@@samnicolson1197 given mandated diversity training I'd say it takes a few years to readjust to the real world (I get it, don't be a dick but what does diversity and inclusion have to do with engineering? You can do the maths or ya can't) but I see ya point. Personally I think nursing should start as an apprenticeship type deal with university at the end to become an RN, I've known some great nurses, as for teachers, can't stand most of em, I couldn't do my field of preference professionally so let me teach it (re history and science teachers) again I see ya point. I just know too many people who went to uni and lost their grip on reality. Especially union types, straight from uni into union offices, I think they should have a mandated muddying of the trowel period so they can get a feel of what apprentices and tradesmen have to live with before they head into a union office. Again. The cmfeu probably poisoned my mind over unions, but point stands, worlds become too suit and tie focused, and not labour focused. Like I'd vote Labor every time if they'd drop the whole identity politics, like we're all Aussies, that should be the unifying factor not ethnic voting mafias.

Like no one wants to admit they can be wrong I get it, but when credentialism takes priority over new and different avenues of thought I just get shitty. And when I hear uni student or graduate I just think of credentialism

A friend who works for an international airline told me recently that international corporations don’t pay GST. For example, you pay GST on a ticket booked with them, but at tax time they claim all GST they paid back on their tax bill. Just another loophole to rort the tax system and rip off Australians. Maybe Labor could look at fixing that…

the tax was designed to only apply to the final retail sale. if it were not so, think what it would be like if the airline paid gst on the purchase of the aeroplane, the aeroplane manufacturer paid gst on the materials & parts & energy they use, the parts suppliers did likewise & the materials suppliers paid gst on what they bought from mines etc - & that's to oversimplify matters - some imputs may have a supply chaing going back hundreds of links. so only the end user pays gst, anyone who's on-selling the product for which they paid gst claims that gst back.

  • @hjf3022

This isn't a rort, it's supposed to happen this way so the same product isn't repeatedly subject to the same tax as it makes its way to the consumer. For example, I do computer repair work. If I need to buy a replacement hard drive to fix someone's computer, I need to charge them GST on that item. When I purchase that HDD from the computer store, if I have to pay GST on that like a normal consumer would, then it will have been subject to GST twice. Now if the computer store had to pay GST on it when they bought it, it will have been subject to GST three times, and so on. This would obviously be a very crappy system, and that's why it doesn't work that way.

Every conservative I know sides with companies because "If you dont work 60 hours a week you are lazy. Unions are bad. you dont need to raise minimum wage, you need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. you should just get another job. you're going to raise my taxes!"

In Queensland, the last time the LNP were in power they ordered trains from India because they were 'cheaper'. They had so many issues with them that it cost millions to retro fit them to be accessible for people with disabilities, the drivers couldn't see where the edge of the stations were to stop, they had communication issues with them. But the worst part of this was that it destroyed the company in Maryborough that made these trains, this has had a flow on impact in this small town where one of the major employers was now gone. This once again is where you need voices from people who work in these industries to be heard before you make a 'textbook economically correct' decision and look at the logistics of what the impact may be to save a million dollars here or there.

The Labor party is actually the party of consultants. In 1985 Keating wanted to "modernise" the ATO so he brought in McKinseys and Booz Allen and other corporate cockroaches to assist in the modernisation of the federal public service startingn with the ATO. They were pulling $2o million or so in those days for their "insights". This was also done in social security as it was then known along with other departments. At the same time the Labor party introduced new contracts for SES staff. The reason this was done was because of the behaviour of old school permanent heads such as Fred Wheeler, Lennie Hewitt, John Stone and so on during 1975. Labor made the public sector less secure so that people like Hewitt etc al could never wield the power they used to wield. In the nearly 40 years since then we have seen the intellectual decline of the public sector . You can see the effects of consultants in everything (the NDIS is a classic example). Keating financialised the Labor party so much that the Labor party has actually got in bed with slimeball financial planners who want to sue AMP because they don't think it has given them enough money under buyer of last resort agreements. Now Jordan, you need to to realise that one of the reasons the Libs hated Keating so viscerally was that he beat them at their own game. He always wanted to piss upon the Tory cretins who inhabited stockbroking and he achieved that with Industry Funds Management. But Labor is actually no longer a workers' party so just get rid of that delusion. The Tories are execrable for all sorts of other reasons but you actually need to understand that Labor is not Mother Theresa.

