heaves or lifts are rhythmic, sustained pulsations that lift the hand and are s/o enlarged ventricle or ventricular aneurysm

always listen FIRST - if there is a bruit - DO NOT PALPATE ! You can dislodge a plaque that can R/I a stroke ! auscultate and THEN palpate for a thrill if no bruit is heard AS, PMHNP.

If you think of the carotid pulse as a wave, the upstroke is the first part of the pulse and is followed by the slightly longer downstroke.

Always start with the stethoscope first, you don’t want to dislodge an emboli to the brain and cause a stroke. If you hear bruits, do not palpate with your hands
