    funny story, at the time of when i am typing this you can see the fiat 850 in my profile picture, when my mom got her license and started driving the car to school in the late 80s a group of boys lifted the car up in the air, rotated it and almost landed my mom a parking ticket. and then theres the story of my dad's gym teacher, he and his friends lifted his datsun 100a on top of a huge snow pile and the gym teacher couldnt drive the car before early summer.

    the consensus of programmers and manufacturers was for using binary as the basis of the units, until a pretending to be nongovernmental organization decided to rename the consensus units, and make the units with the previously agreed on name smaller, and get this passed as a government imposed standard internationally so, 1024 is the correct definition, unless you are a bureaucrat

    I'd always thought that the computer determines each unit (B, KB, Etc.) in multiples 1024 whereas marketing defines it as 1000, which is why the computer always displays less disk space than what's written on the box

    Only windows uses 1024MB = 1GB, the normal is 1000MB = 1GB, Linux, Mac, iOS, Android uses that, Windows is the minority compared to those OS.

    Lada also copied/reverse engineered the rotary engine. There was 2 and 3 rotor models mainly for KGB use. Only problem was they did their usual and cut corners to save money, so they were not as reliable as the Mazda engines. Also they had a smaller single or 2 venturi carburretor.

    The Oltcit did not rust easily, My dad's Oltcit rusted after 20 years, 5 of which it sat outside and was no longer driven. And the engine was one of the most reliable among all the cars in the video. It's only reliability problem was with the mechanism that controlled the spark plugs. They addressed that with an electronic controller. It was as simple and as functional as they could make it. It was an air cooled boxer4 with a surprisingly nice sound and a redline at 8000 rpm and could go to 10.000 RPM. The engine used a 2 step carburetor. It had no servo and the disk type brakes and steering never failed. It was a 2 door and the rigid structure of it made it one of the safest cars under the iron curtain. The rigid body also made it a lot more nimble that any commie car. The controls on it were up to par with west European cars of the 80-es. The car could hit 150km/h and that was amazing for any of the cars in this video. Fuel consumption was directly tied to the way it was driven. Eco driving made it use about 6-7l /100 km outside of towns and 10-11 in town. Aggressive driving made it use over 13-15 l/100 km.

    Maluch used to be the most popular family car in Poland (5ppl + luggage and we're going on vacation cross the country) Now prices of Polski Fiat are incredibly high. Great vid!

    I remember when you will able to buy a Fiat 126p for about 100zł, which about 25 euro. This car is a crap, but i guess it was worth couple of dollars. Definetely not worth 3k euro.

    Nice list. Here in Hungary in the 80's Lada, Trabant, Wartburg, Polski and Dacia were the most common. In our eyes the Skoda was already a "western" car, not many of that were running here. You left out the Zaporozhets, the Moskvich and the Zastava.

    I think this is one of your most interesting video's. I remember a Skoda joke where they put the engine in the rear because when it broke down and you had to push it the engines heat would warm your hands up.

    Your talking complete bollox, the only reliability issues were VERY occasionally overheating, the Skoda models of this era were of a genuine Czech design and highly contemporary, Skoda, s of this era never had any serious reliability problems, which if you had one you would know.

    Actually overheating was a common issue, everyone new that skodas are boiling the coolant. However, this was not an inherent flaw: the real cause was the poor maintenance, for the long pipelines and some other factors, the cooling of rear engined skodas is very sensitive, and most owner just never changed coolant fluids, or simply mixed tap water. While other commie cars tolerated such negligence quite well the skoda did not, as the formation of lime and rusty gunk in the radiators and pipes hindered cooling performabce noticably. However, with proper maintenece this is never an issue: the system is actually absolutely not underengeneered: Rapids, Gardes, and even LR replicas tuned well over 100bhp, paricipating in historc rally events are usually running with their stock radiators, without any problem...

