Carole Hooven on Transgender Athletes in Sports | The Forward with Lance Armstrong

Спорт

In the sixth episode of this series, Lance is joined by Carole Hooven, PhD, Evolutionary Biologist at Harvard University. She also wrote the book, T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone that Dominates and Divides Us, which focuses on testosterone and sex differences. Together, they discuss the science around testosterone in relation to this transgender athletes, the idea of biology vs. ideology, and why the focus should be on policies, as opposed to individual athletes.

I am a women's basketball player. Title 9 allowed me to compete and attend college on a full scholarship. I played on the boy's team in high school. Once sophomore year came on, I could compete anymore. Where are the women? This shouldn't even be a conversation. Hormones don't start when puberty hits. Men are born with testosterone. Also, puberty is starting sooner and sooner. This drives me crazy. Please tell me any groups I can join to fight this problem. It should be called "Take a Knee."

Odd that leadership at Harvard is so lacking perspective they can't see how their lurch into this black hole is damaging the long-term reputation of the university and brand, and their own reputations. Incredible that Harvard would prefer to retain a person like Diversity Director Laura Simone Lewis, while losing a person like Carole Hooven. Side by side there aren't many people who don't instantly recognize the yawning gap between them in character and caliber. None of this is going to wear well with time. Deep down, although they'll never admit it, a decade from now, there are going to be many people who come to realize they fell captive to the moment, lost their way, behaved badly and joined an ugly mob.

I hope Armstrong learns to become a better INTERVIEWER...and focus more on bringing out what his guests have to offer...as opposed to the seemingly perpetual references to himself and his past. Hey Lance, great interview. I am a trans women - I hate the term - but it is the reality. I do love cycling. I started late in my life, in my 40's. I am early 50's now and ride 17-18 k a year. Before transition - over 20 years ago - I never competed. Now I do and I have to admit, always with guilt in my mind. On the one hand I live my life as a woman, on the other hand I know I am a biological male and that is not subject to any changes. It is clear that I have some advantages against the general female population. It is a difficult topic to me and certainly to everyone who knows that I am biological male and thus probably should not be competing as a woman. That said, I do not compete in any league or official event, just big races open to everyone. But as as woman, thus being timed - if there is an official timing - and compared within the female cat. I suppose the solution for critics of this would be either to not compete or do it as a male. Then again I am legally - and I have gone through a lot of trouble because of that - a female or at least recognised as one before the law. But that does not change the resentments people have with me living as a woman. Thus I do live very secluded and try to limit my social interactions to the bare minimum. However, participating in races has given me and my love for road cycling some purpose apart from working and otherwise just existing. However, I do feel the guilt and the controversy on the issue and as Carole stated, I am sure there is no proper solution to this issue of male TS in women sports. It is simply put just unfair, especially when you rob women of their chances in professional sports.

First of all, I want to acknowledge you for being open, honest, and vulnerable in your sharing. It’s a shame you feel you need to seclude yourself. I have both open and closed opinions regarding trans immersion. My open opinion are freedom of choice in transformation for adults. I believe we should be able to have open dialogue with freedom, respect for opposing opinions, and with care for people vulnerability. In general it must be very difficult to openly be trans in our society in different situations. It’s not a natural occurrence to be around for most people, and some of those people I can imagine can be pretty cruel in several ways. I’m pretty closed opinion in these ways; I don’t think trans people should be bullied, treated cruelly, or persecuted in anyway way in normal human interactions…meaning walking down the street, grocery shopping, going to the theater…fill in the blank for normal interactions. Unless the trans person is cruel, a hardened criminal, “canceling” and closed minded judging/persecuting others etc. Of course I’m saying things very simply in text. I don’t think the subject should be forced onto young children who don’t have context. For instance my daughter’s school district has required second grade teachers read and teach a book titled “Who are you? A kids guide to gender identity.” Without going into it here, it’s absolutely ridiculous this is mandatory teaching in second grade. And there are 4 parental responses (I find 95%+ parents has zero clue this book is mandatory for second grade teachers to teach or that it’s taught at all. Responses: 1. They love it and think they should be more of this 2. They don’t have the bandwidth regarding what the schools do. They don’t care. Let the schools do what they want. I’m too busy. 3. They are against it for children of age 7 and their own child, but are afraid to say anything because they worry about the public and social backlash and being judged a bigot etc. 4. Are against it and willing to discuss publicly (there’s a wide range of how their passion is shared). - I find groups 3 and 4 are the largest. Group 3 bring the largest. Let kids be kids. Teach them how to show up in life, be good citizens, have care for people, no bullying etc. Don’t force subjects onto them and expose them to very complicated subjects they don’t have context for and tell them it’s “normal”. That’s an adult agenda and isn’t very present with where young children are actually at. They want to play and explore. Leave them alone. Now somewhere between 6th and 8th grade…it’s a different story. But second grade requirements…come on. And I’ve worked with thousands of kids at this point. The wide range of emotional and mental development and lack of development in a single second grade class of 25 seven year olds is quite a bit. It’s a no brainier for me. Next, athletics. I’ve been involved in sports since I was 4. I’m turning 50 in less than 6 months. I’ve competed at low end professional levels, refereed, and still an a professional coach. I think I’m this modern world there should be 3 basic categories in sports; men’s (should be an open division that accepts all converts who want to compete regardless of gender, and the results are the results), coed - all participants are aware it’s coed and freely participate, female - only biological females can participate. And they should not have to pay the opportunity cost of a trans woman. Examples - Leah Thompson shouldn’t be competing against women in a woman’s league. Adeline Johnson of Branson High shouldn’t pay the opportunity cost of a trans girl in NCS track championships, or Fallon Fox in combat sports (I’m not talking about false or intentionally skewed “facts” in either direction for this case). I don’t think transitioning (chemically or surgically) should happen for minors, especially without parental involvement and approval. Of course this doesn’t include abusive parents. If the kid has an abusive parent, that situation should be dealt with legally. Again, thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. Reading your experience provides me your nuance and expands what I’m exposed to. Your feeling of guilt. Your limiting your own social interactions, etc. Those are real human experiences and warrant care and understanding from all of us in your community. By community, I mean society…not minimized to only the trans community. I’m a straight man, and I consider everyone in society part of my community.

