Simultaneously Improve Your Groove & Your Scales with These 3 Exercises

Conext - it's all about context. I know what it feels like to learn some nifty new scale grid, but not know exactly what to do with it. Guitar is often taught with rhythm and lead playing as two completely separate disciplines. I try very hard to bring them back together, as that's what all my heroes do.
This lesson is a recommendation on what to do once the you know the Blues, Minor, & Major scales reasonably well, and are looking for ways to get comfortable with them beyond the "up the ladder, down the ladder" kinda thing :-)
Rather than focus on speed, I think about chords and rhythm. I like being able to hear what harmonies go with the scale I'm practicing - it's a much more musical way of working. Side benefit - it's actually quite tricky on the brain to switch back and forth from single-note to chordal playing!

I love the rake that you do. It really pops on the Dark Funk lesson (I've learned the form and mostly got the timing, I've even got a good amount of the muting ... but that requires the most diligence). Here, too, you use the rake to great effect. I play with my fingers, but I should clearly work on playing with a pick.

Like, if you had a riff you thought was kinda ok, but something was missing, you could try it Bo Diddley style, or Neil Young style.

Cool! Welcome to my chill and informative guitar hang zone! My tastes are pretty varied - When I was a kid, it was a lot of classic rock, 70s songwriters, motown and soul. Then when I was a teenager Grunge hit, so I got into that. Grunge led to indie and other weird darker stuff like Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen. Then I got super into Jazz and Country at the same time, went to music college, and as an act of protest against virtuosity, delved into obscure 60s psyche stuff like The Pretty Things, Love, & Captain Beyond. Basically, I listen to just about anything other than new metal - the guitars are just too dang low!

@@EricHaugenGuitar That's pretty cool, usually people in college always love the same old virtuosos guys. Your channel is very inspiring to me because i always (mistakenly) thought that learning music would turn me into a Steve Vai type of guy, which i personally dislike.

I think your lessons are very valuable. Wish they could be longer. Wish I could have proper music lessons with you! What I find utterly perplexing is... how do you choose which scales you want to utilize? I mean, when do you pick the blues scale and when do you pick, say, minor/major pentatonic, or a major/minor scale... It's all pretty confusing. I guess it's all because I don't have a solid foundation in music theory.

  • @EricHaugenGuitar

Good questions, Adam! Basically, Blues scale works well almost anywhere, but from personal experience I find it sounds good and funky combined with 7th chords. Minor chords and minor scale go together quite naturally, as do Major Key progressions and the pretty pretty major scale. I'd recommend looking into how chord progressions work inside keys. I've got a couple of vids about this on my old theory playlist: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJiexM6Cf5qoaLw.html