    What your actually saying is that without regular maintenance the skodas would overheat?, my S110r coupe overheated once! rear mounted radiator belt driven fan, My 120L overheated once! front mounted radiator electric fan, tubes going underneath to rear, I had my vehicles serviced regularly, when the 120 overheated it was in winter time and my garage advised me to let the car warm up completly before driving off because the coolant in the front radiator could still be cold whilst that surrounding the engine could be warm forming a thermo bloc, might have been "BS" but took this advice and it never happened again, the S110r just simply overheated after having driven about 2 hundred miles then becoming stuck in a traffic jam, stop- start etc, and couldnt get the temperature down, I dont call these serious issues, rather unfortunate incidents with mitigating circumstances

    I had 4 rear engined Skoda's in my youth; 2 x 1984 Estelles and 2 x 1988 Rapid Coupes. Let's be clear, this design did NOT have an overheating problem. This would only occur if the cooling system developed a leak and air bubbles were in the cooling pipes. Replacing leaking hoses or otherwise sealing any water leaks and successfully refilling the system with coolant usually cured the problem. The design was prone to water leaks as it got older, but this could usually be prevented by replacing all the original solutions used for tightening the hoses. I'm happy to say this worked a treat, and made most of my Skodas immune to water leaks. This was a car whose water tank you checked everyday - just in case. And yes, I often carried 2 x 2 litre bottles of water on both sides of the engine compartment - just in case :-)

    We used to have the Volga as Taxis in Iraq, and they used to have the V6 engine, were highly sought in urban areas as their suspension was considered to be tough and durable on gravel.

    Yeah, it is a really reliable no-nonsense off-road vehicle. I've seen numerous Lada Nivas in Switzerland of all places! There they have enough money to buy whatever car they want to.

    My grandfather had a 'Moskovitch' in the 1960's/70's, it was a rare car here in the UK, as were most Soviet made goods, he had a Cistrad Soviet radio too. We could buy Zenit camera's and they were pretty good, reliable and cheap 35mm film cameras, and Soviet USSR made

    I’m from USSR, a part of which now bacame Kazakhstan. We had a chery VAZ 2106 and beige VAZ 21063 Zhigulis, which will always be in heart, as part of childhood. VisioRacer, you rock. Not many people along exUSSR who are not as into cars as you (and me) are, would know many of these cars from other Eastern Block countries! Thanks a lot

    Fun fact: The Škoda 1000 MB and it's counterparts were infamous for overheating, caused by the radiator being sandwitched between the back seat and engine only being cooled by two side wents. To remedy this the 105 moved the radiator to the front, insanely increasing the ammount of coolant needed in the car that caused it's heater in the winter to be almost useless since it used the flow of the coolant to heat the cabin. And due to the long cooling tubes it whould take ages for all the coolant to heat up. Also the Trabant's heating was done by a shroud that was wraped around the exhaust pipe, and used the airflow of the main ventilator to blow the heat into the cabin, so if the exhaust happened to crack (which it did) you had a quick ticket to co2 poisioning

    Where is Zaporozac and Moskvitch? I grew up in ex-YU and Skoda was the most reliable car, Zaporozac was the cheapest, it was ugly but one needed only 6 month salary to buy one. Polish Polonez was good too. Domesticaly made Zastava was piece of crap. We had lots of overpriced British, French and German imports as well. The worst in terms of reliability was British made Austin, then German NSU Prinz breaks down after a year of driving, and French cars were comfy but you don't want to drive it too far. Anyway, the narrative is that eastern cars are bad but Skoda is way better than majority of western cars. Russian Lada was just as good as Skoda but for some reason more expensive.

    Don't understand why British cars get a bad rap, it hasn't been my experience.....I've owned a 1974 Triumph TR6 since 1983 and a 1989 Jaguar XJS since new. The TR6 had a new starter in 1986 and new tires in 1999. The V~12 Jaguar now has over 200,000 miles on it and runs and looks great....only real problem has been the GM supplied air~ conditioning, the passenger side electric window stopped working for a few weeks in the early '90's, but fixed itself and has worked fine ever since. I have regretted only one car, a Porsche 911S, sold it at 36,000 miles, truly a horrible automobile, it ran for only 2 months out of a year, and cost a fortune to keep up(plus it was to complicated to work on it yourself). BTW: love the Soviet and E. European cars, being from the S.E. U.S.A., I have never seen one in person.