The entire point of womens/girls sports is for females to have the same opportunity at success as a man/boy. Women develop, in puberty, with compromised physique relative to athletic performance. Everything from height, to pelvic/hip/knee/ankle alignment, to menstruation, to heart/lung capacity and muscle density. Without a separate division for women/girls, no little girl would realistically even be able to dream of success in sport comparable to what a man/boy can attain. It is not punishment of people like you to say you can't compete against women/girls, but rather simply recognizing real biology, reality of sports, and to prevent further erosion of opportunities for women/girls. You must realize that every time you, or another transgender male identifying as women/girl has any success in sport, it is at the expense of a woman/girl. You made a choice, regardless of how you feel about your gender, to disregard the fact you are a male to identify as a woman. You should accept that it comes with some drawbacks, one is that you should NOT compete as a woman/girl as it does hurt a woman, every time, as the division for women/girls was NOT intended for any males, regardless of how they identify.

The reason you have guilt is because God gave you a conscience to know right and wrong, to know in your mind that you are a male and you are being convicted about it. For whatever reason you have not been affirmed that you are a man and that being a man is a good thing because that is your identity, that is how God made you. God has a certain role for you as a man and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Compare the speed of the ball, distances, times etc. males have an advantage in many sports and retain the advantage even after transition. We need a pure female category. If you allow trans women compete then they cannot be included in podium or placement they can compete. Let trans compete now you have your study. Don’t delete Title 9.

First amendment brother. You’re allowed to say what you want. Clearly you don’t have the intention to hurt people. Using the language, “I’m not allowed to say…” is feeding the machine of control. Don’t do it. Be respectful. Be willing to listen to opposing views. Be willing to change when you believe you’re wrong. And be willing to exercise your first amendment rights…because after all, the people who are telling you you’re not allowed to say something are very willing to use their first amendment rights while judging and labeling you and at the same time telling you that you can’t use your rights as an American. I think this transgender topic in sports, Locker rooms etc is pretty simple. It comes down to opportunity costs. The opportunity cost to be deliberately go through the lengthy chosen process of becoming trans, should not be paid by anyone other than the trans person who made the choice to go through the process…. Meaning, if you become a trans woman, no biological woman athlete should pay your opportunity costs due to your new founded advantage

I'm still watching this interview and liking so far, but forgive me if if you cover this later. At the most basic level, I think that there are two categories one must to use to describe individual people, sex and gender. The first one is sex. It is genetic. It's binary fact for each individual. If the person have the person two X chromosomes, they're female. Or, does the person one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, they're male. Genetic abnormalities aside, these are the only two possibilities. The second is gender. This is self assigned. This is a non-binary descriptor that one can use to self describe as male, or female, or any infinitesimal value between the two. In math, two times infinity equals infinity. That means there's an infinite number of genders, but still still only two sexes. But, for sports competition, I believe only the first category can be considered. Male or female. I believe only females should be allowed to compete in women's sports. If women good enough, I say let them compete against men. In a few sports, they do very well, but the top male will ALMOST always best the to female. While endurance running is not a "male" per se, the divisions are still classified and men/males and women/females, in this year's Western States 100, a woman finished 6th overall. She beat tens of the of the most elite to male competitors in the sport. A major accomplishment in sports for sure, but she still didn't win. Not even close. The men's winner finished with a time of 14h 40m. The women's winner finished at 15h 29m. That's still 6.9% longer to finish. Still awesome, though. However, in almost all sports, that's simply not case. Not even close. If you are a genetic man, you should never be allowed to compete in women's sports no matter what your gender is. Period.