It's interesting fj brings this up. On one hand, I think more people need to get involved in politics, esp local. These days, being informed isn't enough you need to be proactive if you want to see change. On the other hand, people I know who do get involved with the major parties very quickly become disillusioned or get pushed out because there's too many 'party before policy/country' types in these groups. I suppose if people joined these parties in droves it would help tackle the problem and keep things grounded, but idk I'm sceptical.

Homeless families gonna love visiting Southbank I guess, while we stare down the barrel of I'm gonna say a 99.99% likely summer flood which invariably includes Southbank itself going underwater. The number one thing Australia could do is maybe ditch the idea that the parties should be able to decide the leader without input from the rank and file membership. Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn were both popular among rank and file membership but were vetoed by the executive of the party. Also, the problem isn’t “money in politics”, we live under capitalism and as long as we do it will be impossible to achieve sustainable outcomes for working people. Case and point: the ALP idea of “accords”, accords are agreements made in-between unions, business and government, the problem is that it’s impossible to have an outcome which benefits every one of those parties. Business and unions have irreconcilable differences which cannot be ignored, and every “accord” the ALP has struck has ended up benefiting business in the long-term at the expense of unions and regular people.

I think all politicians should have at least 5 years real-world job experience (including actual research academia). Barndoor was only an accountant for a short time before becoming a pollly, same for Gillard who was a pretty unsuccessful lawyer prior to politics. But assuming tradies are the lower-end of earners is a bit of a mistake as they earn well above the median on average (starting off at about $10k above the median wage). Also it is a mistake not to treat union interests the same as business interests. Remember the issue with the wharfies vs the farmers where the wharfies were gouging the market and attempted to use their union to stop any form of competition. The other issue is the kind of people who join political parties while young, they tend to be 'true believers' who will always believe whatever the party says, regardless of the actual evidence.

@@smithynoir9980 The issue with overreach is a problem in every facet of this, a lot of the middle-aged people will remember the fear-mongering and anti-competitive stances of a lot of unions. Some of us even remember unions being busted for running protection rackets. They have also been anti-competitive frequently in the past (see the docks issue above), is a union good to protect worker's rights? yes. Is a union that has no competition or regulation a good thing? no. look at the laws repealed for construction holding the builders and engineers accountable for major defects that were rolled back in the 80''s/90's, these were at the instigation of the construction union. TBH I think we need a balance between business owners and unions, but mostly we need to also remember that the trades and union members are no longer the lowest paid in society and have not been for a very long time and also that a LOT of union members also own businesses as well so the unions are not always about the workers specifically, but also those business interests.

The liberal party always tries to pass off rubbish privatization, corporate welfare, and deliberately low wage growth as 'econ 101'. However what they leave out is that econ 101 you're taught about economics in theory, in econ 202 you learn about economics as practiced, and econ 303 you learn about application in new and specific scenarios. Starting to think the LNP is full of people who took econ 101 then dropped the rest because they were majoring in either marketing or real estate and only required 101 as a pre-req. BTW yes I know, some LNP members studied corporate finance and they would've had to do the later econ subjects, so they would understand these things. But let's be real if you're a member of the LNP and you study corporate finance you're likely indifferent to the public's best interest anyways as that's often at odds with the interests of daddy's portfolio, so learning about it is more of an intellectual exercise than anything you'd actually care to implement.

The higher ups (chief of staff MPs ect) are good to work with but the current of fuckery runs deep amongst the bottom feeders. Branch stacking is rife at least it was in 2014-2017, people play factions off against each other for power and the unions try to strong arm factions into what they think is best. Labor from what I've seen is a fucking rabble of plebians who barely understand the Westminster system let alone the philosophies and ideas that have allowed it to function reasonably well for several hundred years. As a long term member of the NSWTF Council etc. I was one of several who tried to have officers required, as had been past policy, to have limited tenure in the building before being having to return to teaching, if only for a couple of years. As a result of the union becoming the employer/super provider/crèche for careerists the actions, policies and activities of the union moved away from the members and was based around people who would insist it was "their turn" to be a senior officer etc. These professionals created/run the factions that became the policy engine of the formerly strongest education union in the nation.

good luck with that. Branches are stacked and pre-selections and delegate positions are controlled by unions and factions

@@123maxABC Those "Unions and Factions" are made up of members who choose policy and platform and vote for both delegates and candidates. Just like how Australians vote for ministers who often come from parties. That's just how democracy works.

@@smithynoir9980 I am alluding to the fact that in the current online discourse even the Labor party is even considered a right wing party. It seems that anything that is not far progressive leftism is right wing by default. I think it displays why it is important that the Labor party is composed of real working people and not career politicians.