    DecaturCentaur they used to be common here in Canada. We had Ladas, Skodas, and of course Yugos. Lada was the fastest growing automotive brand in Canada during the 80s but by 97 the left our market. You still see the odd one but most have been scrapped

    Back in the mid 1990's one of my friends Dad had an old LADA-1200 in a lime green colour, he paid £50. for it as the old guy who had it from new had died . We always took the PISS. With it being a Lada and all the rest. But also because it had a starting handle hole in the bumper. But 95/96 was a COLD winter in South West Scotland ( By Our Standard's ). A time when a lot of modern cars of the time would not even start let alone be able to drive, in the frozen snow. He got his own back as he drove past us all with frozen not starting modern car's.. I must ask him next time I see him. What happened to the LADA 1200.

    Before the start of the first Hungarian Grand Prix in 1986, which has been written to the F1 history as the first Grand Prix on the other side of the Iron Curtain, the legendary Ayrton Senna had an interesting task for the organisers: he wanted to drive around the circuit with a car, that an average Hungarian citizen had in that time. So they gave him a Lada, and he pushed the hell out of it for that one lap. :D

    Rear engine cars, eg Skoda (and also Renault, Tatra, etc) have always had a bad press, mainly for poor handling. Yet F1 cars are all all rear engine, rear wheel drive,.

    I am from Western Europe, and apart from Syrena and Olcit all of the mentioned brands were present in my country. Especially Skoda Lada and the Polish version of Fiat 126 were popular. And frankly, I don't think cars from the communist part of the world were any worse than the cheaper vehicles from Western Europe, when you compare price tags. But back then, when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's, the japanese began to take over the market here because they were able to combine low prices and higher quality. But that's a whole different story. Great video, btw

    Great video. Lada 1200 0:10 was a good car. It was a real winter car. It started well, it was warm, it moved well in the snow. It was simple, easy to fix, cheap. Okay, it was not Mercedes, but it came from place A to place B

    You forgot the Moskvitch 412 and the ZAZ 968 Zaporozhet. The Moskvitch sold very well here in the UK and saw successful rallying in the 1970's. The Zaporozhet was probably the most unreliable car ever made due it's engine being fitted with timing gears made from fiber! It was to reduce engine noise but being made of fiber the gears would shed teeth from being softened from leaking oil rendering the car completely un-drivable. The British Ford V4 engine had a fiber timing gear which too made it an unreliable engine.

    Ladas and Skodas were quite popular in the UK in the 1970s and 80s. Yes, they were the butt of a lot of jokes, but the truth was that the ones with UK specs were often a lot more durable and performed better than some UK made cars of the same era. Thanks for this video, it was very interesting.

    Great work, showing those who never visited behind the Iron Curtain, the motor scene there. Some of the models were sold in England in the 1970s as "low cost" alternatives to the West European models. Among these, the Warburg, the rear-engined Skodas, and one you did not mention, the 4-door saloon and station wagon Moskvich. In Israel, many Russian immigrants in the early 90s brought the Fiat 124 style Lada with them.

    Chase Watkins I agree they sound similar and both have low compression ratio so the power output is quite low but they can run on low octane fuel. I'm not sure but i think volga engine is pushrod not flathead.

    Another side of owning a car in USSR never mentioned was maintenance and repair. Cars were very low quality and required lots of it. And in USSR it was horrific nightmare. That was the reason I never wanted to have a car in USSR seeing what hell all the car owners I knew had to go thru. In the fall of 1974 my friend offered me a ride from Yalta, Crimea to Simferopol Airport via mountain road. He was going pretty slow making me worrying about missing my plane. After top of the mountain pass when the road went 20 something km downhill he slowed down even more and his car started sounding strange, like no other car I heard before. I caught my plane OK and while thanking him for the ride I mentioned him being very careful driver. He explained: "My brake pads are completely worn out and I can not find new ones anywhere! Even on black market! So..... I was going 20+ km DOWNHILL thru the MOUNTAIN ROAD in a car with NO BRAKES.

