can't wait to finally get into whittling!
Got my kids each a kit for Christmas and really appreciate your video for them to watch

Huh this is really eye opening. I've always made a distinction between whittling and carving where stuff like this is carving and whittling is just going at whatever stick is handy with your pocket knife to pass the time, so the more specialized knives and proper wood blanks are a surprise to se in a whittling video.
