No singer nowadays compares to Karen, and probably nobody ever will, she was so special and rare! :) Her music is so well crafted and is so timeless which is the sign of a great singer. No matter how old somebody is or what time period it is, people can ALWAYS relate to Karen Carpenter, she has that magic that people will always love. :) She will always be my favorite singer.

Beautifully sung to Perfection in every respect on first Take. Otherworldly beautiful angelic voice. The "Kind of Hush" album was extraordinary for this & many reasons!
This song should have been a big hit.So beautiful! Karen's voice and Richard's music are very pleasing to the ears.If Karen were here one more time we could say a big Thank You to her.I'd tell her what a big impression she made on this little kid of 7 years old the 1st time I heard her on the radio. That day I thought the world of her and still do.Bless You Karen! You made us feel a range of emotions every time you sang and spoke. The world was warmer with you in it.Thank You! Love You!
You think you have heard all of this woman's wonderful music........then I find this. Beautiful, really shows what a great voice she had. What a terrible loss. I wish you were still with us today, the fantastic music you and Richard could be making.
Has to be the most beautiful and perfect female voice ever recorded.

I've been listening to this undiscovered gem since its release date on the album. I've never heard anything else quite like it. Richard's piano, the orchestration and of course Karen's vocal are timeless, pristine and so damned heartfelt. If only I could hear her one more time.

@@Mauronog1 I don't know if my discussion (above) of this song will interest you or not, but I had the opportunity just a couple of days ago to write to Lewis Anderson, the talented gentleman who wrote it, and to express my appreciation to him as well as to pose a few questions about it. He was very gracious to have replied to me at all and as a musician/songwriter myself I feel something of a burden of debt eased by having been able to say 'Thank You' to him personally for his composition. I think it's clear that Richard and Karen gave the song the ability to soar much higher and wider in the world plus they imbued it with their own individual magic, but it's also true that Lewis is primarily responsible for its singular character and is something of an unsung-though not uncredited-hero. (Lucky) songwtiters place their songs with performing artists as a matter of business all the time in exchange for a percentage and some due recognition but the heartfelt artistry Lewis put into this song when he wrote it in his twenties is just uncommon and very special. (He was not wrong to mention to me that he put careful attention into the melody, which is outstanding, although I find his chord progression and lyrics equally strong and similarly compelling.) Like your experience of the song, I find its universal premise-deliberately retreating now and then into the revisualized happy memories of one's own upbringing and hometown-personally compelling and meaningful. This is a standout song-and also a standout CARPENTERS arrangement/recording-which really gets under your skin and stays with you over time. Now, in 2024 America, the song also has an extra level of meaning for those of us who think this way as a chronological reminiscence of how our country/society used to be when we were young too. Lewis himself surely realizes all of this, and I hope it's gratifying to him when others realize it too. If I had to give you my first impression of Lewis himself I would use the words professional, gracious, modest, and generous toward a total stranger who's also a fan. Sometimes talented musical artists are terrible at the music business, or vice versa, but Lewis strikes me as the rarer kind of person who's very competent at both. I'm in the process of studying up on some of his other songs as well next, though at age 68 it takes me a while. Cheers-Don

on about the third time of listening to this, my eyes started welling up. a carpenters' song hasn't done this to me for quite some time. there's something so beautiful and melancholy about it. although i'm sure it's a combination of the song and karen's voice, which has an undercurrent of sadness in it, anyway. just beautiful.

perfect vocal

This video made me cry...so beautiful in song, and in images. Karen continues to remain timeless...a class act...hard to follow.
Jesus, how can that be topped? What a gift, God was so good to her and to us.
It's not just the absolute perfection in the way she voices and phrases her verses, but the tonal quality and the unique vocal nuances that give Karen's voice the kind of originality that will never be duplicated. She left us way too soon.
SHE is one of the few singers in the world who was able to sing low notes efficiently. IN fact she reigned supreme on singing low notes . MOST of the famous singers even have / had problems producing same degree of excellence while singing low notes . IT specially happens when a high note of a song plunges to a low note and requires to remain there between three and seven seconds -- here most of the singers find themselves in an unknown territory but LATE KAREN CARPENTER was different and exclusive. AND of course her mellifluous voice which still enthralls the audience UP AND DOWN THE WORLD. INDEED, A RARE VOICE.
Richard Carpenter was a genius at arrangement / production.
The most beautiful voice in the world ever, no competition, no one comes near, a fan since I was 3yo in 1970 and all through my early teens even when it was not cool ❤️

