Cargo Trailer Camper at Minus 15F Degrees !

I wondered if my NuWay propane heater would be able to warm up our little camp trailer at sub zero temperatures. It was minus 12 INSIDE the trailer to start! Watch the video to see how it performed.

What I see in this video is a man that likes hanging out in his fort he built. Nothing better than hanging out in your camp. Just as when your a kid and built some sort of shelter in the back yard or a blanket over a couple of chairs. The kid never leaves some of us inside. Nice camper.

Indeed. The air supply only needs to be a fraction more than the volume of propane being combusted. A 1" air supply is probably plenty for a heater that small. Assess by looking at the flame...if at least 2/3 blue, you're fine.

It's good to enjoy simple things and ponder on what is good and wholesome. So often we forget to be thankful for the little things. I rebuild vintage trailers, and I can't tell you the joy of finding old bubble front frigs from the 40's that still purr, and vintage propane heaters from 1950 (panelray) that are just waiting to have you enjoy a coffee in front of while the snow falls. I think it pleases God when we quit getting and recline into thank you.Thank you new friend. I used to go to Bisbee's Shady Dell vintage RV park for the winter and Loved it. Great memories. Even got married in Tombstone by Judge Murphy in the circuit court. Life is truly a gift.

Drill a 1" hole behind the stove just below the body height of the stove so you can draw air in at that point then put a pipe in with a bend on it pointing up into the stove. Put a downward facing bend outside so when you are driving no debris gets settles into it. That will allow it to draw fresh air in for the stove and if you are sleeping in the trailer.

Wood is free, and still works at -40c, just so happens to be the same in fahrenheit-40f, eh ;) The best would be a hybrid stove that uses either or? Yes a fresh air intake would make a big difference for heat.

I had a wall heater that had a exhaust center, intake middle, and outer safety barrier. So I never had any inside air loss or drafts. It was a nice propane and I had high mounted propane tanks with a auto switch over dual tank valve outside and a ⅜ copper tubing routed from the front high on the wall to the rear heater. The inside copper tubing absorbed heat to help the fuel vaporize. It was a insulated 80"x80" topper like on a ½ Ford 4wd with Firestone Air bags added on Michelin tires with very firm side walls. I used it as a sleeper when the semi was in the shop as the terminal was 160 miles from home. I had a tow bar set up so I could drive my Kenworth and then take the pick up home or to a truckstop with a cafe and showers if the Kenworth was done for days. The heater kept me warm and toasty.I had a twin bed tilt up with a small sofa area under the bunk for the dog. I had TV and etc too. A bucket camp toilet system. and 12 volt.120volt inverter stuff for food and drinks. Always carried lots of water. I had a shut off switch for the battery so I could go trucking for a month and restart the truck without a jump. I could park anywhere and sleep. No one Knew I was here. I had to make a heavy duty steel escape hatch as some clowns locked me in at the terminal. So I had a dutch door and and escape hatch. I had little crank glass windows cubes for air and ventilation. Being in Minnesota, I was not worried about air conditioning. The roof was heavy duty and I could still atop it and watch sporting events from a folding canvas aluminum chair under a sun umbrella. I had a little ladder I mounted for roof access with a grab bar to complete the climb.

You can line the roof of the trailer with solar panels and charge a battery which can power a heater on a thermostat. You can build a battery pack out of old laptop or tool batteries. 1 or 2 go bad but the other 6 or so have years left in them. You can buy some Samsung 25r 18650 for $4. Very easy to do at home and cheap.

Awesome. You answered my question b4 I had a chance to ask it. Ty I did however noticed something on your video which I thought it to be troubled. Hope you don't mind me giving you a useful tip. You had your fire extinguisher right next to the fire source (the stove) in an event of a fire it is human nature to run away. Perhaps putting the extinguisher at arms reach from the door (exit) would serve duel purpose. 1) escape , cause your life is worth a lot more than the trailer. 2) you can fight the fire from the doorway. Just my 2 cents. Ty for the video, I always wondered if a setup like that would be worth it. I like it .

Something you might consider would be the logistics of the heater in the trailer. As you mentioned the exhaust going up the chimney is being replaced by cold air coming into the trailer, in this case because you open the window but regardless it would find its way in there. If your stove had an outside source of air which many of them do and yours can be retrofitted to have it, I know for sure you would not be taking the air that is heated already in the trailer and sending it up the chimney.

I'm wondering about the theory of heat flow here. Propane tanks draw heat from the air to vaporize the liquid propane inside. This is demonstrated by the more tank surface area the better they vaporize. Therefore the MORE surface area exposed to the MORE air flow generates more heat to vaporize and insulating tanks is counterproductive.

Duh, anything burned incompletely will create an undesired byproduct. Just do a test run for a few hours the look at the open flame to confirm it's blue. It's pretty tough to NOT completely combust an open-burning propane flame, such as what the OP is using. Unvented propane combustion is used every day in American with no ill effect. Non-industrial grade CO detectors give a false sense of security...my eyeball and flame color observation is far more reliable.

Xcaliber Trekker So long as it is a 12V fan operating off a ~12-14V supply it will run fine for many thousands of hours (even junk muffin fans tend to have at least a 2,000 hour rated life, or about 3 months of 24/7 operation, and usually greatly exceed that figure). Muffin fans are available with a wide range of fan speeds depending upon how many cubic feet (or meters) of air you wish to move per minute, but the high volume ones are very loud as they fan is rotating at tens of thousands of RPM to achieve that airflow rate. They are really quite tolerant of abuse and are actually brushless DC motors. The simplest way to slow things down is to either buy a lower air volume muffin fan as a replacement or install either a resistor of voltage regulator inline so that they run at a lower effective voltage, which will both slow them down a good bit as well as quiet them considerably (even small reductions in fan speed yield large reductions in sound level). To give you an idea how resilient they can be, I once ran a 12VDC muffin fan off 120VAC for about a minute before shutting it down after realizing I had grabbed the wrong fan...and that 12VDC fan still works even after that bit of abuse (you would not believe the amount of air that fan moved at 10 times the voltage...I was surprised it didn’t start a hurricane!).

@@gonagain It makes NO SENSE to spend 5 figures on a trailer and then be forced to spend green money to take it out of and then put it back into service by "wintering" for several months of the year. A modern automobile has a fully automated climate control system that simply works with hardly any effort or attention. Your recreational trailer needs the same capability. In my small town in Northern Wisconsin, a homeless woman is living in a van (broken down - in need of repairs). She has been here for a couple of months, through the coldest part of February when temps dropped to 30 degrees below 0 (Farhrenheit). Mostly she is using white gas in some kind of stove, and getting a lot of help from townspeople. She won't go into a shelter because she has two small cats and two small dogs, and she refuses to leave them. Between bouts of arctic air, we have been getting clobbered with snow (over four feet in February alone), which piles up on the top of her van, melts from the heat inside, and seeps into the cracks of the doors causing them to freeze. Several times she has been trapped in the van. Fortunately, she has a phone and internet and she can ask for help on her Facebook page - so far somebody has always come to her rescue.
