VisioRacer My greatuncle used to have a Volga, although a 4-cylinder one. His wife ended up driving it into my great-grandmother's hay bale. The guy could afford such cars, being part of the private sector. He bought parts from FSO and built Polonezes out of them - and people used to pay a premium for his ones, since they didn't require as much waiting and were better built! Now, he has a Peugeot/Citroen body shop, and drives what he thinks is mechanically the best Citroen - 2nd gen C5 2.0 HDI sedan, no hydros.

During the socialism era in Poland there was an urban legend of child kidnappers driving black GAZ 24 Volgas. In fact there were few black Volgas in every bigger Polish city these times, but these cars were mainly used by the government. But the kids were running away scared when they saw a black Volga anyway :)

I remembered back in the early 90's Car and Driver magazine did an article on the latest Russian made Zil 114. They said sure it looks outdated like a late '60's Chrysler made Imperial LeBaron but that was the only negative feedback on the car. And that the car got the kind of fuel economy from a 6000 pound limo. Then they rate the handmade workmanship and quality of materials used and the reliability record along with room and ride comfort and said this- the Zil 114 is the best car in the world! They also said it was not cheap! Price in USD$75,000!(1992) The automotive press always ridiculed "Commie cars", but not the Zil114!

No politics meant, but as to beauty, especially with lyrics I don't interpret, but feel the emotions; for pure beauty, the USSR, Russian National anthem, so beautiful. My next pick would be the Germany anthem when & now united, music by Haydn. My country, the U.S., Francis Scott Key's lyrics are to the core, but we need better music, something grand by a great 18th or 19th century composer that'll strike love & devotion into Generation X and beyond. My suggestion, the '70's composition, " They're Coming to Take Me Away". I want a Chaika M13 or 4th model year Tatra77; beautiful cars; tell me how I get parts, then how to procure such a car.

I like the Volga's looks. Very 60's US small sedan looks, like a Ford Falcon or Chevy Nova. You should have told the story about that black Tatra. Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, and among other things, took over the Tatra plant. The German officers liked the power the Tatra had and often drove them, but their handling was sketchy as you said, it liked to swap ends suddenly in a curve. Many Nazi officers died in them, they came to be known as the Czech Revenge and I think the Nazis mandated that officers stop driving them.

It's hard to believe you didn't even include two of the most famous, and longest production Soviet Limousines, the ZIS from the 40's into the 50's, and the ZIL, built from the late 50's into several later decades, both based upon the American Packard.
