Thanks for the lesson, I've admired Maybelle's style of playing. Your lesson was great because of your explanations and slowing down to demonstrate the technique. I also like the video because it didn't pretend to be classy and polished. I could relate really well to how you presented the songs and playing Well done. I hope you make some more lessons in this easy to follow style Thank you very much Alan Western Australia

Thank you for taking the time to do another great lesson, Chris! I generally see the Carter lick as down-up strum, not up-down-up--I think you're closer to the style than most. Great tutorial, I've loved Single Girl, Married Girl since I heard it on the Anthology

This is great, thanks for posting. Really interesting that she had her guitar tuned down so much. I was trying to play SIngle Girl, Married girl with A and D chords and I could tell something was off, now I know.

Thank you for this! I just love Maybelle's picking style. Could you break down her style on "Solid Gone"? I listen to that song every day, it really displays her picking style well. Thanks again!

A lot of people try to teach the Carter scratch, but I've never seen anyone get the sound right. I think you did. It seems to me that the way she gets away with the finger pick is that she did upstrokes with the finger pick on the index finger, and the down strokes with the back of the nail of the middle finger.

Do you have any tips for learning Maybelle's flatpick style as demonstrated on songs like "I'm Leaving You This Lonesome Song"? She seemed to like playing out of an F position when flatpicking but I'm having a hard time starting out.

SirCoughsalot I'm no expert on her flat picking style but I know she did play in F position quite a bit, and of course C and G. Her right hand stroke isn't that different; she still picks down and then up-down-up. Sometime in the middle to late '30s left-hand wise she seemed to switch between her original low-tuned style and also tuning more or less normally but capoing quite high, sometimes at the 7th fret. If you watch footage of her from the '60s you'll often see her capoed up like that. That might help you figure out the left hand.

Mcrafty1 Not actively but once you get this basic style down it’s very easy to pick up other Carter Family songs. 90% of them are in C position tuned down and the melodies are usually all open strings or part of C, F or G chords. Tune down to match the record and you’ll get it.

Ahhh yeah I know what you mean. I can only play carter style guitar and yes many times has the pick flown off. It’s nice to see someone who is actually playing the way she actually played and not with a flat pick though later she did record some tunes with a flat pick