    The Tatras look very cool....The Syrena is cute too...I like the Volga.....Lots of Skodas on the road in Ireland when I was a kid.Funny how they seem much prettier now than they did then....We had Ladas from the 1980's onwards...We also had Polski Fiats and I seem to remember a few Polonez too...

    Hell yeah, I'll subscribe! I've not seen many of these cars before, and I definitely didn't know that the Volga was ever built with a V8 (that the example shown sounded like a small block Chevy at a stoplight just made it that much cooler!). I want one now, and I REALLY want one of those Tatras, as I've never seen anything production with a rear mounted V8! That is just badass, though I can imagine how twitchy that car could get with that rear engine... You missed one though (and I'm guessing it's because it's hard to find one). Zil! Because any rich slob can ride in a Mercedes...

    They made 2 million Dacia 1300/1310, more than any Skoda model you mention in this video. The Aro 24 was in high demand in western countries with most cars being exported. They were also manufactured in Spain and Portugal. The Mercedes G Klasse was inspired by the Aro 24.

    My father in law had an ARO for 25 years. 2nd man in his village to own a car. Purchased in in 1980/81. I drove that ARO myself a little. Personally I liked it, especially that it was a diesel. Downsides? Lots....SLOW I doubt his could make 55. Build quality was a little rough, lots of rough welds and poorly aligned parts. The heater never did really work and he had a heater unit of his own sitting on the pass side floor that was plumbed into the coolant lines. They cut it up for scrap a few years ago. looking back I wish I had brought it to the States as an antique and restored it.

    I believe you but let's not forget that this is a 1972 model. It's only fair to compare them with cars from the same period. Every day I pass by 2 Golf Mk2 that are a decade younger than the Aro. And to say they did not age well it's an understatement. They are just a pile of rust.

    Renault 12 was a large family car designed for the French middle class and built in Romania as Dacia 1300. Skoda was a luxury brand before WWII but not after. Not at all! They became cheap and brutally ugly communist cars built for people who had no other choice. In my country they were brought by people who could not afford a Dacia. I totally love today's german Skoda's, but without VW they would have followed the fate of the Tatra cars.

    I had a Lara and it went like a rocket and never used a drop of oil. The problem was the vacuum operated wipers that went slower the faster you were going. Great video

    In my country (Macedonia) during Communism, the Volga was the car of for the important people. For the regular people the Zastava 750, Zastava 101 and Zastava Koral (Yugo) were the most popular. FIAT 126P was also common. If you had a bit more money to spend you could had Zastava 1300 (FIAT 1300) if you could afford to run it. There were also Trabants, Wartburgs, Lada, Skoda. My late great grandfather used to own Skoda 1000 MB.

    Not talking that much about the Dacia 1300 ? that car made History , lol, i loved that car , and Dacia 1310 ! They were everywhere , especially in Romania ( of course ) .

    9:19 Nope, 'they' didn't use cast iron to keep the rear end stable. The KGB had some heavy (radio) equipment in the back iirc, but after the cars were sold to ordinary citizens, they obviously removed that equipment. And people just filled that empty spot with a weight. --- By the way the GAZ 12 13, 20, 21, and zil cars are also worth mentioning... Although they were not a 'popular' car.

    @@rdallas81 Well I said they put useful weight in the back. I.e. there is a difference between putting weight in the back to fix a bad suspention design, and adapting the suspention to match the weight that's been planned.

