Carl I wish you had stayed with us a bit longer, you were the soul of the band and kept them going through the rough times and eventually got Brian back a bit of sanity, it got you in the end though and for that I am truly sorry you were so caring and honest and you and your talent are so missed. 💔

As someone who's lived with (and loved) a person suffering from clinical depression, everything Carl says from 3:46-5:00 hits so hard. If you're not very knowledgable about mental illness (which was basically impossible to be up until quite recently, especially back in the early Beach Boys days), it's so difficult to detect the symptoms. People with depression (and mental illness in general) get so incredibly good at pretending that everything's fine, especially in a time where there was still a lot if stigma around it. And even if you get to know about your loved ones' mental problems, it's so immensely diffcult to actually help, bc basically all you can do is be there for them. You can't cure shit, you can only encourage them to get professional help (which the BBs did, not knowing how bad that would turn out as well...). Apart from that, all change has to come from themselves and you yourself are left with extreme frustration exactly bc there's nothing you could do. I can't imagine how Carl and the others must've felt watching Brian basically fall apart, not knowing how they could help him. I wonder how all of this would've gone down had there been as much social awareness and acceptance around mental illness as today - I'm so glad kids these days are very much into mental health and self-care, so that maybe a life like Brian's could be avoided ❤❤❤

What a brilliant insightful post, I often think that, when people moan about Mike for instance, it was his cousin who was being given all these drugs that messed him up, no wonder he got fed up with all the hangers on....

@@LucyHall1thanks ❤❤ tbh tho I don't think that the drugs were the root of the problem, rather a symptom. Many people with depression resort to substance abuse (or if they did drugs/alcohol before depression developed, then there's often an increase in usage) bc the drugs/alcohol gives them at least a short time high, as in not feeling nothing/sad/guilty etc. Brian even said that one of the few good things Landy did for him was explain the difference between a drug-induced high and a natural high. After all, that is the goal in depression/addiction (almost always goes hand in hand) therapy: getting people to feel good BY THEMSELVES again, without dependence on other people or drugs or eating etc. That being said, the types of drugs Brian took like LSD can (and, in his case, did) lead to more physical brain damage as well, especially when there's preconditions at hand like some sort of psychosis, which was definitely the case with Brian as he reported having heard voices BEFORE ever taking drugs. Given his rough childhood and many other factors, I'm pretty sure that he'd been suffering from mental illness (depression, PTSD, maybe some schizoaffective disorder) before drugs/eating etc. ever became a problem. That being said, as much as Mike does seem to me like one of those ignorant people that might downplay mental illness, I do definitely agree that it' easy to imagine him getting frustrated and emotionally affected by being surrounded by so many suffering people as well (Dennis and Carl later also definitely showed symptoms of depression, especially Dennis with his heavy alcoholism). When living with people like that it can very quickly emotionally destroy you if you don't set boundaries and take care of your own mental health (especially since you feel so inadequate as a friend for not being able to help them). They all desperately needed therapy, and by that I mean by modern standards not by 60s/70s standards or Landy's programme.

Thank you for your very thoughtful posts. I would just add a couple more things. First, I believe the prescription drugs that Landy administered to Brian in the 1980s caused a lot more brain damage than the illegal drugs Brian did in the 1960s and 1970s. Second, Carl was going through so much with Brian and Landy at the time of this interview that he didn't let on. In the early 1990s Carl really took the lead in wrenching Brian from Landy's clutches, and it really took a lot out of him.

Is this the first interview with Carl Wilson you have watched? Because he is a very soft spoken and thoughtful person in each and every interview I have ever seen. Same is said by ALL who have met him. His own family said he exuded a sense of quiet and calmed the air around him.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carl approx. 10 x's. He ALWAYS made you feel as if it was his pleasure to meet you rather than you meeting him. He was always so kind and humble. Sadly missed when he passed so did the BB. Mike is a jerk in person trust me personal experinece

TheCraig8754 I am just so sad I never had the chance to see Carl in concert,it's so sad that we had to lose him at age 51. He had so much talent was very under rated and gave so much to the band when Brian was ill, he was the heart and soul for a long time. You were very lucky to have met him, every time I watch him performing I end up in tears and wish he was still here with us. Mike Love is still pouncing about calling himself the Beach Boys, unbelievable.