Ned, thanks. 40 years ago I was deep in Rock (GFR, Led Zepellin, Santana, Doors and so). I liked Carpenters though (Yesterday once more, Can I dream Can't I); but, it has been during my adulthood, that I realized how wonderful Karen's voice was. Her sentiment, her feeling, her sadness is the same one that, from time to time, we face in life. She was, is and will be the only one: Karen. And One More Time, you will be never forgotten. Disco was really taking off in 1976. That might be part of the reason. "A Kind of Hush" is a very sincere album, to some listeners at that time a bit out of touch with the music trends. Richard specifically instructed Karen not to sing disco music because it didn't match her singing style. Needless to say, Karen did not listen when she made a solo album in 1979 containing a few disco songs. Richard, recovering from prescription drug rehab, told Karen he did not like the album so she never released it. Richard officially released the album sometime around 1989.

Wow! A song with the name of my state in it!!
It has often been said of Karen that she is singing to you as if she were right there with you, and I don't think there is a better example of that than this track in all of the many Carpenters' recordings. She really sounds like she is sitting down with a close friend and opening her heart to them.

I heard someone say that they think one of the reasons why so many people have such a visceral response to Karen's singing is because it sounds like a mother singing to her child, it's an interesting theory, who knows? Of course the heartbreaking irony of that is that she never had any of her own children to sing to.

