Executive soviet car:
GAZ-13 "Chaika" is a Soviet executive passenger car of a large and executive class, produced in a small series at the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1959 to 1981. He replaced the ZIM generation model GAZ-12. Starting with this model, this (large) class of cars becomes privileged: their mass production stops and they are not allowed to be used by anyone except for certain level leaders, Soviet ambassadors (diplomats) and foreign citizens. In this regard, the palette of possible body colors is also limited. In 1977, the next generation model, the Chaika GAZ-14, came to replace it. Soviet car Chaika.
We are looking for old cars, rare soviet cars, unusual car, abandoned car and rare retro cars, we do reviews, tell tricks and technical characteristics. In general, we are creating the largest archive of videos about the Soviet automobile industry, the history of USSR cars, and the history of the Soviet Union in general.

I grew up in St.Louis Missouri,USA. I was with 2 of my friends, and we were walking to a shopping center. There was a car, one friend said it was a Lincoln, and my other friend, a Cadillac. Even as a teenager, I was pretty good a cars. I told them they were both wrong. It was a Russian car. I told them , and they said I was nuts. Although I called it a ZIL, I was right in that it was Russian. The writing was definitely Russian, it was a Chaika‼️ Exactly what this car was doing in St.Louis County, Missouri, USA, remains a mystery. But , there it was . And a beautiful car, too. 🚗😁

One of the funniest pieces of automotive writing was in Car and Driver around 1985, Bruce McCall's "Socialist Luxobarge Summit Showdown Compare" where he tested the ZIL and the Chinese Hong Chi/ "Red Flag" limousines. It is worth looking it up. McCall describes the cars in great detail, including "suicide doors", presumably "for carrying out harsh sentences en route". Read it, and you will never laugh as hard again.

The Chaika looks like a Checker Marathon and a Packard Patrician had a baby. Can't say I dislike the marriage; the Chaika is a car I'd love to own but never will. At least I have the Marathon, an icon in of itself.

Why? Even Russians back then didn't use them year round. What would be used is a military dress uniform like cap. Russians wear warm clothing (boots, warm hats, coats) for utility. Those items are pretty expensive, so you have one or two of each only. By the time it's warm you are bored of wearing the same thing and would never wear it for fashion. Especially considering that our warm clothes is really warm. So, Russians would object to the idea of summer (fur generally, warm hats, coats, tall boots) and find wearing it for fashion hilarious.

With an X frame reminiscent of 58 through 64 Chevrolet, does it have body connections not just at the front and rear end but also presumably along the driveshaft tunnel? Certainly very fascinating and I know the title says Russian Packard definitely reminiscent of a Packard Patrician from 55 through 56 or a Plymouth Belvedere from 57 or 58, especially that Vibe between the grille and the tail fins. Also wondered since it always seemed like they don't do anything that's not practical in their designs where you were hurting to the bullets in the bumper is the car horn located inside there? Certainly would make sense if it was.

We were always told that when Studebaker and Packard merged, and the decision was made to discontinue the Packard bodies, and base all future Packard cars from Studebaker bodies, that, in order to gain badly needed cash, all the Packard tooling and machinery were sold off, as no longer needed, to the Soviet union. Maybe its not true, but, it sure looks like its true. Thats a near exact copy of the last true packard body. While on that subject, the gaz 24 sure echoes the last Studebaker body by brooks stevens. Studebaker, on its deathbed went looking for a car to rebadge for 1967. They negotiated with toyota and datsun, but the deal fell through, and nothing came of it. The gaz 24 would have been a good choice to rebadge as a Studebaker, and help international relations at the time. It would have been even less difficult considering that Studebaker was only operating in canada by then, whose import/ export laws differed from the states.