@@spactick it's a rather long story but I'll be happy to share it. When I was 14 a local theater would sometimes hold concerts. I was leaving a movie one Saturday and the guy behind the counter asked if I liked the BB he said the tickets just when on sale. It costs $4.00 . Unlike today and didn't really know were me seat was however my mom knew I really liked Cary and she told me to hold up a sign to ask if i could shake his hand. Well long story short my ticket was in the front row right in front of Carl. I was so scared to the hold up the sign but I finally did . I saw Carl glance at the sign and he nodded up and down. I didn't think much of it but a few songs later an usher pointed to me and motioned for me to follow him. Some how I thought I was in trouble but he brought me backstage and told me stand here. When the show was over the first one to come through the curtain was Dennis he tasseled my hair with his sweated hand and said good show wasn't it then came Carl . He reached out his hand and said "hi I'm Carl " I was so nervous but he was so calming and put me at ease. We chatted for a few minutes he never rushed me. I told him I bought a guitar and we talked about that for a while. He was such a GREAT guy. I was at he very last show in NJ . I didn't realize how sick he was. If I had know I might have tried one last time to talk with him however in hindsight that might not have been respectful.

@@TheCraig8754 great story The Craig. I followed the Beach Boys from their very beginning in 61'. I liked pretty much all of them but felt a little more of a connection to Carl because we were the same age. He seemed to be the little chubby brother in the group, but matured into a handsome confident adult. I only saw them live once in 1966 when they played at the Cow Palace here in San Francisco. The concert wasn't that great. They didn't sound the same as they did on their records, but I was glad to have seen them.

The Beach Boys were one of the most influential bands ever - the only band that The Beatles envied (endorsed by George Martin although we don't need him to confirm it), Without 'Pet Sounds', there would be no ' Sgt Pepper's ! Brian was pure genius and Carl was one of the best singers ever so Cas Gerald, you are entitled to your opinion but don't belittle someone who is of the like we probably won't see again in our lifetime !

Americans probably won't know Cathy McGowan. She presented the iconic Brit 1960s TV show called Ready Steady Go. She was only 19 or 20 yrs old. Ready Steady Go! (RSG) was first broadcast in August 1963, coinciding with the rise of the Beatles in Britain and internationally. As one historian of television reflected in the 1970s, "the revolution had the greatest possible effect on television ... and hindsight commentators were to see the year (1963) as a line of demarcation drawn between one kind of Britain and another". With its slogan, "the weekend starts here"

It’s so sad that cancer took Carl so early. He seemed like he got his problems under control. He had a few issues I think with drugs and alcohol but he wasn’t as far gone as his brothers, he went to rehab and by this point he had his life together. Then unfortunately he got cancer. RIP

His face when he says "Still Cruisin"... he seems embarrassed. Quite right too, as Carl was the only Beach Boy during this tacky sideshow era (with Brian sporadically absent and Dennis, sadly departed) to have any semblance of cool, class and taste. I loved how he dressed all in black to counteract Mike, Bruce and Al's garish Hawaiian-shirted nostalgia circlejerk.

Carl had his own band and albums around this time, so I think he was more happy about that. He went Solo. Al was the middleman just happy to be there, so was Bruce. Mike hung onto the past not looking foward.

@@danerd8978 In 1989 Carl was firmly a Beach Boy. They have just released the Still Crusin' album. Carl's solo albums and tours were six years earlier.

