Carotid artery disease is a disease characterized by the buildup of a fatty or waxy substance called plaque inside the carotid arteries.
• The carotid arteries are two large blood vessels located on each side of the neck right below the angle of the jaw line. They each divide into the internal and external carotid arteries
• The internal carotid artery supply oxygenated blood to the front part of the brain where thinking, personality, and sensory-motor functions exist.
• The external carotid artery supply oxygenated blood to the face, scalp, and neck.
• In carotid artery disease, these arteries become narrowed or blocked as a result of the buildup of plagues.
• This, in turn, may block the blood flow to the brain, leading to TIA (transient ischemic attack) - a temporary shortage of blood to the brain and increasing the risk of stroke.
• Carotid artery disease is a very serious condition.
CAUSES
Carotid artery disease is caused by atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries.
These plaques are made up of clumps of cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissues and other cellular waste that gathers at microscopic injury site in the lining of the artery wall.
Atherosclerosis can make the carotid arteries stiff and narrow, limiting the amount of oxygen and nutrient delivered to vital brain structures that help with our day to day activities.
A further narrowing of the artery over time may cause the plaque to rupture, causing blood clots to form. A large blood clot may completely block the artery or small clots and plaques may travel up to the smaller arteries in the brain causing disruption of blood supply to parts of the brain.
Certain factors that may increase the risk of carotid artery disease are:
• Smoking
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Age
• Obesity
• Sedentary lifestyle
• A family history of atherosclerosis
• Sleep apnea
• Diabetes
• Insulin resistance.

During my annual physical, my doc placed the stethoscope on each side of my neck. She could hear a "swooshing" noise. She sent me to a vascular surgeon who ordered a doppler than a CT scan. I have 90% blockage on the right side & 85% blockage on the left side. I am currently seeing a cardiologist to obtain cardiac clearance for surgery. The vascular surgeon is going to remove the plaque in both arteries. I smoked for 45 years. I quit.smoking, cold turkey, two years ago due to having dizzy spells. My vascular surgeon said that was the BEST thing I could have done. If you smoke, please stop. I am now taking 20 mg of a statin/day & a blood thinner prior to surgery. I am 67 years old, I'm.5'7" & weight 150 pounds. Yes, I am.quite active. I was told I am asymptomatic which is very dangerous. My surgery should be scheduled soon. 🙏

I hope you are ok! I am 41 and just found out I probably have this; I am waiting for CT to confirm. I failed the first test. I had symptoms for almost a year and not 1 doctor out of 7 that I have saw ever connected the dots or even put a stethoscope to my neck. Even after I told them I could hear my heartbeat in my right ear, right neck discomfort, trouble swallowing at times, fatigue, puffy eyes and face on right side, hoarseness, swollen hand, and more. I had to research myself and tell them I was worried about a blood clot before I could even get the scan to prove them wrong. They dismissed me for a whole year. I hope you can come back and let us know how you are doing. I am an ex smoker as well smoked for my entire 20s up until 35. I quit 6 years ago. I am not sure if this did it or the jab. I didn't have any symptoms until a few months after my second shot.

I’m 81 and had a TIA 6 weeks ago, a scan with injected dye showed I had a tear in my external right carotid artery, it was confirmed with an MRI. What can cause a tear? I’m on all the medications now, statins, BP tabs, blood thinners.

A tear in the carotid artery can be caused by various factors, including atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, trauma, or even spontaneous dissection. It's important to follow your prescribed medications and treatments as advised by your healthcare provider to manage the risk factors and promote healing. Regular follow-up appointments and lifestyle adjustments can also contribute to a healthier recovery. Please consult with your medical professional for specific guidance tailored to your condition.

I went from trace atherosclerosis two years ago to 50% and 70% occlusion in just two years. Doctors are unable to explain how this could have happened. I didn't have any risk factors either. I never smoked drank or did drugs. Low BMI of 19, low cholesterol 127, normal blood sugar, normal blood pressure. They can't operate on it because they are intracranial occlusions. The extra cranial part is clear. All they could do is prescribe anti-platelet medication. They said it could delay but not prevent further strokes. I think I am screwed.
