I love this one Eric! I never play with my fingers (it's flat pick or bust around here), and I've been scared to change, but maybe it's time. These are all the notes I gravitate toward as a Rawlings devotee (and an Eric Haugen devotee, too!), and the groove is so intoxicating... I can't help wanting to dive down the rabbit hole. Oh, and good to see you with the Goya again!

Do it! The Carter thing feels awkward at first, but then becomes very natural - not having a pick between you and the strings gives you more of a feeling of connection to your buddy! That being said, if it's just too dang tough to do it fingerstyle it sounds great pick-style too!

Thank you for sharing an always tasteful, eclectic and constant amount of guitar lessons. It has helped me so much in my learning process and it has also showed me new ways of playing that otherwise I doubt I would've ever come across. I was wondering, after seeing your incredible Marc Ribot tutorials, if you would consider to record a guitar lesson of one of Jody Harris' or Robert Quine's songs. That would be mind blowing! Eric Haugen I got to see them was at the old Ryman theatre in downtown Nashville before they moved it. This was around 2007 maybe 2006 It was the last show they ever had at the original Ryman for years after. It was Gillian welch and David Rawlings with Emmy Lou harris and Elvis Costello. The show was def one of the greatest things I’ve ever witnessed. I got there late and missed the original show I had tickets for, I was devastated after just driving 12 hrs with a gal I didn’t know too well.. they told me they were doing a secret set after tho for a smaller crowd and let me and my friend attend. We went back to the car for more ‘party favors’ and then went back. I’ll never forget it because I had jus gotten a gram parsons tattoo about a year before this. When they came out they did all flying burrito brothers and gram parsons solo songs and then closed with an Elvis cover. Amazing . David was wearing an original nudie suit too that Marty Robbins had loaned him for the show.

Ah yes the F# dances with the G! Think of a salad - the basic chord tones are lettuce, cucumber, tomato. That F# is black olives - the 9th of the key. On minor chords, you can always add that 9th to get that specific friction.

Geoff Atkins strikes AGAIN!!! Would you suggest trying this with hybrid picking? Also, let’s hear an AMEN for that 2/3 wake up call for the ears! Just when you think it’s just PRETTY it gets pretty twisted. LOVE IT!

Happy birthday! I have a Fessenden SD-10 and it's great, but I still my my GFI Ultra. I'd recommending keeping an eye on the steel guitar forum for a GFI Ultra or GFI Expo - great pedal steels that hold tune, sound great, and are 15lbs lighter than most!

Love the acoustic series! One question, if you find the time: In the song Annabelle by The Ghost of Paul Revere, the guitarist plays a fantastic intro, I think he plays trioles or something (I'm not a theory pro) but I don't know exactly how he plays it and it drives me nuts :D Can you tell me what the technique is, please?

  • @EricHaugenGuitar

Aha I see it: Capo 3rd fret - he's playing an Em chord and hammering on the 0-2 on the A string. The third note of the triplet is on the open D string. So, he's only picking 2 notes but the hammeron generates the third!

Yes! A thousand times! Yes! My number one thing is to tell folks to play it slow - so they can engage with the notes while they play them. Work the micro articulations and accents.

Most people don't even know what micro articulation is .I was fortunate enough to study Classic Guitar with Chistopher Berg in the early 90s .Also lucky enough to meet and take a master class with Bill Kannigieser of the LA Guitar Quartet. These are two of the fastest players on the planet and introduced me to the slow is key mantra.Practicing slow develops skill. I'm really glad I ran into your channel I love the way you teach and make abstract concepts accessible. Thanks for what you do. I have really developed my ear training and new techniques studying your lessons the last few years learning in 80's and 90's was completely different than what is available today 😀. Both great just different 👌
