Carl Zeiss T* Planar 50mm f1.4 ZF - sample images / bokeh
praguelenshunter
Hello,
here is a set of sample images showing bokeh and overall rendering of this 50mm lens, that is one of my all time favourites. Compared to the older Contax/Yashica or Rollei 50/1,4 Planars this one has punchier colours and crispier micro contrast, but still that old Planar feel. I also love that strong 3D-feel, that is achieved when focusing on certain distances.
All images shot wide open @ f1.4 with Sony A9 using elec. shutter only (with no effect on bokeh). Cheap Nikon - Sony E-mount adapter was used - some of the strong flares/light leaks might be the result of that.

Zeiss Planar on Sony....This Combo Rock's!!
that bokeh is so good
This has been the most helpful review, so far- to pesuade me to buy the lens. I already shoot with the Milvus and the old Pancolars; but the Planar seems to be unique, in it's own, special way. Your photo, @4.56; finally convinced me, that I need this lens, too!

Itsan amazing lens. These old zeiss lenses are so amazing. It really makes me wonder how fortunate some photographers were to own these in the old days.

thank you, good to hear that....this Planar is very special to me, but the other Planars are amazing as well...maybe some samples another day.
That shot @1:33 is unbelievable! What a characterful lens this is.

thank you
I like how the closeup shot of the lense look, specially the glass smooth reflection. What kind of light setup did you use?
What model is this adapter ring?TKS

I am wondering if i should get it for 270$ brand new, hm. For casual use with 5Dc & a7R3.

Depends, Fujifilm S5 pro definitely because they have an F mount or ZE for canon I don't know about modern fuji though
in most shots the bokeh looks pretty busy :( the rest of my classics zeiss lenses do not render that way....

yes the 50/1,4 is quite a different lens from the rest, that makes him special :D The Makro-Planar 50/2 is a good substitute, when looking for smoother bokeh.

@@MangumCo I am using the 50/2 Milvus. It is a fine lens and the bokeh is beautiful. It is also sharp from f2 whereas the 50/1.4 classis is almost usable. Unfortunately, I have sold my copy. Now, I want it back.

it's different because it's a Cosina and not true Zeiss.
Sorry to say so. The BGM is just noise.
Not bad, considering that f/1.4 is the worst aperture on this lens, for which this lens is hated. This lens is more known for microcontrast, color and 3D-pop. All this begin from f/2 up.
Sorry but horrible music. Good photos.
that bokeh looks really harsh to me. This lens not good compared to the old true contax planars, these modern ones are manufactured for zeiss by a cheaper company

Yes, majority of modern mass Zeiss lenses are manufactured and even developed in Japan - except for special purposes lenses, like cinema or Otus line for example, still made and developed in Germany

@@iisanvar All Zeiss lenses are and were developed at Zeiss in Germany and later elsewhere too. There is or 15mm ZM (for Leica Mount) which was made in Germany until recently. This one was the last photographic lens that has been produced in Germany. Hasselblad lenses and Contax Zeiss lenses were made in Germany and Japan. Since the digital area of Hasselblad their lenses were made by Fuji for the H series. The X1D series has new lenses which are made by Nittoh Japan. Kyocera stopped the collaboration with Contax and therefore Zeiss was looking for a new partner in Japan. The new partner has become the reowned company of Cosina. Cosina has build a lot of expertise of being an OEM manufactuer for many companies, including Nikon. It made for Zeiss more sense to get lenses produced through someone else in Japan region during the early 2000's. The camera market in Japan was a lot stronger back then. Today all photographic Zeiss lenses are made by Cosina, including the OTUS. Cinema lenses are built in Oberkochen Germany. They are built in Germany because they demand a different technology and need more precision ... so Zeiss said once.
Great gear awful photographer
