the most pure, rich, intimate, warm, movingly beautiful voice ever. the ultimate vocalist (not just a great singer) who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU... add in her perfect diction and enunciation (the best i've ever heard of any male or female singer or vocalist), her emoting and emphasis on every word for every lyric, her storytelling ability and feeling the lyrics of the song ( a ability so so many singers today have no idea of) and in my personal opinion you have the greatest female vocalist of love and romance songs ever. Remember Karen carpenter was only 20 years old when she recorded this song as well!... her voice is like a warm hug, a friend you haven't seen for a long time and reconnect with, a refreshing breeze, intoxicating smell of wood burning, and other descriptions. Her voice is soul reaching.

Oh, that voice and the nostalgia it evokes! Simply beautiful. Like you Psyche, I was a tot when this came out, and it brings back memories of childhood. My mother had all the early Carpenters LPs, so the incredible voices of Karen and Richard were heard often in our house. There is so much beauty, but also some melancholy, in Karen’s voice - one of the greatest in music. Lovely choice for this Sunday. Hope you are well Psyche. Thank you and take care. 🙂☺️

Hello Red, lovely to see you. I do hope things are progressing smoothly as possible x. Yes I completely agree with your statement - Karen's voice was beauty but also with melancholy. But their music will live on. I like to play more gentler tunes on a Sunday and after Skate, I thought it would be nice to have something a little quieter to start the day off with. Selena is coming later for a beautiful subscriber - it's her birthday today so it's for her. Have a wonderful peaceful Sunday Red with your family, and I hope that it is everything you would wish it to be and more. Until.....Psyche 🙋🏽‍♀️🌹✨

Hi Psyche ❤️ Karen’s voice is just like a hug. She’s so smooth and she really makes you feel her emotion with almost no effort. Richard was a genius with the arrangement too and is often overlooked. There are a lot of Carpenter reactions around but not many of this quality - smooth, sophisticated and appealing - thanks and well done! Just for your info those harmonies behind Karen's gorgeous vocals that you like so much were created in the studio by Richard and Karen overdubbing (singing over top of) her lead vocal multiple times to simulate the sound of a chorus or vocal group - each time they overdubbed they would sing a different harmony part - they did this often on their songs and did it better than anyone else - it came to be known as "The Carpenter Sound" - Karen was a contralto, which is the lowest of the female vocal registers, and had a 3 octave vocal range, which meant that she could sing with male baritones at the lower end and with mezzo sopranos at the upper end - and she had a tone or timbre that no one could match in it's warmth and richness.

Hello John, what a beautiful comment - thank you so much. Yes , uou are quite correct about the harmonising-I think that really adds to the flavour of their songs. Just such a tragedy that we lost her so young. They were 'anaxing'. Thanks again fir taking the time to write this. Really appreciated. Have a wonderful Wednesday. The Carpenters made wonderful music. Two of my favorite songs by them are "Love Is Surrender" and "Mr. Guder". The live performance videos show Karen playing the drums. The look of joy on her face tells the whole story of how she feels when she is playing the drums. This morning I was listening to cable channel Ambrosia. They had played "Been To Canaan" by Carole King. Right after that, Ambrosia played "Poetry Man" by Phoebe Snow. What a wonderful way to to start the morning, listening to those two beautiful songs. There were some awesome women singer/song writers of that time. Joni Mitchell's "Help Me", Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" and Laura Nyro's "Stoney End" are just a few of the great songs of that era.

Hi Psyche! Hope this finds you well today/tonight! I love The Carpenters! Karen’s voice was like silk. So soft, smooth and beautiful. I agree about there harmonization. It just blended together so perfectly. It’s sad how cruel people and the media can be. I think she was just too kind a person to be able to handle the criticisms about her weight. I don’t even think she was overweight. I believe they called her, chubby. So stupid! Thank you for posting this beautiful song! Hello dear OL - lovely to see you here - thanks you so much for turning up - much appreciated. After a hectic two days with Bruno and people probably dancing their skins off on Saturday night I thought it would be nice to have something easy and calming. I like to do softer beats on a Sunday including Country. I absolutely love this song, Karen was so lovely - and yes, people are cruel beyond measure but I believe that whatever darkness you give out it will slap you back two fold. So choices should be made wisely. She was, as you say small, but just a word 'chubby' just flipped with switch. Anyhow, I do hope you're ok OL and life is treating you well - you actually ran passed my mind yesterday as I was talking to someone about the ocean and when I swam with dolphins, and you were 'there' in my head! Have a truly wonderful Sunday, may it be peaceful and full of blessings. Until Psyche 🙋🏽‍♀️🌹✨

She was in great shape, unfortunately people suffering from anorexia have a distorted body image and can feel fat when they are skin and bones. Here's one of my favourite clips of her singing and playing the drums at age 18 before "The Carpenters" was formed. You can see what great shape she is in. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaOe266zkqWyfNo.html This is from a new KZread channel that Richard Carpenter started 2 years ago. There are a lot of gems on this channel. Here's a video of the TV show "The Dating Game" that Richard and Karen participated in back in 1970 kzread.info/dash/bejne/gp6qq5asdpyTgbg.html You'll notice how shy Karen is here. It's the cheesiest show I've ever seen but it's a good look at the Carpenters before they experienced fame.

BTW, this is a video made to the original studio recording, on which , in addition to doing the lead vocal, Karen also played the drums, as she did on all their recordings, as well as on stage in the early days, until she was talked into coming out from behind them because "they" thought it was what the audience wanted; they apparently didn't care what she wanted, & look what eventually happened. (Just my humble opinion, of course.)

Richard was just masterful at arranging these songs. He knew exactly how to take advantage of Karen's voice. I read in an interview some time ago that he wished they had recorded more classic songs. One that they did record was Little Girl Blue, so worth listening to. There's a real gem of a TV performance containing a medly of these kinds of songs sung together with no other than Ella Fitzgerald. Just search for their names together and you'll find it here on YT. Another gem is Karen doing a live performance of Ave Maria in 1978, one of the last times they performed in public. Someone captured it on a kind of low quality recorder of the time, but my god, her rendition is amazing. The reaction of the audience captured at the end attests to the brilliance of her take on this song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3qKqqyjpr3fl8o.html

Sorry, I needed to edit a little before I hit send, oops. I would love to watch your reaction to "someday" by Richard and Karen. One of my faves. God bless

Hi Jerry, thanks for being part of the SLC - and no problem - I respond to 99% of messages and I type so fast I am sure some of them come out like "ifoeji mf of rho warm f orjgoaredk duo acrd" 😂😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️. I attach The Carpenters Playlist on my channel - enjoy and have a wonderful Wednesday. Psyche 🙋🏽‍♀️🌹✨kzread.info/head/PLWQGjnqwg9JJ-9sJe2_7YFn2MASN9eUUv

The harmonizing was so on point because on a lot of their studio recording the background voices were actually Karen’s and Richard’s voices overdubbing on the track…

You know, you are absolutely correct about Karens voice. The only i can describe it is to say there's. Karen then there is everyone else. I know disrespect intended to all the other fine female singers

The origin of this song is a "Crocker Bank" TV commercial from 1970. Here's the original commercial: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2uMm8quqZrWeLQ.html You look too young to have been alive when this came out in 1970 LOL. I was 12 at the time.
