should it be first auscultat than palpate the carotic? !you will send the emboli to the brain in stenotic carotis by palpation first

Thanks for the very helpful videos that I have been using for my PA PD classes. Q: Wouldn't it be advisable to auscultate prior to palpating just in case the person has some plaque there, which if palpated can cause it to move and cause a CVA?

You never want to palpate before auscultation, otherwise you risk embolism if an unstable atherosclerotic plaque is present. Good demonstration though!

Few things wrong here. One should always auscultate before palpating carotid to prevent thromboembolism. Secondly, patient needs to be at 30 degree incline for JVP assessment.

Do you ask the patient to hold there breath during auscultation of the carotid artery for bruit-as I have noticed on just starting to perform cardiovascular examinations etc, that all I hear are the patients breath sounds which I know as they occur on inspiration/expiration?

Always start with the stethoscope first, you don’t want to dislodge an emboli to the brain and cause a stroke. If you hear bruits, do not palpate with your hands

Should his HOB be at 45• so you can also assess JVD?