Dennis inadvertently had a real creepy brush with Charles Manson and The Manson Family. It started with Dennis picking up two female hitch hikers. The conversation got around to "oh you'd love our friend "Charlie". Make a long story short The Manson's started to take over Denis's House to the point where he would't even go back to his own home anymore.

May be what I will say is nonsense but, Carl had to deal with the emotional and drinking problems of his brothers, I don´t know if that took him to his cancer. Sometimes we have to be so strong, that we break inside and our body pays the consecuences. So sad he didn´t have to have that desease and die. And what´s ironic is that the weakest brother is still alive.

The most talented brother is still alive. If Brian was emotionally the weakest it's because as the oldest he took the first brunt of the violence of Murry Wilson. And as the most talented he was responsible for most of the creative work. The real amazing issue is that after all of Brian's psychological and physical problems, plus being the oldest, is that he is the only brother still alive. This could be comprable to what has happened also to Barry Gibb. The oldest and still standing in behind the mic.

Carl was a heavy smoker from about the time he was 14. That probably had more to do with his cancer than anything.

When I was very young, I thought Dennis Wilson was the coolest. He was a surfer boy, a cool drummer and very, very cute. I wanted to meet Dennis and thought he was the most attractive looking of all the Beach Boys and so much sex appeal. As I got older though, Dennis became less attractive to me. I saw Dennis as this very troubled guy and not so nice demeanor. Carl Wilson, with his humble and down to earth personality and so intelligent won my heart.....

Dennis was the Beach Boys' resident "rebel without a cause'. Had he kicked his drug habit and if Carl had never smoked, they might still be alive today.

Yes, Gene was a scoundrel, and perhaps it was the other therapy he received would have helped, but he disciplined Brian into shape, and Brian is still alive

Same with me. I had a huge crush on Dennis until 1978, when I saw the Beach Boys live in concert. All three of the Wilson brothers were trainwrecks that year. I was right up front, so I got a good look at Dennis and Carl. Brian was at the opposite side and behind the piano. Dennis was a complete mess. Carl was a mess too, but he had the kindest face and I felt there was something worth saving there. It was that day that Carl became my favorite Beach Boy.

OK, as a teenager in the '60's, I had a record player, that would drop another record, when the last one ended. I'd pile on, 5 current Beach Boys albums, and let them play, as I went to sleep. No amplifier, just the sound from the stylus. Later, I'd hear one of these songs, and sing along. Didn't even know the lyrics. Or, so I thought. steve

Carl was wise beyond his years even as a teenager. He had a maturity about him that his brothers didn't have. I'm not sure if the "baby sibling" syndrome applies to him, but as far as I know, he was the only one his father was never tough on. Carl's only "weakness" was cigarettes, a habit he picked up at a young age---never sure why---but it eventually killed him

Carl was the quiet sensitive child. Also, for the cigarettes thing, it was common for pre-millennial youth to pick up somoking because back then it was semi-legal for kids to smoke.

Murry was tough on Carl, but not as tough as he was on Dennis and Brian. Also, Carl had Dennis as his protector from Murry. Also, just living in a house where you regularly see and hear your brothers get the sh*t kicked out of them by your father is abuse in itself.

Colin Powell - Entertainer From 1985 ON...... I wish to God someone had insisted upon PET scan, thorough blood work, etc, etc. I will always believe that he was unwell LONG before his actual diagnosis. Gina!!!!!! Where were you ?????

YES.. Tired and definitely UNWELL. It is so clear to me that something is not right. I wish I'd been in Gina's position! He would have been seeing every specialist, western medicine practitioner, naturopath, nutritional advisor. Etc, Etc..under the Sun. Tragedy that he died at aged 51 and 2 months. It sickens and saddens me, to this day.

I disagree. Mike was a passenger, but the others were all very talented. Brian, of course, was the best songwriter, but Carl, Dennis and Al all contributed to the sound of the Beach Boys.

What an embarrassment to have Carl be a part of that 80s Mike Love bullshit