    Cool vid, interesting info! I really didn't know about some of those vehicle's existence. OK, I was aware of the Trabant badge/name & how truly sad they were, but the fact that there were even SADDER examples of "communist cars" that were produced had me taken aback. Cut 'n' glue is one thing, rusting on the assembly line would seem to be worse in my book. The Fiat, I know, is actually what eventually became the Yugo here in the States. My fav joke on them was, "Why did they put a rear window defroster on the Yugo? . . . To keep your hands warm when you had push it during Winter!" I DO remember one of the Yugo print ads published in car mags touting something to the effect that they "made sure to ship over plenty of spare/repair parts BEFORE delivering any assembled units for sale". This, so they wouldn't have to wait for parts to be shipped & be prepared for good customer service in the event you needed repairs. Yeeeeeeah. . . right. If there's ANY group of American voters that would have ONLY ONE SINGULAR REASON to resist the DMC in general, but ESPECIALLY their shift to socialism & its INEVITABLE evolution into communism, it would be. . . THE ENTIRE CAR COMMUNITY! Everybody from the cr*p/bullsh*t spewing ricers & posers, to hardcore builders, to design & engineering geeks should realize that this list is EXACTLY what we'll have to choose from if American goes down that route.

    Yugo was made in Serbia as part of Yugoslavia and Yugoslavia was not a part of Soviet block.

    I am not sure if they still have it but there is a fella here in Jackson Michigan that has a Trabant. They would take it to the Downtown cruise nights and people would stop to look at it.

    Wow! I drove one LADA when I was in Slovakia...I had NO IDEA you could hand crank it. The 1000B is so cool. I don't know why....but I love it! I drove a Skoda 120L for 5 years when I was in Bratislava before finally buying an Opel Astra H.

    Oltcit had some issues, but it's also true a lot of owners AND mechanics didn't really know how to keep them in top shape. Plus the usual 80's / early '90 manufacturing budget shortages. Despite that, it's really NOT a bad design, and some series were better than others. The newer design Citroen flat four engine combined with a lighter body would make it somewhat racier than the Dacia at the time.

    In the Soviet Union they weren't seen, but in other Warsaw pact countries, they were more common.

    My dad owned the Fiat 126 "Bambino" (export version as far as I'm aware) in a beautiful sky blue color. Each year we used to travel from where we lived in the south of Poland to the Polish seaside (around 635 km), we had a bit of stuff in the frunk, some lugguage on the roof plus a small trailer, Niewiadow N250 with the majority of our lugguage. There were four of us and our dog in the car. You may believe it or not, this Fiat broke only once en route (minor issue with the brakes, which my dad fixed in no time by himself). Those were the most enjoyable and fun trips one could imagine, we had a lot of space in the back, my dad got a proper Sharp cassette/radio player and we used to listen to our 1980s mixtapes with Robert Palmer, Robbie Nevil or Hall & Oates. I swear no amount of money or no luxury car could ever match that experience...

    Where is AZLK (АЗЛК) aka Moskvich (Москвич или Московец). From where do you come from? Cuz most popular car here in Bulgaria was Lada/Zhiguli and Moskvich. We had Moskvich 408. In winter months just put 2 sandbags in trunk and you have snowmobile :)

    The UK got many of these cars in the 1970's. When I was a child in our first house, our neighbour had a yellow Skoda 110. In our next house from 1977 there was a guy four doors up who had a yellow Moskovitch 412 eastate. On the other side of the cul-de-sac was a man who had a navy blue Wartburg 353. A friend of mine had a blue 1988 FSO 125p. He took me home in it once. It was comfortable to sit in and had a good heater. It met its end when the wind caught a heavy gate and slammed into it while he was driving. He drove it for a little while after, but soon got rid of it. While at Uni, a flatmate of mine had a white Yugo three door hatch. I believe it used to belong to his mum, and it was very well looked after and never broke down. I believe the Moskvitch was an official import for a time, but the FSO and Lada as well as the Yugo were available for many years. I collected brochures, and believe it or not have these three makes represented there. In 1993 the cheapest Lada "Riva" was an inexpensive car in Britain costing about 4,500 pounds. I liked the fact it had a warranty and I'm sure it would have lasted well if looked after properly.