Ed had a great show. I miss those days.
Beautiful piece. I love the way there is a delay before the bulk of the accompaniment enters the song.
A longtime CARPENTERS fan, I just (July 7, 2024) had the opportunity to do something special which most fans of a song/recording don't get to do: communicate with one of the people who created it, ask a few questions about it, and--most importantly--thank them personally for it. In this case, that person wasn't Richard Carpenter although I'm grateful to have been able to communicate with him twice in the past too. The person was the songwriter, Lewis Anderson, a gentleman who has had a successful music career in Los Angeles and Nashville and who wrote ONE MORE TIME in his twenties. He's a Guitarist and told me he wrote the song on Guitar. Richard and Karen heard the song because the opening act ahead of them while on tour--a solo performer named Denny Brooks and a friend of Lewis'--was performing it. Lewis wrote both the music and the lyrics and Richard's arrangement is apparently very faithful to the original. I have a few thoughts to share about this particular song, which is also one of my personal favorites, both among CARPENTERS songs but also among all songs that I know. (Other favorites are OVER THE RAINBOW, THE WARMTH OF THE SUN, DESPERADO, HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE, etc.) With ONE MORE TIME, Lewis wrote a masterpiece in song. The music and lyrics are both of the highest quality and they work incredibly well together. Everything is heartfelt and beautiful--the chord progression, the Vocal melody, the imagery and sentiment of the lyrics, the universal appeal, and (as I told Lewis) the length is just right too. Richard Carpenter's arrangement is gorgeous; Karen's performance is captivating; and their joint execution is rather akin to the ease and liberties which are fruitfully taken when performing art songs in classical music--where everything is meticulously planned and done precisely but also naturally and expressively. Nothing Lewis needed to say in his lyric was left out or said inefficently. In terms of their sonance, his words also SING WELL. My own favorite bits of his phraseology are "And no one need really know that I've been gone" and "when love was all we had." I'm so glad that several people have posted the full lyrics in this comments section. I'm a musician myself and dabble in songwriting/lyricwriting enough to be able to recognize the earmarks of great song lyrics I encounter, and this song has them. One of the reasons this song works so well for Karen is that the tone of what's said is heartfelt, honest, clear, and full of human appeal. A hallmark of really great lyrics too is that, depsite the shortness of songs, they often make you mull them over and thus allow you to gain new insights about what they mean or imply. For example, until I watched this video tonight it never occurred to me that "Well, I'll just close the door and turn out all the lights" might be a reference to someone DREAMING about their hometown while asleep instead of sitting in an easy chair, letting go of their stress, and just PICTURING the same thing in their mind's eye while awake. But of course, it could happen either way though more reliably and predictably while awake. What a GREAT premise for a song: remembering your childhood home town and the people in it and feeling grounded by that amid the crazy/stressful life of an adult. And the Chorus is so spot-on: "One more time for the good times that far outweigh the bad…one more time for the good times when love was all we had." Such well-chosen expression is just rich ground for the audience's imagination and empathy, and it works so very well for the singer/protagonist. For anyone who's wondering, while Karen and Richard grew up in Connecticut, Lewis Anderson DID grow up in Louisiana and so the song is autobiographical in at least that respect. Some songwriters will get very autobiographical in their lyrics for certain songs and others will only use personal history/experience as a convenient point of departure and then write (mostly) fiction but fiction borne of personal acquaintance, and so such lyrics are only 'loosely' autobiographical. However autobiographical he was being or not being in this song, Lewis said it incredibly well and we all understand exactly the emotion he's captured for us and which Karen sings about so believably. For those of you who are Guitarists or Pianists, I have an experiment for you to try sometime: Find online or figure out the chords for a favorite song like this one and JUST PLAY THE CHORDS at the appropriate tempo; the underlying emotional landscape of the song will still be there with just the chords. Add the melody to them and the emotion becomes more directed, focused, and involving. Add the lyrics to those elements and the emotion becomes defined by specific imagery provoked by the words; the experience becomes visual too (in the imagination). I'm a huge admirer of Lewis' chord progression in this song; it runs the length and breadth of the available harmonic resources to create great emotional depth and it integrates perfectly with the facile melody Lewis wrote (the man must have an incredible ear). The twice-repeated "When love was all/When love was all/When love was all we had" in the second Chorus boosts the emotion even more at that critical point in the song and that repetition is original to the song as Lewis wrote it too. I KNOW Richard Carpenter has a phenomenal ear and so he wouldn't have chosen this wonderful song in the first place if it didn't have all these fine features within it already. Like actors, I suppose, who portray a beloved characters and who then get 'credit' for everything about said character because they supply the face and voice for them, performing artists often get much of the creidit for an effective song like this one. Karen and Richard indeed certainly deserve it, but so does Lewis Anderson, whose mind and heart got there first and made it possible for THE CARPENTERS to amplify the effect for us in their own ways a bit later. So please, when you next enjoy listening to this recording again, remember too the name of Lewis Anderson, who gave us all this terrific song.
Just Beautiful......................
If this song doesn't bring tears to your eyes--well, I just cannot imagine it. Heartbreakingly gorgeous as only Karen could sing it, & rich could arrange/ produce it. ----Wolfsky9, 70 y/o

This song was written by Lewis Anderson, who is a native of Louisiana. In my imagination, I see him living in a dingy apartment in Los Angeles, struggling to make it in the music business, and writing this song because he is feeling homesick. I don't know if Karen had any emotional attachments to the state, but of course she sings the song in a way that makes you believe she does. That's her magic.
OOOOOOOOOOOH JUST A WONDERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL SONG
A " hidden gem" by Rich & Karen; his arrangement is just masterful, & Karen, here in '76 , was just in top form here. I simply cannot imagine another voice giving us this haunting rendition.----------------------WolfSky9
An Angel both at Christmas and ever since I first heard her voice back when I was 12 years old on a cassette entitled Simply: “Carpenters.” Her death brought me to tears. Her Artistry is unmistakable and she is sure to go down as one of the top female vocalists of all time. She only lived 33 years but her music is as appreciated today as it was in the late 60s and early 70s. “The Singles” is a treasured musical heirloom. Along with brother Richard their music lives on here and around the world. Not just “Now & Then” but forever and always.