First off, great interview and I appreciate Dr Hooven’s intellectually rigorous approach to the topics in the conversation. However, I disagree with taking a different approach to elite vs common levels sports-gender categories. As the Dr stated, the female category was created to BE exclusionary for the benefit of female participants. I think this should extend down to the scholastic level. Telling a gender, dysphoria person that they cannot compete in a female category is not canceling their right to compete. It’s establishing the rights of females to know that they are competing against other females - regardless of whether it is world, champion, Olympic, collegiate, or high school level

But as for persecution, its not women who are persecuting people who are "different." It's mostly men. They're the ones beating up trans people , or gay people, attacking lesbians, hating on their classmates who are different even when they are very young. Trans women being so cruel and insensitive to women in regard to their spaces, its just terrible. Transwomen should go after men, who will attack them in their restrooms and what not, instead they are coming into women's spaces and attacking women for their their opposing viewpoints. Go after the men behaving badly. Why do transwomen want to go into women's prisons? Because they fear the men.

Great interview, Lance and Carole. Thank you! I agree with Carole 100% as to the biological reality. Here's my own thinking on the issue: Isn't there a clear solution path here: Just as women had to struggle in order to have sports competitions exclusively for them, let the trans people go through a similar struggle to have the same...a third league (federation, union, association, etc), or however many the LGBTQ folks may want to propose. How about the handicapped/physically-challenged folks? They’ve managed to establish their own leagues...paralympics. Did wheelchair paralympians ever try to compete with normal runners in the marathon?? (If they were allowed to do that, it wouldn’t be Kipchoge holding the marathon record today.) Is not allowing them to do so, a violation of their human rights? Aren’t the trans athletes in a class of their own just as the paralympians? After all, a great many of the trans folks, I take it, do not claim to be either men or women, but just trans of various colors. They do claim that there are more genders than can be counted on one’s fingers and toes, don’t they? They do have their rainbow flag, don’t they? See this article: committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/16319/pdf/ The trans folks today can’t even unite as to whether they are just trans or whether they are men or women. Those who don’t want to admit they are unique, that they are trans and not actual females/males are a clear minority, though admittedly very vocal and pushy, “squeaky wheels”. Let’em squeak all they want, as long as they do it legally and don’t hurt anyone, but how about we let men be men, women be women, trans be trans, and let’s just try to live and let live? Until the trans people of whatever variation are able to come up with the support needed to establish such leagues, just let the athletes themselves in the current men's/women's leagues take a vote on whether they want trans athletes competing with them. They're the ones whose votes really matter, the ones who have the most "skin in the game". That would be a valid political process, but, OK, say we make it a general public political matter, and let’s say that the general public would vote to let trans people have their own leagues? OK, and would the public then also approve of funding all of those leagues using tax revenues, since there’s virtually zero chance there’d be enough money to support them otherwise? (Carole is right that the science is actually clear-apolitical, but making an athletic league is very political AND economic.) If there just aren't enough trans people to develop the support they need for their own leagues, well, that's just tough...just as not everyone has the ability to be a pro athlete even though they may deeply desire to be one...we can't all become what we dream of becoming, contrary to self-help-development preachers' motivational sermons...We all do have our limitations...Get real! In a democratic political process, which is what we Americans supposedly advocate, we need to remember that not everyone always gets their way. It’s rule by majority, and some have even called it “tyranny of the masses”. That’s the way it is...not every trans can get everything they may want, and neither can the rest of us.

Lance….why is this a conversation that we need to have? The roles and lines between men and women sports should never be blurred! It’s okay that you live your truth as it is called, but if you are born as a man, and have all the strength of said man you should not be in women sports! If you were born as a woman and hold that different body composition you should not be in men sports! I mean really, what are we talking about here? Let’s just take models.. The runway wants to see men in men’s clothes, and women in women’s clothing. Sports has yet to fully integrate blacks into sports like Golf, NASCAR, F1 and Indy car racing, and don’t get me started with cycling, because though there have been blacks in the tour, they have to been signed to any large contracts and solely looked as a Token gesture, and not a true invite. Lance, I’m not telling you or anyone reading this any new information, but how the world works. I would love to speak to you as a truth speaker on this subject, because so many time those of us with a level head, that will speak without yelling and anger get left out with all the noise in the room. P.S. I do not dislike transgender but do believe that their truth does not transcend non-integrated sports.

@@tjtennisicmroll2k You see this is what I’m talking about…You are the problem. There needs to be no conversation. A transgender female to male cannot enter the NFL draft, and that is that. No conversation ever needed. No female basketball player no matter how great she may think she is can ever play in the NBA. The world shall respect their right to live their truth, but you can’t wake up one morning and put on a dress and lipstick and then walk into women’s restroom. The world just needs to say NO! There is no way going into a woman’s restroom can make you be or feel like a women when you are not. Now, that being said…they the transgender community will be forced to conform to the world that exists, and not the one they want to make. The lines in sports are very clear and those that say well the birth certificate says male at birth, but a woman is here to compete, must be removed. There should be no fear of the community coming after you or that they are going to get on the “social media” and cancel a whole sport. Ask bud light how that’s working out for them. Where is the support from the community for bud light? No support for Bud Light, because it does not further nonsense, while forcing the blurring of lines in sports does further nonsense. I say its easy for the transgender to live their truth, and stay out of women restrooms, and women sports…just say no we except you, but all the things that come with your truth, YOU will have to EXCEPT. There is no going back to what they were not, and no changing the road they are now on to who they are. No conversation…what has been will always be in sports and should never change and or be blurred!

Oh and a REAL ISSUE! A Nineteenth-Century Precedent The May 1933 book burning in Nazi Germany had a precedent in nineteenth century Germany. In 1817, German student associations (Burschenschaften) chose the 300th anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses to hold a festival at the Wartburg, a castle in Thuringia where Luther had sought sanctuary after his excommunication. The students, demonstrating for a unified country-Germany was then a patchwork of states-burned anti-national and reactionary texts and literature which the students viewed as “Un-German.” So here in America books about Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Arron are tagged CRT and remove from libraries all over Florida!

Lance, here's one easy example for Ms. Hooven of a woman competing equally and well with the men; Annika Sorenstam. She played against the guys at the Colonial, outplayed many. I think she would have won on the men's PGA if she had stayed out there for a year or two. There are some other examples of elite women athletes beating top men. I think Sarena in her prime would have dumped many of the better male pros. As for projecting hypoptheticals about about great male athletes transitioning, like Nadal or M. Jordan, it's pretty ludicrous, since no top male athletes in history have ever attempted to transition at the height of their careers. It just doesn't happen. They would lose so much of their heroic image and prestige, and the psychological changes themselves would take many years to adjust to, since going from a top alpha male to female would require a huge, huge adjustment. Again, think of Jenner, who hid in the house in his late 30s and chickened out. He/she only felt good about transitioning late in life after others had finally paved the path. Even she acknowledges she is glad she had no options to transition when she was young, since she advocates banning and might have been banned from ever competing in today's world. She's an example of a very rich, famous, late in life T-woman who is somewhat spoiled and very much out of touch with the realities of most T women, who don't have all her privilege, status, and money for so many of the expensive procedures and extravagant lifestyle. I'd take her opinions with a grain of salt.. The original Olympic standards in the early 2000s, which were and are still very good, required completed transition, 2 years real life living experience, and specific measurable bio- chemical changes, such as T levels, muscle mass, etc. They are a very good attempt at a fair and level playing field. Lia Thomas would not even have been qualified to swim this year, which would have a good thing. Keep in mind that of the relatively few T Olympians, many have been close to the same height and musculature as an average female, some even smaller. Only a couple T women have every won, most have zero biological advantage. Hooven glossed over your point that her work is a very small sample size when you asked her point blank and went on to push her exclusionary views. Plus, quite honestly, there will always be athletes who have biological advantages over others, whather cis or T. Her argument falls apart here. As for huge genetic male athletes who might desire to transition, only a few do, because they know they will stick out like like sore thumbs and face riducule and smirks the rest of their lives. But some do, and I agree that for those who do, there need to be strong standards or restrictions for fairness reasons, but let's not throw all the babies out with the bath water. Good series, appreciate the work you have put in. Don't be afraid to ask more pointed questions of guests as your knowledge grows. It is a fascinating topic, even though the surrounding static has gotten very stressful. Carry on! good work!

And I said many male pros, not Nadal or Federer, although on their off days and her best, she mighta done it. Learning to read slower and more carefully can also be a friend. I witnessed Laura Davies driving a ball 300 yards in a Solheim Cup match against Beth Daniels in the 90s. She did it all the time. I played college baseball,; I am tall. I have rarely driven a ball 300 yards. Dr Hooven seems like an fiery, interesting person, although a bit radical right in her self righteousness. But Lance left out the part where she is married to a strong, also very right wing, anti-trans activist, which seems rather pertinent to the subject, wouldn't you say?
